Muay Jerng forms look very similar to yet another South East Asian martial art: Pencak Silat of neighbouring Malaysia. The Malays of the Kelantan-Southern Thai border call Muay Thai 'Tomoi' & basically this was the place where Silat locks & takedowns married with muay thai strikes & clinch but interestingly? This was at the South of Thailand, Northern Malaysia. The La Na Kingdom of Muay Jerng is North of Thailand, many miles away. And yet, the moves incorporated dance-like forms very similar to Pencak Silat at a glance. Maybe, just maybe Thai martial art evolved into hardcore battlefield arts due to invasion from neighbouring countries like Burma (Myanmar) whilst Silat retained it's aesthetic dance-like qualities from a lack of constant invasion/civil wars. Much like how the La Na kingdom banned combat sports & became closed off. I'm beginning to see that martial arts like Muay Boran or ancient Lethwei were born out of a need to hit the battlefields & their techniques merged to form the standard in terms of killing blows, while less violent arts like Silat or Muay Jerng remained unevolved; pretty much "virgin" so to speak.
Thank god I'm in the right art I started training modern muay thai(Modern and chaiya style) back in 2019, that was my very own resolution that i like to switch it up from my taekwondo to muay thai, i can still used some taekwondo moves, it's kinda same as those muay thai kicks except the jumping side kicks. @@-pao_de_queijo- Modern Muay Boran, better known as Muay Nam (Boxing of Water), is the style of Muay Boran that I founded with the aim of reforming Muay Boran by simplifying it, removing impractical techniques, refining what was useful, adding the great wealth of knowledge of modern fighting, and science. It is not a finished and crystallized style, it's always changing and improving. In Modern Muay Boran the focus is on the purest form of fighting: -Bare-knuckle -9 weapons of the body (Headbutts too) -Stand-Up Wrestling (All takedowns and throws allowed) -No rules -No ground fighting because in ancient times going to the ground meant death. (Only a basic defense system to get up quickly if you fall to the ground). However, many concepts can be effectively used in Muay Thai, Lethwei, MMA, and much more. The difference with Muay Thai is enormous because Muay Thai has many limitations, rules and a points-system (The Burmese Boxing, Lethwei, is closer to Muay Boran than Muay Thai itself so you can imagine the differences) If you check out my website you can find out more about Modern Muay Boran, link is on my channel or in the description. Muay Boran is like a rusty sword due to tradition, wrong training methods, and wrong fighting logic. Most Muay Boran masters today just keep it rusty and add beautiful jewels to sell it. For me it's different, I aim to restore its effectiveness.

Interesting video. Finally I understand that muay boran and muay thai is little bit different, I thought they are same and just different name be different cultures
This is an extract from an article on my blog: "The style of the hero Phraya Pichai Dab Hak, also known as Thongdee Fan Kao. This style was born from the union of Muay Thasao with Chinese martial arts. Many of the features of Muay Thasao are the same for this style as well, it is heavily focused on fast kicks, and it aims to defeat the opponent in the shortest possible time. The stance is almost identical to the Thasao one but the front arm is bent and held near the eyebrow, while the rear arm is held near the chin to protect it and to protect the neck. Practitioners of this style prefer to position themselves externally to the opponent, and not to face him frontally". Another peculiarity of the style is kicking without swinging the arms, check out the article "Muay Boran Styles Overview" on my blog (link in bio and on my youtube channel) to find more information. There at least 2 books published by the Muay Thasao Phraya Pichai headmaster on the style, but they are in Thai language 🙏

So my question about these and let me know if i missed a couple why do they have very similar stances to Muay Chaiya i also always wanted to bring every single style of muay boran and muay thai by that i learn all the moves of each style then bring togather as one which will be very deady and make the stance similar to muay chaiya.
These styles have all been developed in Thailand so it's natural for them to have few common traits. However, that's not the case, if you mix different Muay Boran styles you might end up creating a mess. Muay Boran has a lot of potential hindered by years of wrong training methods and useless techniques, you must be able to discern what works and what not, what is useful and what is useless, what can be refined to be used, and what cannot. It's not an easy task, since almost all Muay Boran masters out there do not face reality and get trapped in tradition or a "fantasy reality of combat". What I'm doing in this channel is reforming Muay Boran under one unique style, which is simple, effective, and efficient, the Modern Muay Boran, better known as Muay Nam. I recommend you to follow my work as a guide for you. You can explore styles by yourself but be careful. The Chaiya stance for example is not the most optimal, it's almost a side stance that exposes the back of the leg and ends up constricting you. The triangular guard shuts down your jab, the most important punch ever. Couple all this with unrealistic and highly complicated blocks and you might now understand what I meant in the last paragraph. The Chaiya stance in their demonstrations seems invincible but that's because: 1) it's a demonstration 2) the are no real feints When chaiya fighters fight for real, as you can see in youtube videos, it's easy to exploit their stance with feints, and the truth about their intangible stance comes out. They take a lot of punishment and even do some beginners errors due to wrong training methods and fighting logic. This does not mean that Muay Chaiya is useless, I myself took a lot of techniques and principles from Muay Chaiya, but as it is now it has a lot of room for improvement, otherwise, it will always reach a limit and other modern styles, even Muay Thai, will overwhelm it.
@@GaawutProductions thanks for this information and i know i have bin asking a lot of questions but its just for me to learn more about muay boran and my final question was gonna be. Is every single moves/techniques the same for every muay boran style but only the stances change up what im trying to say do muay boran fighters learn every technique and moves but have a certain stance so they can use for example a stance meant for mostly defence fist forearm and elbow and the kicks and knees are rarely used. I hope you get what im saying
@@24kRa3d_- Feel free to ask anything, I like answering questions. Every style has different stances, footwork, techniques, mechanics, and strategies, but they might have some in common. Generally, all Muay Boran styles are well-rounded, which means they are capable of using all 8 weapons but usually the focus is on 2. Muay Chaiya is totally different from Muay Korat and they are both totally different from Muay Thasao. It's almost like studying a different martial art.
Pure Muay Thasao I think is extinct, it is even difficult to find footages. To date, the Thasao lineage is handed down by Muay Phraya Phichai, but I heard that they don't teach non-Thai people, maybe it's just a rumor though, I'm not sure.
In Ong Bak Tony Jaa uses a hybrid style with some exaggerated features to make it more spectacular. He already had knowledge of Muay Boran before Ong Bak, but for the movie he was further prepared by Amnat Pookrisuk, an expert on different ancient styles (Muay Korat, Chaiya, Lopburi and others).
Is very nice to preserve the history of Thailand's martial arts but, I prefer muay thai because there's actual fight on it, at least here in Brazil I only see choreography on muay boran classes.
Which style would use elbows the most? I'm looking to research a muay boran style that utilizes the elbows to destroy the limbs or the chest and thigh area. Such as elbowing the forearm, bicep, tricep, chest, collar bone, thigh, knees and even the head. Can anyone help me out?
Using the elbows to attack key points such as the joints, tights, bicep and chest is a strategy common to all styles of Muay Boran, in my style, the Modern Muay Boran, this strategy is call "Hak Peek" which means "to break the wing". There are styles that use the elbows more than others, but basically everyone uses them. Muay Chaiya uses them a lot and mainly use active defenses, like blocking with the elbows (Pid), which in turn damage the opponent's limbs.
4:18 Muay jerng is similar to "silat"...hmm very similar actually...and of course in silat there a lots of style too...I'm gonna go for "gayong pusaka" created by Datuk Meor Abdul Rahman"
5:26 Chaiyut. Where can I find these old videos?? I watched them about 10 years ago here on RUclips and can’t find them anymore. Can you please help me find these Chaiyut videos? 🙏
I would recommend my style, the Modern Muay Boran, for more info check out my video "What is Modern Muay Boran?", You'll understand why I recommend my style. If you exclude mine I would say that Korat, Lopburi, Chaiya, and Thasao Phraya Pichai Daab Hak are the most practical, but they have their flaws, I recommend you again to see the video on my style for more information. Remember that styles do not fight, it is the practitioner who makes the style effective (of course, you have to at least make sure you don't have a style that is good for theatrical performances, and not for fighting, like Aikido). Everything must be accompanied by the right methods of technical training, strength and conditioning, and nutrition. It takes a lot of time and resources, personally, I don't believe in self-defense, there are people who know how to fight and people who don't, that's it.
Forms are not beneficial to Muay in my opinion, it's better to learn the techniques by exercising with a cooperative partner that gives you sense of distance, timing and weight distribution. Then once you have learned the correct form, practice them in shadowboxing and sparring. Karate's Kata have sequences that simulate real combinations, while Muay's forms are just a compendium of techniques without a practical progression. I've translated the oldest Muay book and there are some great drills to do with a partner, I recommend it 🙏
Traditional styles are recorded in Thai history, the Pahuyut "master" is distorting Thai history with false stories and events to support his "martial art", and they are defaming the masters of the main styles and the styles themselves (without having ever studied them) which are recognized by the Thai people and historical sources. One example is the famous master of Muay Chaiya, Khet Sryiyapai, who is the grandson of the Lord of Chaiya who had assignments related to the King and the Thai Army (everything is documented); there is no more qualified person to learn muay Chaiya from, yet the master of Pahuyut tries to discredit him. The creepy thing about Pahuyut is not so much the fact that they spread a fake ineffective martial art, that they defame historically famous Thai Masters, that it is an actual cult, but more the fact that they spread false knowledge about Thai history that deceive those who have never known it, creating confusion about the true history and traditions of a country, all this just for money. Furthermore, it is enough to see their training and their techniques to realize that there is no real martial foundation behind the "art". They will not survive 5 seconds in a ring against an average Muay Thai practitioner, even if he is a beginner.
@@GaawutProductions it is a pity,i often found people under Muay Boran video discrediting the lineages, and often under Pahuyut videos. I watched them and it seemed interesting ,so i was genuinely interested,i wanted to buy the Pahuyut compedium, even though i was somewhat suspicious of the claim that Pahuyut was the true art from which the others originate from, but at the same time their system seemed complete and insightful. I at least hope that the elements were true,if the methodology is not.
@@junichiroyamashita Pahuyut is not Muay Boran, I do not advise to buy or even listen to their claims or their techniques. Both the elements and methods are wrong. The people discrediting the main styles are people from Pahuyut, they personally started that defaming campaign under every Muay Boran video on youtube, every comment is the same, they copy and paste it. They try to defame the others to rise, but their enemy is Thai history itself, they will never succeed. Don't be scammed.
@@junichiroyamashita Well that's not true, You can see a video on their channel that shows the Pahuyut master struggling in a friendly demonstration in a European Sword Gathering. What he practices didn't work, not even in slow motion, and it didn't fooled an actual sword expert. The European sword practitioner noticed it very soon and didn't take the Pahuyut master very seriously. I have very basic knowledge of armed combat, but it doesn't take long to realize that what they do can't work, it's unrealistic and you'd be killed just trying in a real sword fight. In any case, the effectiveness in combat is not decided by speaking but by demonstrating with actions in fights and sparring, and they never did and never will, because exposing themselves would ruin their business because everyone would realize the truth.

Chaiya was a town bordering Burma. as far as i know the style originated there and has lethal techniques. art of war to fight the Burmese. correct me if i am wrong. thank you.
Not exactly. Chaiya is located in Surat Thani, South Thailand, on the totally opposite side to where Burma was located (Near North Thailand). Muay Chaiya wasn't born there though, it was brought to Chaiya by a monk (supposedly an ex-soldier or ex-boxer) from Bangkok. The monk was called Than Ma Phantom (Ajarn Ma), It is said that he helped to tame a wild elephant that was damaging farms in the area, and a temple was built to celebrate his success, the "Wat Thung Chap Chang" (The Temple of the Elephant Captured in the Field). It was in this temple that he taught the martial arts that he knew to the locals of the city. One of the students was Phraya Wacheesatyarak (Kham Sriyabhai), the governor of Chaiya at that time, and since then, the branch of Muay Thai taught by this monk came to be known as Muay Chaiya. But yes, it is one of the styles that have preserved lethal techniques, such as bone-breaking, and neck-breaking techniques.
@@GaawutProductions thanks for your reply. well, they fought the Burmese even on Phuket (3 women with swords monument). i think at times the Burmese border was pretty far in the south. i will check up on this one. thanks again !
@@olafkliemt1145 I'm not an expert in Thai history but I'm not aware of an extension of the Burmese border as far as in Chaiya. Chumpon and Chaiya were attacked by the Burmese, Thalang (Early Pukhet) was attacked mainly by the sea with their fleets, as most of the forces of Thailand were concentrated in the North. This however is not correlated with Muay Chaiya, it was never thought specifically to fight the Burmese, and we don't know for sure where Ajarn Ma learned the Art. Since Muay Chaiya also has weapon fighting, it is clear that it was aimed at fighting in wars, but not specifically for the Burmese-Siamese wars.
Yeah, I know, personally, I look for my material in Thai, and I always try to get as close as possible to the original source. I surf the internet and check the sources, I don't have any in particular.
Yes Thaiyuth is amazing. Thaiachira is a Muay Chaiya school, it is not clear in the video sorry for that Yes, there might be some similarities with wing chung.
I happened to find articles in which the traditional styles were called with the terms: Paak Eesaan (Muay Korat), Paak Tai (Muay Chaiya), Paak Klang (Central styles like Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Lopburi) Paak Nuua (Muay Thasao). But I honestly have no idea where they come from and who uses them. My teachers have never mentioned these terms, and I rarely find them on the web. The World Muay Boran Federation in my experience does not use them, so I can't assure you the truthfulness of the source. It is better to call the styles with today's certain and commonly used terms (Muay Korat, Muay Pranakorn, Muay Lopburi, etc.) by those who work in the sector.
It is difficult to reconstruct the history of Thai martial arts, due to the fire in the capital Ayutthaya which destroyed all the books and documents. What we know of Muay Boran styles dates from around 1750 until 1929. The oldest style seems to be Muay Lopburi, but its origin and history are surrounded by legends.
Many scenes are very realistic, others are not at all. Many aspects of the art are exaggerated but all in all, they made a good compromise between realistic and unrealistic but spectacular. The scenes with bare hands against weapons are too much unrealistic, as in many movies, I can never help but laugh. Ong bak is perhaps the best film ever made on a martial art in my opinion, capable of combining technique, tradition, and the spectacularity of cinema harmoniously. Also, Tony Jaa is a great actor and martial artist, in his prime, he was a fury.
if you respect the video and its massage and if you think you are a fair sportsman who respect others culture and nature and traditions, you will take your comment back. if not....you are a typical internet type of person, exactly one of these the from which Gaawut Productions tried to warn us. because such comments and such visions lead to hate and darkness, exactly how stupid my is the best no no my is the best discussions start... good day sir
Thasao and Phraya Pichai are two branches of boxing from the Uttaradit region, but they have some differences, such as the stance, otherwise, there would be no distinction between the two. According to the legend, Phraya Pichai learned Muay Thasao from Khru Mek and later modified it through the influence of Chinese martial arts, and thus Muay Phraya Pichai was born. Regarding Thaiachira it is true, only the name of the school changes, which teaches both Krabi Krabong and Muay Chaiya. Thaiyuth has been inspired by Chaiyut and both have received the influence of various Thai styles other than Thasao and Phraya Pichai, like Muay Chaiya for example, plus their philosophy, forms, and way of teaching are different, they are not the same as Muay Thasao. Check out the Thaiyuth official blog for plenty of official information.
@@GaawutProductions Yet the same people are involved under those names. Thasao is basicaly extinct, and the only people left preserving it are from Phraya Pichai linage. They created Thaiyuth (in 80s, I believe) to promote the heritage to wide public. And Chaiyuth so far materialised only as a DVD title, in which things shown are rare and pulled from various sources, but true applications are lost, it's more theoretical and for demonstration purposes. I believe I'have stumbled upon their blog, but didn't study it cause right from the start I've found inaccuracies. Like the claim that "tum tab jab hak" set of techniques comes frome chinese MA (although it may have been GoogleTranslate issue as I don't read thai).
@@kaliyuddha Regarding the origin of Thaiyuth, the official blog says: "Chakraphop Charoenrat (The master we can see in the Chaiyut DVDs) aimed to make Thaiyuth a tool for youth development, to develop the physical, intellectual and moral aspects. Chakraphob Charoenrat has initiated this martial art under the name "Thaiyuth" due to being inspired by Chaiyut, a martial art born during the reign of King Naresuan the Great. Chakraphop Charoenrat has developed the martial art Thaiyuth with a combination of international martial arts and martial arts that are national sports of other nations, to be applied together with Thai martial arts including Muay Thai and Krabi Krabong, to be consistent and suitable with the reality of this era. Chakraphop has learned Thai martial arts from: -Mr. Boonpluang Charoenrat (His Father) -Ajarn Huol Heng Poomdeed, Muay Thai teacher and Dab teacher. - Ajarn Khet, Muay Chaiya teacher in the south - Ajarn Poon Phra Kharachai, a boxing teacher of the North - Phra Ajahn Suea Ratchaburi -Sword Saber from Sritrairat Sword School." @@-pao_de_queijo- Modern Muay Boran, better known as Muay Nam (Boxing of Water), is the style of Muay Boran that I founded with the aim of reforming Muay Boran by simplifying it, removing impractical techniques, refining what was useful, adding the great wealth of knowledge of modern fighting, and science.
It is not a finished and crystallized style, it's always changing and improving.
In Modern Muay Boran the focus is on the purest form of fighting:
-Bare-knuckle
-9 weapons of the body
(Headbutts too)
-Stand-Up Wrestling
(All takedowns and throws allowed)
-No rules
-No ground fighting because in ancient times going to the ground meant death.
(Only a basic defense system to get up quickly if you fall to the ground).
However, many concepts can be effectively used in Muay Thai, Lethwei, MMA, and much more.
The difference with Muay Thai is enormous because Muay Thai has many limitations, rules and a points-system
(The Burmese Boxing, Lethwei, is closer to Muay Boran than Muay Thai itself so you can imagine the differences)
If you check out my website you can find out more about Modern Muay Boran, link is on my channel or in the description.
Muay Boran is like a rusty sword due to tradition, wrong training methods, and wrong fighting logic.
Most Muay Boran masters today just keep it rusty and add beautiful jewels to sell it.
For me it's different, I aim to restore its effectiveness.

3:33 Could you give us more information 'Muay Phraya Pichai Dab Hak'. I am really interested in learning the style.
This is an extract from an article on my blog:
"The style of the hero Phraya Pichai Dab Hak, also known as Thongdee Fan Kao.

Muay Pranakorn, And Muay Luang, Muay Thaiyuth, Muay Chaiyut, Muay Thaiachira, Muay Kotchasan.
The Chaiya stance in their demonstrations seems invincible but that's because:
1) it's a demonstration
2) the are no real feints
When chaiya fighters fight for real, as you can see in youtube videos, it's easy to exploit their stance with feints, and the truth about their intangible stance comes out.

Muay boran is too dangerious, we use them in war for killing. The modern muay Thai is nothing campare to muay boran!!
So what would be the style of "Muay" used by Tony Jaa in the movie Ong Bak?

What is the name of Ong Bak's (Tony Jaa) style?
It is a mixed style with some exaggerated features to make it more spectacular, It doesn't have a proper name.

How do I train the forms like karate does with Kata to Bunkai then to kumite
I'm just now learning Muay thai
Forms are not beneficial to Muay in my opinion, it's better to learn the techniques by exercising with a cooperative partner that gives you sense of distance, timing and weight distribution. Then once you have learned the correct form, practice them in shadowboxing and sparring.
Karate's Kata have sequences that simulate real combinations, while Muay's forms are just a compendium of techniques without a practical progression.
I've translated the oldest Muay book and there are some great drills to do with a partner, I recommend it 🙏
Mmh,i was going to ask about Pahuyut ,until i saw it . One says that the other is fake, what is the truth?
@@GaawutProductions oh well,at least the sword the use is very nice.

The monk was called Than Ma Phantom (Ajarn Ma),
It is said that he helped to tame a wild elephant that was damaging farms in the area, and a temple was built to celebrate his success, the "Wat Thung Chap Chang" (The Temple of the Elephant Captured in the Field).

Many scenes are very realistic, others are not at all. Many aspects of the art are exaggerated but all in all, they made a good compromise between realistic and unrealistic but spectacular. The scenes with bare hands against weapons are too much unrealistic, as in many movies, I can never help but laugh. Thasao, phraya pichai, chaiyuth and thaiyuth are one and the same thing.
Thaiachira and chaisawat are just school names, not different styles.
@@kaliyuddha Regarding the origin of Thaiyuth, the official blog says:
"Chakraphop Charoenrat (The master we can see in the Chaiyut DVDs) aimed to make Thaiyuth a tool for youth development, to develop the physical, intellectual and moral aspects.
Chakraphop has learned Thai martial arts from:
-Mr. Boonpluang Charoenrat (His Father)
-Ajarn Huol Heng Poomdeed, Muay Thai teacher and Dab teacher.
- Ajarn Khet, Muay Chaiya teacher in the south
- Ajarn Poon Phra Kharachai, a boxing teacher of the North
- Phra Ajahn Suea Ratchaburi
