- In the Czech Benoni, also known as the Hromadka Benoni, after Karel Hromádka, Black plays 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 e5. The Czech Benoni is more solid than the Modern Benoni, but also more passive.

I am from NYC and run into Asa Hoffman sometimes. He recently turned 80, is still active in chess and can hold his own especially in blitz. He has a unique background with lots of interesting stories. A lecture topic perhaps?

I understand the mentality behind this opening a bit better now. It's a bit like the various hedgehog formations where black stays on the first three ranks and sets up various breaks, while white tries to dominate the board and restrict black's movement. The difference is that in the hedgehog the center is fluid as opposed to closed, so there are more tactical opportunities. When I play the hedgehog with either color I always run into tactical trouble where the rubber meets the road.
I might like the Czech Benoni. Been looking for something to replace my Nimzo-QID repertoire because I've gotten dissatisfied with the QID part. I'd been trying the modern Benoni but the road is too well-trodden.
Agree. Christof Selecki also has a good book on these setups in the Nimzo.

Played someone at my local chess club this morning who hit me with this opening. After the game, where I obviously had no idea what to do as white, he said Ben finegold made a video. Now I have to study so he doesn't hit me with it again. Thanks Ben.

Got into a similar position with black a week ago and didn't know any theory. I ended up getting crushed. This lecture will surely help with that.
Probably still will get crushed but that's because I blunder...maybe I should stop blubdering and then become a good player.

Yes, Anand is pronounced "Anond". Similarly, benoni is pronounced "bonunu"
I actually heard of Asa Hoffman because he was in a movie called Searching for Bobby Fischer. I don't remember if they found him.
