My biggest observation here is of Jan, the seller. I love how his demeanor changes. It's gradual and like a flash all at once. I get the feeling his harsh demeanor in the beginning was more of rehearsed persona. Like he's gotta come in tough because he doesn't know what kind of people he'll encounter when the door opens. Yet, his comfort level raised and his wall began to come down almost immediately upon being in the room with musical instruments. I love that singular line that he wanted to be a musician and his parents didn't want that. It sets up an understanding for the rest of the film. It offers a clear motive and understanding of reactions to follow. I think when he watched Oli's, the violinist, face as he played, that Jan was drawn in because he has a similar reaction to music that has had to be suppressed. So, as he felt a connection to the music, he felt a connection to the musician. It makes so much sense. And then his demeanor softens even more as it cascades into intimacy. Then of course, the phone rings, his life calls and his demeanor goes back to this tough, distant guy. So, in this story, Jan is my favorite of the two characters, because he goes through such a gradual circle of emotions. And because the writing allowed the character's actions to make sense. And the actor was very good. He executed the transformations perfectly, seamlessly, and believably. This was a very good short film and I enjoyed it.

+shawn8093 Wow! Thank you for the compliment. I'm overwhelmed. To answer your question, I do think Jan is gay. I do think the passion of Oli, the violinist, is stirred something in him. However, he seemed very comfortable in the situation and showed no confusion or hesitation. I think Jan is gay, knows it, and has had experiences with other guys. I do also think, though, like I said, that his tough guy edge is part of his persona. There's something much more tender in him that came out very easily. However, I do think Oli might have been a little awkward about his orientation. He didn't seem completely comfortable. But, I think he's probably a little uncomfortable with himself as being different in a lot of ways. It was implied that he's left alone a lot, I got the impression his parents aren't very involved with him. As a violinist, he may be singled out by the typical school clicks. Add to that, there's an aspect of him that makes me believe though he knows he's gay, and accepts himself, he hasn't had a lot of experience with guys. For me, though I really appreciate the stories that highlight the journey of coming to accept oneself as gay, I like stories like this one that are not anchored to that aspect of the characters' lives. And in my opinion, that is why the "oh my gosh I'm gay" factor is not prevalent in this story. Okay, so your turn. Do you think the guy is gay or just connected to the music?

limitattitude That's a good point. I had to go back and watch that moment again. I do think Oli was purchasing "the dope." (Sorry for the quotations, certain things don't flow from me that easily. Lol) Here's why I think that's the case. Oli was ready and asking for the joint; but, as he said it was stronger than he expected. That's why he choked. Plus, when Jan got the phone call, he left right away. In my mind, if the transaction was meant to be about sex, there would have been more of a discussion about him leaving without that happening. And when he was leaving Oli asked how much he was owed and he said nothing because he was taking it with him. Transaction not completed. That's why I believe Jan will be back, because Oli didn't get what he called for. It seemed like a pretty blatant reason for him to come back; so, Jan must have felt a genuine connection to him. That's my thought about it.

At the moment, the music is only available as part of the film itself, but we will consider making it available through other channels and keep everyone posted. We didn't give any of the pieces titles either - maybe this is something we can also bear in mind.

It's just how tender that violin moment was that makes me love this so much. It is such a beautiful scene that is just so heart-wrenching. I've watched that scene over and over and can't get enough. It gives me that feeling of,"Wow. I love this person. This is a person who, I look at, and I want to cry because I don't deserve them. I just want to protect them and love them." Everyone deserves to feel that specific feeling. It feels like you are falling and flying at the same time. That feeling came to me when I saw the dealer look at him when he put his hand gently on his hip. I love this so much. Amazing acting, amazing film. Thank you so much for this!

Amazing film. Only 11 minutes, and yet we feel like this glimpse we get of these 2 boys lives goes straigh to their hearts. Superb acting and photography. Very well done. And are left wishing for more.
I love this movie so much! I have watched it like 100 times since i found it, about one and a half years ago. Personally, I'm not sure this gem should have an extension or needs to be continued - it's just perfect on its own -, but if it will make it to a second part or something, I would be glad.
i cannot say how many times over and over again i have watched this film. bravo to Roman and actors and everyone else on set! stunning cinematography and the story is so simple and clean, yet beautiful all the same. i love the length of it but wish for more :)
Whoever made this vignette struck all the right notes in production and acting values. You know how to allow the actors to show beneath the surface into the endless complexity of emotion and behavior. Thanks for this brief clip.
I think this would be a worthwhile story to expand into a feature length film. Hopefully, one that does not descend into "gay cliches" and one that retains the subtleties that are contained in this short. I wish you the best on your project!
Ok, so here's the thing: we pulled together the music from the film along with some snippets of unreleased stuff that didn't make the final cut. We had it all remastered (sounds great!) by an engineer. We are thinking about making these tracks available online for €0,99 (for all the tracks). Does that sound fair? This would go directly to the composer ;-) Let us know what you think.
At 3:32 Oli puts his wallet down by the violin case. At the end 9:54 his wallet is no longer there. If Jan took it, we never see how he did it. Is this a mistake? If Jan took his wallet, that casts a shadow on everything that happened. Either way, I feel sorry for Oli-this unexpected intimacy interrupted. At the end he has yet to notice that his wallet is gone. I want the story to continue; yet it's painfully perfect as it is.
***** I think you're right on both points. The missing wallet is a continuity error. Instead of someone wearing a blue shirt in one scene & a moment later a green shirt, this error is less noticeable but potentially devastating. If Jan took the wallet, he won't return. Since it's an error, he surely will! I feel frustrated, dismayed & a little sad that they were so abruptly interrupted, but happy that they've found each other!

*Violin (2012) gay-themed short* 4 stars; 12-min. chance encounter unlocks a moment beyond careful facades, but ends just as suddenly, leaving wanting. Excellent production standards, sound; the two actors bring authenticity to their roles.
I watched this for the first time when I was 15. I’m 21 now and still come back and watch this probably at minimum once a year. It’s phenomenal. And that kiss is still one of the sexist things I’ve seen in film.
Cellphones are off the devil. Just imagine what would have happened if that blasted thing just kept its big ass ring to itself, it always deprive people of such valuable and beautiful moments such as these. I hope I can watch a full movie of this it was great, but please just leave the cellphone at home when you visit him again.
Beautifully executed work of art. We all are wondering what might have happened if the cell phone had not interrupted their passion. The story captivates and draws you in to the point where you want to see more. Very well done with lovely music and photography.

It's also a movie about the bridge between rich and poor. The beauty of the violin boy is as good as his music. Life is so good, he's so pretty, in the eyes of the dealer.

Amazing work. It is already 2019, and I’m still coming back to see this! It was a beautifully intimate moment. I’m so disappointed that the (freaking) phone went off, cause you could see that he was going to continue. In the end, this will always be a favorite.

I love this. It's so much more powerful for the fact that almost nothing happens... it draws you in unexpectedly, and it's amazing.
It always amazes me, when people can create such a tension in a scene, where nothing happens

Amazing film. Only 11 minutes, and yet we feel like this glimpse we get of these 2 boys lives goes straigh to their hearts. Superb acting and photography. Very well done. And are left wishing for more.
This needs to be made in to a full film, the premise is beautiful, and the execution during the intimate scene was masterful, I love it so much!
I love this movie so much! I have watched it like 100 times since i found it, about one and a half years ago. Personally, I'm not sure this gem should have an extension or needs to be continued - it's just perfect on its own -, but if it will make it to a second part or something, I would be glad.

i cannot say how many times over and over again i have watched this film. bravo to Roman and actors and everyone else on set! stunning cinematography and the story is so simple and clean, yet beautiful all the same. i love the length of it but wish for more :)

Now, I can't ever imagine this happening in reality, but this was amazing and I love it.
Whoever made this vignette struck all the right notes in production and acting values. You know how to allow the actors to show beneath the surface into the endless complexity of emotion and behavior. Thanks for this brief clip.
I think this would be a worthwhile story to expand into a feature length film. Hopefully, one that does not descend into "gay cliches" and one that retains the subtleties that are contained in this short. I wish you the best on your project!

this is still one of my favourite if not my favourite short film for this genre. It has been for years. It becoming a feature film would be a dream.
At 3:32 Oli puts his wallet down by the violin case. At the end 9:54 his wallet is no longer there. If Jan took it, we never see how he did it. Is this a mistake? If Jan took his wallet, that casts a shadow on everything that happened. Either way, I feel sorry for Oli-this unexpected intimacy interrupted. At the end he has yet to notice that his wallet is gone.
I want the story to continue; yet it's painfully perfect as it is.
***** I think you're right on both points. The missing wallet is a continuity error. Instead of someone wearing a blue shirt in one scene & a moment later a green shirt, this error is less noticeable but potentially devastating. If Jan took the wallet, he won't return. Since it's an error, he surely will! I feel frustrated, dismayed & a little sad that they were so abruptly interrupted, but happy that they've found each other!

4 stars; 12-min. chance encounter unlocks a moment beyond careful facades, but ends just as suddenly, leaving wanting. Excellent production standards, sound; the two actors bring authenticity to their roles.
I watched this for the first time when I was 15. I’m 21 now and still come back and watch this probably at minimum once a year. It’s phenomenal. And that kiss is still one of the sexist things I’ve seen in film.

Beautifully executed work of art. We all are wondering what might have happened if the cell phone had not interrupted their passion. The story captivates and draws you in to the point where you want to see more. Very well done with lovely music and photography.
