- Doulas Recommend DENIAL and SLEEP in Early Labor as a way cope with contractions. A great strategy for early labor is denial and sleep. This is only recommended for your first labor and birth. Once you have already labored and given birth this isn't a good strategy. Sleep is so important for labor contractions to be effective. We recommend getting as much sleep as possible in early labor. #BigWheelofBirth

Rest is so important! Did you rest in early labor? Share your story below.
First pregnancy I had such good sleep before real contractions started, so baby generally born easily. Second pregnancy had dramatic conditions in third trimester ( baby and me was generally healthy, healthy pregnancy). Baby born in emergency cesarean section, because I was exhausted as result of heavy travelling instead of having rest in third trimester.
I decided to cope with the end of my pregnancy by just... Ignoring my symptoms until my body doesn't let me anymore. This video was recommended by my bumper group and I love the validation. My first instinct was right, and it makes me feel a tiny bit more capable to handle this massive life change!
Hooray for listening to your instincts! I love it. I am glad that this video helped.I love that someone in your bumper group recommended this video. If you find the channel helpful, please share with your group. My goal is to reach people who can benefit from the information. ❤
As a labor nurse and former Doula, I 1000% agree with this. This strategy will keep you out of the hospital too soon, and save you from being crushed when you’re sent home from triage. First timers, don’t ever compare yourself to anyone, especially those who have had more than one labor.
When I sadly have to send someone home because they are not changing their cervix just yet, I tell them to:
1. sleep
2. eat and drink
3. warm shower or bath
4. Take a walk
REPEAT until coping through contractions has turned a big corner.
YES!! It is so hard for people to be sent home. I love your 4 step process and am in complete agreement. I just made a video about tips for riding in the car in labor because if people are able to stay at home until labor progresses more the car ride can be uncomfortable. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that one ruclips.net/video/isPhccS_CEE/видео.html
Currently going through early labor.. contractions on and off. I’ve been so sleepy trying to time, definitely going to sleep now! Things will progress on their own. *denial mode on* 🥳
You got this!!! 😀😀😀
@@birthtoolbox update: I had my babygirl days after this comment. Prodromal labor definitely sped my active labor up. 💞 Resting was definitely key! Thanks so much.
Love your analogy of a long car ride, perfectly said.
Thank you!!! ❤️❤️
I found this series just in time. I’m 37 weeks and I started having some discomfort last night that was “timetable” and I did just that, Denied and went to sleep. I’ve been up a couple of times and I’ll call my midwife in the morning as it has been tolerable now I’m just crampy, but these videos are a great distraction
Best of luck Deanna!!!
I'm scheduled for induction tomorrow but have had all the signs come this weekend. Spent all night trying to sleep through contraction's 10-20 mins apart. I've only gotten 8 hours sleep in the past 48 cause of symptoms. Wish I'd seen this video earlier because family has already been driving me crazy and I should have kept to myself I'd started early labor because now my contractions slowed down after a nap instead of intensifying and they're all going nutters. Taking all the naps and ignoring my phone until baby is here one way or the other
YES, take all the naps!!! Sending you some positive labor thoughts. You got this!!!
In not sure why you emphasized this to first time moms. Im a third time mom but never labored on my own so this was super helpful for me. Currently denying my early labor signs and resting. Thanks for this info!
Glad it is helpful Grisie! Best of luck on your journey.
Currently in early labor! Def going to do this🙏🏻 my contractions wake me up but I’m gonna sleep in between thank you!☺️
You got this! Rest as much as you can!
Doula in training. This is great advice. Wish I was told this when having my kids. Thank you for the free Childbirth class and these videos. Great information!
You are so welcome
What a great tip!! Thanks Alice
This is actually one of my very favorite tips for first time moms!
great video!
Kaela Raimundo thank you!! Glad you liked it and thank you for letting me know!!
Awesome video. I've been contracting since earlier this week. I thought they were BH but doc confirmed they are contractions. Just resting and denying now!
Best of luck to you!!!
I didn't have time to use this strategy with my first as labour ended up being 3 hours but my poor sister really could have used someone explaining it to her. She had just passed her "due date" when she started to get some niggles and tried to make labour progress rather than let it happen when it would and rest. After a couple of days of early labour, she was exhausted! So yes, denial and sleep!
Yes! So sorry your sister didn’t have this tip in time.
Hi Alice! I appreciate your videos so much! I’m currently working on my doula certification while pregnant (which has slowed down the process a bit). Is the reason you say this technique is only for first time moms because subsequent labors can progress more quickly and/or second/third/etc timers sometimes have a better grasp of when it’s definitely active labor?
Thinking back to my first, I wish I had been able to take a nap during early labor! Great tip!
Absolutely right!
💜💜💜
Currently in early labor, for the last 5 days and honestly this video made me feel so much better about how I'm handling it. I deny deny, sleep. Had my membrane stripped yesterday, so things are a bit rough but honestly I couldn't imagine handling it any other way. 😭
Hang in there!!! Sending you some good labor thoughts.
This is so funny thank you
It's a great strategy!
Thanks for another informative video. My wife and I are planning for a natural birth. Just found out our Doula had to bail on us 20 days before baby is born so I'm trying to learn as much as possible. Your videos have definitely helped
Mike Skidmore I’m so sorry to hear about the doula. Can you get another? Please let me know if I can help with any questions.
@@birthtoolbox thanks Alice. We live in a small town where there aren't many options. We have a question about essential oils. I didn't see a video in regards to them.
What essential oils do you recommend for encouraging stronger surges and when during labour would you typically use them?
I made us a fan and was going to it to fan the scent from a clothe to wifey; one scent periodically between surges and another scent maybe during?
@@Jipoxy I only use essential oils for scent. There aren't any that I use or recommend for increasing surge strength, but lavender is great for relaxing and peppermint can help with nausea.
@@birthtoolbox Hi Alice,
So my wife's blood pressure was getting high 4 days ago so we got sent to the hospital to try to get labour moving gently. The doctors tried cervidil for 3 days in a row and it didn't work. We've been moving around lots in the hospital, trying our darndest to get good oxytocin but contractions just start and fade away. Cervix also was not opening so the Dr wanted to try the Foley Bulb. My wife is starting to get quite discouraged and I'm feeling a bit lost for ideas on what else to try. We both know this part of labour can typically take alot of time but unfortunately we don't have that time.
Any suggestions or tricks you might have? Thank you!
❤
Thanks for watching!
Cramping since 4:30 am over due by threes. Sent hubby to work but on call for me . Normally early labor is 15 hrs plus for me. Trying just to relax and distract.
Sending you good thoughts for a smooth labor and birth, Alyssa!
I have the hardest time sleeping during early labor. But with this being my third I know how important it is to rest! I have always been so sensitive to changes in my body. Even early labor contractions wake me up, sometimes Braxton hicks would. Anything you recommend? I'm pretty sure I'm in early labor now.
A warm bath can slow labor so that you can sleep. Also, it’s still a benefit if you can be restful lying down in bed. Sleep is preferred, but rest is also good!
I had 5 days of prodromal labor/early labor with my first and wore myself out so bad that when I went into active labor I needed a epidural so I could finally rest and my daughter arrive 6 hours later. I want to rest as much as I can this time so that I can avoid epidural if I can.
Rest until you can no longer rest!!
I’m a first timer and am already 35 … my birthday is in September and I’ll be 36 b4 my due date in 2nd week of November this year…. Do you think I can have a normal delivery…. I have a healthy body, no pre existing conditions like diabetes or blood pressure…. Nor am I under or over weight…. I used to smoke till I found out I am pregnant… but quit completely since…
Age 36 for a first baby is more common that you might think! Along with taking care of yourself, I recommend continuing to learn about childbirth through great class. Education can go a long way to help prepare you for the birth ahead.
I’m having early contractions and it’s hard to act like it’s not happening omg these early contractions are hard so I can imagine full labor
Best of luck to you Lekisha!
So what do you suggest for 2nd or more pregnancy? I haven't listened to the whole thing....I just heard the beginning. This is my second pregnancy. With my 1st my water broke and after I got to the hospital contractions started 2-3 hours later. I am assuming my water might not break this thing and the biggest difference is that I will give birth at a birthing center.
Rest for sure, but no denial. Labor can pick up super quickly with a second baby.
@@birthtoolbox my second baby went so overdue they had to induce me, and they couldn’t get my labor going at all. 😢so I’ve had two c sections. If I’m wanting a vbac next time, what should I do? I went 10 days overdue with both babies. First one was 35 hrs of labor, epidural, still no baby. Ended in c section and I was super traumatized. I’d really love to just use this denial method if I ever have another baby.
I tired to sleep through it but that was impossible everytime the contractions came it would wake me right up. The pain was in back , in my butt so basically impossible to try sleep through
It’s great that you tired! Rest as much as you can.
So upset- I’ve been through one induced labor and have no idea what to expect for a spontaneous labor… I’m almost 37 weeks and have been having prodromal labor daily, sometimes multiple times a day. 😭
Prodromal labor is really hard. I’m so sorry.
I have not slept for the past 5 days my contractions are bad and painful and I’m only 1cm dilated😭😭
I’m so sorry Denise. If you still have not rested you could ask you OB/midwife for a sleep aid or other options to help promote sleep.
I think I woke up and started having contractions 30-60 minutes apart. How would this strategy apply after a night of sleep?
I would still be restful until your body won’t let you rest anymore! Excited for you!
Here from homework in childbirth class!
Even though this is my fourth lol. But I am facing induction most likely.... so I still plan on implementing these techniques during that time when the induction is taking off instead of staying up like my first induction with my third! By the time she was born THE NEXT DAY I was EXHAUSTED
Yes, Kayla! During the 2 classes where we cover inductions I will definitely discuss how to use this strategy for that case.
