- Highly respected vocalist Ernestine Anderson renders an engaging woman's version of the Blues Classic, "I Want a Little Girl" in Berlin in 1978.
She was wonderfully supported by a swinging trio, led by the late, legendary bassist Ray Brown, with Mike Renzi on piano and Randy Jones on drums.
At our restaurant we used to play her stuff all the time- people loved her-asked who she was-wondered why not famous. Monty Alexander Ray brown Trio and her recorded a few albums all great. "Live at the Concord jazz festival 1979" is my favorite. Monty Alexander is his best with Ernestine and Ray Brown.
As much as I'd like to believe the pianist was Mike Renzi, whom I'm related to, it was indeed Alexander. Ironically, I never did see Mike in concert since I moved from Rhode Island to San Diego, then Las Vegas. But I did see Monty at the Blue Note in Las Vegas. And it wasn't very long before the club was closed. Sin city doesn't do that sort of thing very well. They would rather book Carrot Top then a jazz playing Monty or Mike. Sad, but true.
Ernestine Anderson was truly dear to my heart, she was chief among my Earth Mother's, she introduced me to Buddhism in Los Angeles in 1970, although it would be ten years later in London, England before I embraced it. I lost touch with her when I converted back to Christianity, but I never stopped loving her, I love her still. Frank Dodson.
I have been a friend of Mike Renzi for 30 years and he affirms that he played this gig with Ernestine Anderson. The bass player was the famous Ray Brown. It's a great performance!!!
Bluesy, jazzy and supremely passionate and deeply soulful, Ernestine Anderson deserves a Lifetime Achievement "Grammy Award" for her decades of sublime recordings and incredibly great performances...for sure one of the all time greatest~ Bravo Ernestine!!!
She sings great and what a fab pianist.
Astonding!!! she truly is one "the greats" thanx...
Truly one of the 'greats' I do adore Ms. Anderson. THANX...
RIP, Ernestine. Thanks for all of the great music over the years.
Monty sets out on a course to absolutely RIP!!! but reigns it in. So good. And I love Ernestine. Thanks for posting.
saw her live in newyork..i didn't know she was ever this young, but hey that voice didn't change!!!
Now that we have a little Ernestine Anderson, how about the awesome Dakota Staton to really blow everyones minds. She is up there with Ella and Sarah. Some of her songs are to die for! Even I've got it bad and that ain't good with Ivie Anderson and Duke Ellington would be fantastic.
Love Ernestine Anderson! and wow...she looks like Randy Crawford--or at least here. Thanks!
Great sounding ensemble, oh yes.
I Love this Lady, she can sing anything.
I love it. Ernestine sounds great as ever and Renzi's piano riffs are so tasteful.
go mike renzi you are the best you blend so well with others it is so mike renzi i know him personally and that is him so smarten up folks
Great legendary singer who is up with Ella, etc and incredible to experience in concert as this great clip shows...check out Ernestine's great Concord Records work as it is peerless...newest Love Makes The Changes is classic Ernestine and her Hollywood Bowl appearance several years ago drew standing ovations! Thanks for this great clip and more please! Bravo Ernestine
I Love Ernestine Anderson
No question about it, the pianist is Monte!
Great Moments With Ernestine Anderson is an amazing album of hers. She's like butter on toast! Love her!
go mike renzi you are the best
Huh? I just happened to be playing a 45 by her this morning. I have no idea who she is, but I do realize that I have heard of her. I have no idea where I got the 45, but I am glad to see this clip. Now I have to find some more stuff of hers to listen to.
I used to have this Cassette . I was Monty's and Ernestines No. 1 fan!
Wow you guys are some real pianist experts!...I thought it was Mike Renzi for a moment myself...and I'm Jamaican and have always paid close attention to Mr Alexander's career!
With piano, there is a slight look-a-like
with Mike Renzi and Monty Alexander. But due Alexander's piano style and the fact he's played with Ray Brown and Ernestine several X's before, I say Monty Alexander.
Thanks for the post.
I am a major fan of Monty. I was fooled for a few moments that this is Monty, but further study convinces me that Stan Gilmer's comments are reliable. Why are so many commentators calling JazzVocalFan a liar? He would not just fabricate the credits when he posted.
go mike renzi you are the best you blend so well with others
I believe that is Mike Renzi on piano. Check the video description above. You can also do an image search on Google and compare photos of Renzi with Alexander.
Rest in peace! ♥
Peaceful Journey into the Afterlife my Garfield High School Alumni!!!
Pointless comparison with Dakota Staton. There is only one Ernestine, and her powerful, clean voice and wonderful interpretations are unrivaled. Our deepest gratitude to Ray Brown for reviving her career when no one else was noticing her!
I feel somehow sorry to have first heard this song interpreted by Loui Armstrong. No one else seems to actually grasp the meaning of the lyrics so perfectly as the King did. Amen.
Sorry this is Monty Alexander at the piano i have 30 min. part of this concert on video.
AS the person who posted this clip and has seen both Mike & Monty several times, I'm sure it's Mike Renzi
Love it!......the Mike Renzi/Monty Alexander argument has been going on for over 2 years now.
Has anyone thought to contact Ms Anderson and ask?
Regardless, the posts keep this awesome performance alive :)
I am surprised that a dispute over who's the pianist is still going on..........
Anyone with half a ear can tell it's Monty Alexander, who's done several albums with Ernestine and was a part of Ray Brown Trio for many years. Mike Renzi is a fine player but he can never groove like Monty, end of story!!
I'm with you. Just look at the hands. Alexander has short stubby fingers. I have the DVD of Alexander's Paris concert and the differnece in hands is really noticible.
Yep, Monty.
It's Monty!!
Its Mike Renzi. I know because I worked with him. Don't let the beard fool ya.
Giant player in his own right...Stan Gilmer.
With all due respect to experts and reliable sourses(beard or not)it´s undoubtedly Monty Alexander and not Renzi.I know both of them well. Also IMO it´s Kenny Clare on drums.Great clip BTW,THANKS!
Monty Alexander, Ray Brown, Louie Bellson Trio?
Pause it at 3'20" - definitely Kenny Clare on drums...
The drummer is Kenny Clare not Randy Jones or Louie Bellson
that is not mike renzi that is monty alexander
Monty Alexander!!!!
i know mike personally what a guy
The Pianist is NOT Mike Renzi. The Pianist is MONTY ALEXANDER!!!
Monty Alexander,piano.
Renzi looks and sounds a bit like Monty Alexander here. He chose to go the route of the accompanist (I wish Frank had done an album with him). But he's the master of the keys at anything he wants to do.
Funny. I also though it was Monty Alexander. I don't know Mike Renzi though so...
of course Monty Alexander recognise the style!!!!!!
