This illustrates the dilemma Jazz singers have. They sing lyrics, not play horns. There's a balance to be struck. To what extent can they ignore the melody and lyrics and improvise at will without sacrificing what the song is trying to convey? There's some fine jazz here, but as a song much of the meaning is sacrificed as far as I can see. For me. Ella gets it right. She can play around the melody a wee bit, but she clearly delivers the lyrics and their full meaning. I enjoyed this, but it's Ella I'll go back to.
