    Hey man, appreciate the video. I like what you said, and since you invited it, I'll go ahead and speak as a person who reads Steam reviews. Since I also write a lot of them, I feel like it only makes sense for me to defend them a bit.
    For a start, while bad Steam reviews can really hurt a game, good Steam reviews can launch it into new levels of success. So it has pros and cons in that respect. Steam reviews can also serve as a bit of a taste test, giving you a sense of how people are feeling about the game before you commit to it yourself. I recommend actually reading negative reviews, of course, since a lot of times people make hyper specific complaints, usually about performance, which will be resolved later and are not reflective of the game's actual quality. This might be what you were referring to with Crimson Tactics.
    As for Tactics Ogre, I completely understand the negative reviews you highlighted, and as a person who never played the original and only started with this remake, I have to confess that I wasn't impressed. I've played similar tactical RPGs, and Tactics Ogre Reborn was near the bottom of my list of them. So for me, the current Steam reviews are totally reflective of my experience, not because I'm an "old head", but because I played the game myself and didn't like it.
    Like you, I advocate for greater nuance and thoughtfulness in examining reviews. Actually read the points and see if they resonate with you. But in that respect, I do genuinely think that Steam reviews can be a useful tool for informing one's own opinion. Not the end-all be-all, but useful.
    However, my true preference is for games to have demos! More demos, people! Then everyone can just try the game out for themselves to see if they like it!
    Anyway, thanks for the video, and have a great one.

      I think most of the haters just hate how you can't power level any more. I think it's brilliant, over leveling is what kills most Trpgs. I like that in Reborn, I have to build teams that synergize well with each other like a NFL football team, rather than the usual Trpg Fire Emblem tactic of over leveling 1 or 3 characters who steam roll the entire game.

    I'm not a fan of RNG mechanics so the cards were hit and miss. Hit being they were out of the way and miss being, they spawned in front of the enemy. Then I realised warriors with breach and archers are overpowered so cards never mattered.

    I do have some complaints about the game, like I do wish there was a bit more customisation options withing the same class as they do end up feeling very same, and I'm still mad about the exclusion of the rogue class... but overall I'd say TO is still one of the best SRPGs ever made.

    I read them to know if there's any game breaking bugs. With the cost of some games being over 70 dollars, you have to be cautious.
    I left a one star review for Pathfinder Kingmaker on XBox. Not because I hated the game, loved it on PC. But because the port was broken and Owlcat lost the rights to the port, meaning the port will never be patched. That's why I keep checking reviews.
    Let's plays are also a new and useful why to decide on a game. The two combined help people be informed on a possible large investment of time and money.

    I just started playing Tactics Ogre last weekend. I loved the idea of putting level caps that adjust as you see more of the story. It's the game telling you that you are ready for what's to come. You just need to use appropriate tactics. One thing I hated with FF Tactics is that I never knew when I was ready for the story battles. I tried grinding and gaining as much EXP and JP. But every time I get slapped down by the next big encounter.

    • @Bogeynator
      @Bogeynator 8 месяцев назад +7

      @@TitaniumLegman "It's their first title" isn't a good excuse. Game development isn't a charity. $30 is $30, and if someone spends $30 on a product they no longer feel is worth $30, they should absolutely speak up about it. Besides, looking up the situation myself, the idea of requiring sequels wasn't even the plan to begin with. It released for $30 in early access with the plan of being fully finished later, but the creators changed their mind and decided that, actually, it WAS complete and the rest of the story should be told in sequels. A lot of people spent $30 under the impression that they were getting the entire thing, which they now aren't. It's another Early Access game that took people's money and then never delivered on the things it promised, and games like that tend to rightfully end up with a lot of negative reviews.

    • @TitaniumLegman
      @TitaniumLegman  8 месяцев назад

      @@Bogeynator Literally none of this is correct beyond the fact that their dev pipeline changed. I'm not sorry to say I defined indie devs, especially ones tackling their first projects, and that won't change. The fact remains that CT has a ton going for it, but people refuse to see past the devs plans having to change. If they had never stated any goals, and put the product out as is after those plans changed, it wouldn't be an issue for any of you. Things get cut and changed during dev cycles all the time, just the way it is.

    • @Bogeynator
      @Bogeynator 8 месяцев назад +3

      @@TitaniumLegman Most of my library is indie games as well, but indie games are still games, and games cost money. There are expectations they have to meet, and if they don't meet them, that can be reason enough for a negative review. I'm not saying it's a bad game. I haven't played it. It's probably fine. But the bottom line is that people paid for one thing and got a different, inferior thing instead.
      If they never stated any goals and put the product out as it is after those plans changed, then yes, it wouldn't be an issue for a lot of people. In that case, people would have known exactly what they were buying before they bought it. For a lot of people, though, that wasn't the case, and they're understandably upset about it.

      @TheBayzent 8 месяцев назад +4

      @TitaniumLegman You are free not to buy those arguments the same way the people who left negative Steam reviews are free not to buy the lack of polish.
      If they release an unpolished product they should charge accordingly, which is definitely not 40 bucks for a 20 year old game, although in this particular case I have no complaints because I didn't buy it full price.

      Absolutely. Just because someone says something a stream review (even if it's their opinion on why they do or don't like the game, which is a fair and valid thing to say) doesn't mean it's a good REVIEW or is indicative of the game's quality. Yet so many people treat Steam reviews like like the God Emperor of Holy Terra himself descended from his Golden Throne to pass them on to the unwashed masses for our elucidation. It's obnoxious.

    Hey Titanium! Thanks for posting this video.
    To be honest - I loved TacticsOgre Reborn - was playing along with your playthrough when you picked the game up, really enjoying it. Then the final boss completely killed my experience so much so that I swore it off as bad. The frustration was so intense, I must have tried at least 100 times to beat that darn fight. I've only recently picked it back up by starting a new game entirely.
    Then - I saw Crimson Tactics on Steam because it's on sale and nearly picked it up until I saw the Mixed reviews. For me, I've used Steam reviews as a way to learn about bugs or things that don't work as you'd expect them to (game or experience breaking things). The ratio isn't as important to me as the comments themselves, if that makes sense. I think that I will check out your Crimson Tactics series on your channel and see if I want to pick it up after what you said about it here in this video!
    Cheers

    That's really shocking to see TOR's recent reviews at Mixed, but then looking at the number next to it, it seems like it's just an extremely small amount of people with different personal opinions. If they feel like the gameplay has changed too much on a fundamental level that it's soured their experience compared to the original, that's valid. Some people still hate the smoothed out look of the sprites and I think that's fine to feel that way too. Of course that's going to affect how Steam's algorithm presents the overall "score" but in a few months the recent reviews will probably have those phased out and go back to normal.
    I think the biggest advantage of Steam reviews is that it's public. It's unfiltered reviews from the customers with a number right next to it of how many hours they have played the game for. It's not professional dishonest reviews from a publication that might have some big conglomerate backing it. People are allowed to say exactly how they feel where professional reviews wouldn't. But that's also kind of the downside, is that people can say ANYTHING no matter how fair or unfair it might seem to the creators.
    Really you just have to trust your own judgement and maybe do some research and what those reviews are actually saying, like in this video here. A lot of people see "Mostly Negative" on the Steam page or a social media post and assume there's some kind of problem with the game, but the only way to find out is to actually see for yourself. There will always be the question of reviewing the game as a piece of art vs reviewing it as a product, where the game itself might be fine but there are still some poor business practices behind it. You could have the best shooter in the world but with the most greedy microtransactions known to man. It's the same as Metacritic scores, an average number doesn't say nearly enough.

    • @TitaniumLegman
      @TitaniumLegman  8 месяцев назад +1

      My biggest issue with TOR is that even the overall reviews are only 74% positive. To me, not liking a changed mechanic is not a valid reason to pan the entire product. Especially when TOR does everything it set out to, and more.

    • @CrimsonPhoenixBen

      @@TitaniumLegman I think where their line of thinking comes from is that the original still exists. So in their eyes they'd recommend that title instead purely based on preferring that style of gameplay. Not that I necessarily agree, just playing devil's advocate. I know I've felt about that with games before though. Off the top of my head the remake of Demon's Souls, while having several gameplay improvements, is a far inferior product overall in my view. Not that I think the game is bad, but I'd also recommend not to play it and to just pick up the original. TOR still offers plenty with its fully voice acted story and other gameplay tweaks, it really is like the definitive version of the game, so I see where you're coming from.

    I never blindly trust if im interest in a game and reviews say mixed or worst I would read it why and then decide what to do. But I think yes devs decision should affect steam reviews like removing content,broken promises,tecnical problems that were never fixed,new monetization methods(even more when they just changed their mind after the release of a paid product) and etc.
    Remasters/Remakes I dont mind people talking the changes they dont like either they brought the product because they like the original so they should give their opinions as well but in the end I like the steam reviews/costumer reviews there is a reason why I dont use Epic Game Store and I have mix feelings with game journalists reviews.

    @ChilledSky_ 8 месяцев назад +2

    This may sound weird but I believe that when most gamers including myself are satisfied with the product they bought they don't leave a review. So when they see a game get bombed by bad reviews they might think, wow people care that much about the game to even leave a review let alone a bad one. A couple things happen there with this mindset. Most games on steam are reviewed by like 80+% of the haters and like maybe only like 10-20% of the people who liked the game and or are satisfied. This skew makes some games, especially remakes not accurate with the steam reviews. The second thing that happens here, and I'll admit I've had this experience is the laymans gamer leaves the reviewing to the people who really care about the games, like I said the average person doesn't leave a review and they see that if the opinionated hardcore fans are hating on it, it must be for a good reason. I agree with you in the fact that the best way to learn if you'll like the game is to watch some gameplay and commentary on it. I would have never bought a strategy rpg if it wasn't for your channel. Keep up the good work.

    *Spoiler alert*
    I just saved Catiua from Lancelot in Chapter 4, but I find it odd that some people complain about the level cap and the bosses with 4 buff cards.
    I feel like people forget how the player has such an unfair advantage over the enemy in this game.
    The ability to scout, enemy units not reviving, most enemies don't have finishing moves, +1 crafted equipment, having 4 slots for all of the BROKEN items like mending essense and buff/debuff items, and overall weak enemy AI.
    I feel like the game would be way too easy if you were able to level up past the enemy...
    FF Tactics actually had this exact problem, because the enemy levels were fixed during the story battles which made them too easy if you did too many random battles.

I use a combination of meta aggregate scores (esp focusing on reviews that match the overall aggregate score), gameplay videos and a "patient gamer" approach to give time for new releases to work out their kinks etc. Still happy to support indie developers earlier on / in early access but I take responsibility for the presence of flaws that exist that I don't like. Fully appreciate the love and dedication that goes into making these fabulous creations, ESPECIALLY for the independent developers. After doing a lot of video reviews myself and comparing my reviews to 'big outlets', I've stopped trusting most reviews. Many folks will give high marks for games that have some bad bugs and not even mention those bugs (likely to stay on good terms with the publisher who's providing review codes), or provide poor reviews because they aren't good that that kind of game. As you mentioned, many folks like to complain and provide low scores on many games because they just aren't as good at a game as they thought they were without taking advantage of certain mechanics.
    I've been debating on picking this up for Switch. I've played through Ogre Battle, Ogre Battle 64, and Tactics Ogre for GBA. All were great games. I think the review bombing of Crimson Tactics was from a large sub section of KS/EA backers who feel they were ripped off or lied to by the developers. The reason steam reviews are poor can range from real problems to snort-inducing political pettiness between players and devs dragged in from twitter. My favorite games/movies are all 6-7 out of 10 in their reviews so I've never put too much stock in "review numbers" and I instead read the text of the reviews to see what people actually like/take issue with in a game. It's a normal and natural approach to put less weight on the numbers and more weight on the product. In general I look at steam reviews as saying "is this product worth the current asking price"

    As an old head of this game that has 2k hours in Reborn I can tell you that most people who play tactical rpgs....don't actually use tactics lol. This is DAH BEST tactical rpg. (Maybe Unicorn Overlord might change that /shrug). People were mostly just salty about the level cap and not being able to grind out various skill levels (like the psp version) that would make their army into something op. The irony is that Reborn actually cut the fat on a ton of completely redundant content, while giving you even better options for building op units. It's really telling about what kind of community this kind of game tends to really have.

    The problem is more naunce situation where folks don't want to think. And well I'm afraid to say this. That kinda how the cookie crumbles, we live in society where folks feel less inclined to use critical thinking.
    Review were never ment to be the end all be all references. Personally when I see steam. Review, positive or negative i still take the time to look are what people say and take them with some grain of salt. Even more I still step outside of steam review and look up publication and what video review are out on RUclips.
    As a consumer it's kinda your job to verify information. In this age it's becoming more apparent that sources for info is...well not always credible or operated in good faith. Look how rotten tomatoes have disparity between critics and audience review. And that should be no different from games.

    when the bad reviews were flashed on the screen 1:08 they talked about marketing decisions in which the devs decided to release on part of a game and another that stated that they had crashes. these are good reasons for bad reviews and you didn't address these. when you did address bad reviews 2:50 you didn't bother to sort the recent reviews (the ones that were 'mixed') by bad reviews to show those. you read one from the recent reviews (right side of the screen) and one from the slightly older reviews that typically aren't included in the recent reviews. this means that you read one bad review and used that to judge all bad reviews. the algorithm for showing reviews is weighted towards positive reviews so unless you tell Steam to show you the bad reviews you won't get a good look at why people down voted the game.
    i like the genre, don't own these games, and didn't review them so i am pretty neutral to the subject, and yes sometimes games get review bombed (either positively or negatively) but you argued your case poorly and didn't seem to know how to work Steam to dig into why they were rated poorly.
    EDIT:
    I went ahead and took a look at the Steam reviews for Tactics Ogre Reborn, here is the 'most helpful' of the negative reviews:
    "That Steam description is no lie: Tactics Ogre is one of the crown jewels of the tactical role-playing genre. And Reborn does introduce changes that improve upon the PSP release and would push the game towards greatness. Unfortunately, so many other changes of the game mechanics in the name of streamlining and game balance make this a worse experience than the PSP version.
    The Good Parts:
    - Speedup feature is king, as always
    - New crafting is free of all hassles, fast and efficient (game will straight up buy missing materials for you to avoid having to make a checklist, it’s great. This is one of two changes I wanted for a remaster/rerelease.)
    - Voice acting is actually pretty good! The main trio of Denam, Vyce and Catiua are really solid imo. Leave it to Square Enix to upload the worst lines from the game (the infamous Lanselot Tartaros clip) in an attempt to sabotage the game pre-release.
    - Replacing the class-wide level system with a unit-by-unit level system like your average SRPG. The other change I wanted Reborn to have. No more getting a new character only to have to grind him for 20 levels to catch up with the rest of the main party.
    - Being able to see the trajectory of missile spells and arrows automatically sir yes sir oorah
    - Scout feature letting you actually see the battlefield and prepare accordingly is a godsend
    - Mouse and keyboard controls actually work really well what the heck
    The Mixed:
    - The removal of random encounters, which were replaced with training. On one hand, no more random encounters means you don’t have to save and reload when you just wanna head from one place to the next on the map. On the other hand, this means you only have dungeons like the Phorampa Wildwood or the Pirate’s Graveyard to get money (which becomes irrelevant once you get the Baldur’s Blowgun recipe), recruit special races like lizardmen, dragons, etc. or correct your Chaos Frame because of course, which is only unlockable around chapter 2.
    - The Union Level cap, which is how the game caps your party’s max levels according to where you are in the story. Now, there have been complaints about the Union cap, but I don’t think it’s a bad idea in theory. It serves to control the levels and stat bloat of not only your party members, but that of the enemies as well, which prevents you from growing overpowered, and were this the PSP release, it would reinforce the idea that equipment and skills are the difference makers, not simply being 10 levels above the enemy ranks. In practice is where the Union level falls apart. For one, it’s too restrictive: the cap is tied to the plot, but it increases in increments of 2 or 3 for every 4 or 5 battles. This means you’ll quickly hit your cap, waste potential experience and all the while, the enemies KEEP leveling ahead of you. Two, what I said about the Union level being a prime opportunity for skill mixing and customization? Well…
    The Bad:
    - The skill system was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gutted. For one, skill points are gone; skills are merely obtained through leveling, which, again, is capped. Second, all characters are now limited to 4 skill slots (and since you’ll always want your weapon skill equipped to be able to use finishers, this realistically leaves you with 3 skills). Finally, skills do NOT carry over from class to class (with one exception that’s unique to one character). I can’t stress enough how awful this is. Skills like Counterattack, Parry, etc. are either straight up removed or tied to equipment. No mixing and matching skills, no customization, nothing! “Theorycraft your way through endless combinations of classes, equipment, skills and magic” my ass! Speaking of;
    - Magic is ALSO limited to 4 spells per character, probably because Square Enix thought having more spells than you can count on one hand was too confusing for would-be players. Having mages use two elements (like having one guy with Dark spells for ailments and Water for some healing on the side, or giving every member of your team access to Fire spells to blast away at people with the same element) was cool, but there’s no way to do that now since, again, you only have 4 spell slots.
    - The removal of tactical points (TP) is such a questionable decision. In Let Us Cling Together, TPs were a third resource that could be used for skills and for finishing moves; spellcasters traded it for MP in the form of Meditate, and fighters used it for skills like Berserk, Phalanx, Fearful Impact, etc. In Reborn, TP was removed, and instead finishers consume MP (which means classes like Rune Fencers who get Meditate can spam them with impunity). As for the aforementioned skills like Phalanx (which knights used to get a 90% damage reduction until their next turn), Berserk (an integral part of the Berserker’s moveset that hits enemies in an AoE) and others? Well, it would simply make too much sense for them to require MP to use, so instead, Square went ahead and pulled off a brilliant move: they trigger *randomly*. Berserker never proccing the skill they were named after? In Reborn, it’s possible. Enemy knights triggering Phalanx four turns in a row and being untouchable? Sure enough, it can happen. Your mages not getting Meditate off and enemy mages getting it every turn? Hell yeah brother, cheers. It’s not enough that skills should be removed or neutered; tactical decisions like when to use one are also now stripped from you. Very cool!
    - The addition of buff cards. These things litter the battlefield and appear randomly to offer buffs like higher crit chance, better odds of triggering your random skills, higher damage, etc. These SUCK. Not only because they’re pure random, but because you have to go out of your way to grab them around the place and it kills the pace and the momentum of battles. No one wants to spend 3 turns going around gathering cards so your character can actually deal more damage. ♥♥♥♥’s bad! And not only that, but they went super lazy with this one by having every boss start with 4 buff cards right at the beginning of the battle, which strongly encourages you to use the same strategy for every fight: have two guys with lobbers throw debuff items at the enemy leader, then rush that ♥♥♥♥ down.
    - HP bloat is a ♥♥♥♥♥. You can find screenshots that compare the HP totals of enemies at certain stages in the game: we’re talking four to eight times the health compared to the PSP version, without upping the damage to compensate. Clerics also didn’t get a buff to their healing capacity, which means they are even worse than before because healing salves that you can easily buy at the store heal per percentage (50, 75 and 100%).
    - They removed the Rogue class because?
    There’s probably a lot more I didn’t mention like archers getting nerfed hard and the devs not fixing the potential issues that can arise from the WORLD system, like going through the whole-ass postgame dungeon only to realize you were on the wrong timeline and you wasted your time because you didn’t take the time to read up on the matter. Reborn is NOT the definitive edition of Tactics Ogre, which is a shame because it comes SO CLOSE but falls just short. A bittersweet experience overall."
    it is pretty long, but it is an older review, though newer reviews tend to match what this says in whole or in part.

      @@TitaniumLegman many positive reviews lack proper material as well, so positive or negative the same thing happens. the point of my post is about the argument you made in the video. the review system has two parts to it, the score and the written justification for the score. the score is put into aggregate and can get people to pass on a game or buy a game falsely due to abuse of the scoring system. the argument goes both ways as people not only review boost, but sometimes companies will pay people to give good reviews giving a false positive. people upset at some aspect of the game that was stated on the store page were well informed before they bought the game and are falsely putting a negative review.
      the second part of the review, the written justification is what you looked at for the scores, but you didn't demonstrate how to get a look at the reviews in a way to actually filter for those that had a negative opinion and those that had a positive opinion in order to inform people how to use Steam's reviews in order to make a decision on the game. you seemed to just not like how Steam's system worked, but instead of blaming Steam or explaining specific problems of how the system is bad you looked at the conclusion and blamed the raters.
      the issue you seem to have is that people feel others need to know certain things, and as they have to give a score if they dislike the stuff they are telling people about they put a negative score to their review. had the store page mentioned the things they are talking about then they would look like idiots and not have gotten as many people finding their review helpful. had there been neutral reviews they could have mentioned such things and not affected the aggregate score so that people could make informed decisions about design choices that they felt might impact whether or not they like the game. the negative reviews are consistent in their gripes, and that means they are not some crazy people just trying to bomb the game. in fact you said as much in your video that they do not like the direction the game went and has a negative experience as a result. this justifies their reviews, and your gripe was the negative aggregate score and thus you felt that they should have just kept their mouth shut so that others will have the same negative experience since not everyone will have that negative experience in spite that there are a significant number of people with the same expectations that fell short in the same way.

      That was an excellent example of a good review. The person left a thorough explanation of their experience from interacting with the game and is one of many better information you can find from investigating the Steam user review section. When reviewing the user review section, I often employ caution to overly positive and overly negative reviews. Sometimes the positive reviews can misguide consumers by simply stating "good" or is disguising its context to be more appropriate to "be careful when buying; you might not enjoy the game as much as you'd expect and cannot refund after exceeding a certain clause in the Steam refund policy." Just as positive reviews can be disguised as a negative, so too can negative reviews disguise some positive elements in the game that may be worth investigating more into. Overall, as consumers in a market, we should strive to prod the integrity of ratings and user reviews to discern if what people feel about a product is honest and that the reviews are not trying to deceive us by "yes"-men or "no"-men (people who will try to influence you to take immediate action at the cost of making less-informed and unconfident decision). More respectable reviews present their genuine thoughts of the product experience and do not have to affirm for others to submit or withhold their funds (e.g. "You should buy!", "Do not buy!", or "Do not listen to what the others think/say!") or dismiss conflicting critiques by other users.
      If you want to try more advance ways to analyze the mix of user reviews, try opening the filter to allow all languages and permit your language preferences in your user account settings. In this video, TitaniumLegman either did not understand or assumed that the data of user reviews invites all users of varying languages. What you will most likely see is your preferred language (English in this example) and that data only represents one fraction of the entire population (all who participated in the review). You'd be surprised by the number of insights from other users from all over the world. I used Google Translate to assist interpreting texts.

Whereas, the positive comments really dive into the good core elements of a game. Then outside of the, we'll usually lookup gameplay and other reputable review sources to see if it's really worth a shot to play.

Random stats on level, loot drops, whether effects, crits, hot and dodge, the list goes on. Buff cards as a way fo simulate an evolving battlefield is just one more type of rng that is easily played around, and yet their existence is the most common bludgeon people use to bash the game. It is true the bosses have an unfair advantage in reborn can't argue with that; they not only have 2 levels up your party level but also set up with buff cards from the start. But i guess this is to compensate the lack of strategy the AI now has; in the PSP version AI was way more playful in terms of how they will annoy you, now in reborn, it only goes for the weakest to hack off their HP, and nothing more, it go suicidal just to hit the one they have a advantage against, regarding completely their safety, so its easy to pick them out like shooting fish in a barrel. Reborn also attack way more aggressively all at once, so it will be more often than not you will see your troops getting incapacitated, in the psp they send troops one by one, taking time to build their AT and MP, now they send a wizard to poke your knight with a staff because they have no MP, having this in mind it's easy to turn the odds to your favor. Reborn, other than boss fights, is fairly easy in this matter, you will use items more often, in psp you barely ever use them now they are key and an important asset for your strategy, also there is no need to grind for stuff as you get them wile you level up, so you can most likely ditch your initial characters for other new ones with the spells or weapons skills you want to max out. in this terms is a bit sad as your initial characters are not special anymore, they are expendable, and again is logic as how often you will see them fall in battle.
    My only Huge Critic is in Reborn they entirely remove the Rogue class for being recruited entirely. This makes the game feel incomplete in my opinion, i mean we have them before, now not, ...btw my rogue was Cistina in the PSP version, now guess i will leave her as a Valkyrie, which IMHO is the best non unique class in reborn.

    To be fair, I did dislike that you couldn't grind, all of the people I know that play tactics games do enjoy what the guy said about the small experienced elite force overcoming overwhelming odds, so you did strengthen the point that Steam reviews are extremelly useful. Game doesn't have the complexity of XCOM and you can still cheese most missions with all archers, so the "but you have to think now" argument isn't valid, the problems come from those of us that don't want to cheese it that way and prefer to experiment, even if the builds we make aren't necessarily optimal.
    That said I did find a mod that lets you grind which is why I bought it in the end, so it's not really that much of an issue.
    As for the overall thing with Steam reviews, they are all useful always, I have bought games on mixed like some of the M&B clones which I love for example, but you have to read them. If ypu are a fan of M&B and sandboxes and you see most Negative Reviews are guys complainig about no story, you can safely ifnore those because story is not why you play those games in the first place.

    I think the one thing that goes when it comes to steam reviews for me personally is in situations where I'm on the fence, haven't been able to find any footage or gameplay of it somehow and off that word of mouth, it can be an interesting thing. I know that myself and my brothers got pretty excited when we once saw this starship troopers game come out that was similar to darktide/vermintide/aliens firestorm assault etc. But before buying it, we gave the reviews a quick look to see how many memes or jokes where gonna be present and we saw one thing that turned us off and I haven't seen be implemented(been a while and might've missed an update but still) "no Australian servers", which immediately put us off because we were basically gonna be in an unplayable state which is why we look through those reviews for those tiny little things that would prevent us from playing the game. I believe that steam reviews being public is both a positive and a negative because you do get an unskewed look at the people playing it and the only ones worth looking at for me personally are those who have sunk a bunch of hours on it in the first place. For TOR, I see it as more not so much of old heads, but people who have played the previous versions or experienced them through osmosis of others that have developed an opinion that is in conflict with the changes made in TOR. I know in one of the discords I'm in which is full of old heads that have played these older games that I just didn't have access to as a kid, just haven't even bother playing TOR, because they have the previous copies right there that they've already sunk a bunch of time into and these people looking for at these changes that aren't being jived with are ingrained with a certain mindset from their past experiences. And because these are only on recent reviews, maybe it's people who didn't know or get the chance to access it till then and left these comments. For every one "this change was made that I didn't like", I bet there will be 10 people saying the exact opposite so unless you don't read full in depth all the different reviews if you are considering a game on steam and only looking for the negative reviews, then I say that you didn't want to play the game in the first place. I know Crimson banner hasn't gotten my interest yet from what I've seen, but my backlog is also crazy big, I'd be insane for trying to get that while I still haven't even finished TOR(completely, I've done law route and that's it) but maybe at some point I'll give it a go. Ultimately what I'm trying to say is it comes down to people who use negative reviews to judge a game, are just looking for an excuse in the first place to not play it in the first place because people are dumb and stubborn and an overall train wreck.

    Steam reviews you absolutely have to take with a grain of salt, as how passionately someone feels about very specific thing and how we can easily be emotional, that how it compromises their experience can translate (to them) to an objectively bad game. You have to evaluate the rating with the comment and determine how it resonates with your inner criteria.
    I guess my thing is, that on the other side of the coin, someone can have a great time with something that has aspects that others might not mesh with. I've played well rated games that I just put down because of a misalignment with mechanics or creative decision doesn't do it for me. Disgaea is supposed to be amazing, but I don't like anime and the dialog made me want to dive into a meat grinder. There were many other things about the gameplay itself I didn't mesh with. I came away from the game thinking it just wasn't good. Although I didn't rate it, I can see how mileage might vary.
    I struggled to get into Tactics Ogre Reborn as well and the reasons you read out actually resonated super well with me. The decision to not allow over levelling to me would have been much more well received as a toggle-able option or a constraint to be placed in a higher difficulty level. It felt like such an artificial constraint to not be able to develop your characters but still have battles. "Sorry I can't learn any more or get stronger from battles until I pass an arbitrary story point.". I 100% get the balancing consideration, but to me it was a misfire that inappropriately controlled how someone can enjoy the game, amplified that it was something that wasn't present in earlier iterations. That being said, although it made it unappealing to me, I didn't leave a review saying that it was a bad game, and I guess that's your main point. So all of the above shenanigans to say I agree haha.

    I don't think there is anything wrong here with the reviews.
    75% (currently sitting at 74% overall) says 3/4 people liked the game which I think is fair.
    Of course a lot of people glance over a 7/10 review nowadays because there are so many games and everyone wants to play the 9/10s, but for a niche genre like tactics rpgs, a remake of a console game on pc that's a really good score.
    Also it's a ~55US$ game, so for that price you easily can buy 1.5-2 indie games in the same genre, which are offering more for the price (looking at fell seal or battle brothers)
    The tactics genre is a niche genre and ogre also was conceived many years ago and not the smoothest experience then going by the reviews of the time.
    I think it's fair to say that a game released in 1995 might not hit general audience taste 28 years later, despite pinpoint improvements a remake makes.
    Ogre was made for consols and optimized for consols and the amount of consol-related jank in the game which could be optimized with mouse over and other pc-natives.
    I don't think that the review which says the game is not open about what's happening is unfair, i mean yeah rewind function... contemporary game design foun dbetter ways to present this the last years and overall speed in games is way quicker nowadays.
    The point is more that the world moved on, many new ideas in gamedesign have been iterated on, and Ogre also never rose to the popularity levels of a Final Fantasy Tactics, which just is a way smoother, way less convoluted experience and is not only more beloved because of the bigger IP only.
    All I am saying is that Ogre in itself probably was an 8 to 8.5 / 10 game back in the time.
    Now it's as a fullprice game a 7.5/10 in the current market situation
    I think that's impressive.
    I think for 30 bucks it would sit easily at 80%
    Can't think of many 28 year old action, rpg, jrpg, stealth or shooter games which hold up that well after all this time, unless they got a ground-up overhaul.
    And steam reviews have to be seen in a current context of the market, with the current concurrence available at the time.

    I like Tactics Ogre, but the drops rates are disgustingly low. This is annoying because a lot of post game content requires your party to have gear that require securing late and post game drops. I enjoy grinding, but since the level cap is super low, you're almost exclusively grinding for drops that rarely appear. That, in my opinion, makes playing the game a lot less fun. That is my personal opinion.

    Good old Coffee P. did a video recentish about this; he points out how TO has mechanics that can be a struggle to get a handle on, and how a lot of people who reviewed early on dropped out of the game only to return much later and actually get a handle on it… Which might not be the case for everyone but is not invalid.
    I think compared to pre-2010, we’d also get a greater proportion of reviews that were done by people who actually fully finished the games in question; nowadays anyone can drop almost anything in some capacity. And not everyone is required to finish a game if they can’t (one RUclipsr I admire dropped FFVII Remake late into it, and cited how the excessively flashy graphics actually gave them headaches while playing… which, yeah I don’t blame them).
    But in the case of these games, it’s a bit perplexing how much certain people got turned off; especially “Reborn” haters who can’t stand the changed mechanics. It makes everyone who found TriStrat story-heavy tame in comparison… And this isn’t like criticisms of poor business practices which can only be heard with review-bombing

    The comments in this video made me think this person was going to hate on justified opinions but... I don't see it. The reviews are overly negative about Reborn. If I can no-ko the game with a team made of squishies like warlocks, fusiliers and such it means the game isn't that brutal or rng-like. And really, pushing the player to use debuffs is bad now? Man silly me, I thought a strategy game should encourage the player to use all their tools, but I suppose not! And about the elite army... You can still create an elite army without being overlevelled. The plethora of options you have in chapter 4 are insane. Dragons, Gryphons, Patriarch/Matriarch, Liches, Necromancers, Rangers and even a Dark Knight herself, you are constantly overpowering the enemy army in the final main story beats.
    However I do also think that there should have been a normal and hard mode tho, since the game does not teach you how to deal with super stacked bosses AND the game lies to you about them. What do I mean?
    The bosses have a hidden damage multiplier. For example, if your units has 300 in magic attack and the boss has 295, the latter will still hit harder with a spell even without a card. This combined with 2 int card does make for a powerhouse of a boss.
    Considering these guys get a big power advantage, the game could have used a normal mode where bosses do not start with the cards, allowing players to ease into the lategame a little, and a hard mode which is what we currently have, with super powerful endgame bosses that force more advanced strats.

    I dunno this video seems super hypocritical. The reviews are there to help people on an average see if a game is worth buying. A game can be good but not fit the criteria of what someone wants. I for one appreciate the negative reviews they highlighted some aspects that I would have totally disliked. After reading the reviews and watching further videos on the card system I 100% bounced off that idea and that was all thanks to the reviews. Those aren't even bad negative reviews they give some constructive criticism, some are mini essays which are far better then the "this game is butt" types.
