My Aunt, who was an artist/crafter gave me some advice from her instructor; he said your best work is what you throw in the garbage because it's what you have learned from.
Emma, I discovered you at the beginning of my watercolor journey in 2020. This past year I’ve had some health issues so I’ve not been on here. It was so exciting to see your growth, not only in painting, but in confidence. I thoroughly appreciate how you teach and I enjoy watching and listening to your insight. Thank you for what you do.
I have been watching you since your first baby used to sit on your lap so I’ve seen you come a long way. Your teaching methods are excellent and you seem so much more happy and self confident. Keep up the good work. You’re beautiful….. Not to mention your work.
Amazing how beautiful a monochrome painting can be. The simplicity of it, combined with that beautiful color and the depth from so many values is calming, yet gorgeous at the same time. Love it! Going to watch again and try it. Thanks for all your great totorials.
You are an amazing teacher who explains things so well. I have been about to give up....after going down the youtube rabbit hole and watching so many how-to videos. Thank you.
I know I’m just some stranger on the internet, but…please don’t give up. Your creative, artistic soul has every bit as much right to expression and joy as anyone else’s, and I don’t doubt that you have beauty and creativity to gift to the world. I say this as someone who frequently fights with the urge to give up because I’m not as talented, experienced or knowledgeable as teachers on RUclips. I believe in you!
I always find your videos encourage me to play with watercolour and practice which all helps to develop skills and confidence. Your skills are not only with painting but in teaching as well. Wonderful
For those who know, lapis lazuli is exceedingly rare and actually running out. Old ultramarine blues used to be made with the stone, but because of its rarity, chemical processes were pursued in order to preserve what little we have left. It is an absolute treasure to have a lapis lazuli pigment in your watercolour kit!!
Doing a monochrome study is a really great idea and helps to identify value in colors. Having the right color values all throughout the piece can make all the difference in a whether your art is good or great. 👍
Beautiful blue flowers. Thankyou for sharing about value this has been really helpful, and using your phone to see if you have enough value in your painting is really good. Love this video xxx
That feeling you get when it comes to water/paint in your brush is artistic intuition and you have developed or were born with good artistic intuition. You make painting look so easy! Emma, I have a problem “dabbing” or wiping my brush off onto a paper towel for fear of “ wasting “ my expensive, precious paint. I know that this fear I have is a culprit for unneeded mistakes and I feel it’s holding me back. Any sage advice from you or your viewers on how to get over this “ fear of product waste” that I have?
It’s mostly water not a waste of expensive paint. You’re wasting more by using too much water or paint on your paper. That means you’ve wasted time, paper and experience learning. You are learning and in time you will gain more control. Trust the process. You’re worth it. Placing all that worry on yourself takes the joy from using watercolor. Have fun learning guilt free. There’s enough worry in the world without one more.😊👍💯
Such a great monochromatic painting. And the color is amazing…. Used by Michelangelo to paint his angels and Johannes Vermeer to paint a scarf on The Girl with a Pearl Earring, not to mention many other artists throughout the art history.
Okay, so I've seen a lot of these tonal videos that "are do as I say, not as I do." For instance, I saw a video that says "just tap every so lightly and don't fill your brush" ... to find that it's exactly what they've done as the video progresses. Same here. Load your brush with color, rinse, tap, add more water, and then paint. I don't fault you guys. Not at all. I know it's a matter of habit. But if you're teaching, include everything. Don't leave out the reloading of water into the brush. Don't leave mixing color in the pan to "eye sight". Some paints are going to be thicker in the pan and some lighter. I've seen tutorials where they pick up color directly from the block or pan and not dilute it to get the right color without explaining. Watercolor is really difficult. it's why I dropped it in preference to acrylic and oil 2 decades ago. Now, that I do travel painting and that's not good for acrylic or oil, I need to learn watercolor. But the instructions are all over the place, with instructors saying to do one thing but doing another by the end of the video. NO WONDER why folks are confused.
Yeah, tbh I would've liked to have seen the palette and what she was doing with the colour when out of sight especially as I'm more a visual learner. Someone can tell me exactly what and why they're doing something but if I cant see it all then the pieces don't fit together in my head, but that's just me. Apart from that though, she did explain everything well, and it was a lovely piece.
Thank you Emma for sharing this video with us. It was very interesting and an excellent way of teaching about values of colour and how water controls so much of the painting used in the right way. I loved that blue you used is so beautiful. Look forward to the next tutorial take care 🙌
It definitely is a stunning colour, great tutorial too! I was planning to redo a monochrome landscape that I have already done in paynes gray in a completely different colour, just deciding on which colour 🤔
This is a great video! You continue to make me want to paint and hopefully someday create something half as beautiful as the pieces you paint. I continue to learn so much from you and enjoy your videos so much. I keep looking at my watercolors and I'm so nervous to start actually putting paint on the paper. For some reason! I don't know what I'm so afraid of, it's silly.
A trick I have learnt for values is using red cellophane. You can put a sheet either over the picture you are painting from or your painted picture and see the values quickly. First time I have seen your video liked it so much I will be subscribing. Loved this and will be trying it as going up and down the scale is something I struggle with. I'm either 2 dark or 2 light.
Hello from Newmarket 🙂 I subscribed to your channel a year ago, but only recently learned you're near by in Toronto area. This is a very good lesson and your approach to teaching it is so helpful! I plan to reference this again and again. Thank you, Emma!
Love your videos! Just wanted to tell you how to pronounce the color since I'm a speech pathologist and I can't resist. You said Lapis correctly, but the next word is laz- (like "has"), u- (like "you"), li- (like "lie"). Hope that helps! Your videos really help me as an artist. 💓
As a deaf artist who doesn’t get to speak english much in a mainly french community, it’s a pretty useful comment for me, thanks! I can’t hear how she pronounced it but maybe she pronounced it in french?
Great tutorial! My favorite color has always been light blue. Mr. Harding has definitely given that color new meaning! Guess what? Is going to be the next color on my palette? Your painting is beautiful! Thanx for sharing the gorgeous paint!
So great thanks for this video! I love learning from you. The only thing I will admit that sometimes annoys me is that in using all these incredible products, you sometimes forget that others are painting along with you and don’t have all the resources you do. It would be so helpful to simply add a line about what color you might use if don’t have this very rare, special pigment in your beginners palette. But overall, great experience!
I love this! You are such an excellent instructor!! ❤ I've been learning from you since 2021; I'm definitely past the beginner stage, but this love doing practice like this with you!! I do love watercolor and paint daily; but what is the next step in learning? I feel like I want to paint a pretty floral piece, but I get hung-up on the design and composition. I can come up with limited color palettes and have good watercolor control and can paint florals quit well. But now matter how much I research composition. I feel stuck almost like I'm at the beginning again. It's like a gap in learning I can't figure out. I'm very visual and learn by seeing and watching someone do the thing. Do have any suggestions or can you do more videos on composition and design. I know you have do a few in the past and you target beginners, but I love your teaching style so I would love it from you!
I am a photorealistic animal portraiture artist with pencils. However recently I have expanded my journey into watercolor because I've wanted to do them for so many years. Sadly I only have a very tiny selection of professional colors. My finances just are not there because I'm disabled. I am so wanting a lapis lazuli and I'm wondering if the Michael Harding is worth the cost versus other lapis lazulis? It's something I would have to save up for but it is a color that I think would greatly benefit me for backgrounds in my animal portraits.
I’m wearing a lapis lazuli bracelet right now!! It’s the color associated with Archangel Michael. Are you self taught? Regardless, I’d say it’s born-in anyway! Beautiful. Thank you!!
Many people have a difficult time pronouncing Lazuli. . It is pronounced la-zu-lee (with accent on the 'la'), but you don't have to say this word. Just say Lapis and everyone knows that it's Lapis Lazuli 😜. However you pronounce it, you paint very well with it and that's all that matters.
How does a beginner know what details to add after it's dry? When watching you, I can definitely see the difference, but is there a checklist for Beginners to know what to look for?
Hmm good question. For the details I like to add is more depth to the centre of flowers. I feel like that is what makes it stand out the most. Then additional shadows and such to other parts of the petals and leaves.
Thank you so much for answering. I appreciate your feedback. I just tried this one. .... .... ugh.. ... .. .... I think I want to be successful without the practice. Haha. I do love your tutorials. Thank you.
My Aunt, who was an artist/crafter gave me some advice from her instructor; he said your best work is what you throw in the garbage because it's what you have learned from.
thats such a fresh take ❤
Love this!!!
Thank you for sharing that bit of advice truly inspiring.😊👍
You should do a tea set or a vase with this colour... you'll find yourself admiring it for days..

Love the flowers but that pattern is awesome it looks so organic. Your teaching methods just make me happy.

Oh I agree, very beautiful colour and I love how your painting came together with the different tonal values. I’m going to give this a go. Thank you.
I struggle a lot with controlling my brush and making leafs. And just painting florals in general...
Same here. I end up with a page of blobs on stems.
Doing a monochrome study is a really great idea and helps to identify value in colors. Having the right color values all throughout the piece can make all the difference in a whether your art is good or great. 👍

I love the blue. Like Delft china. Thank you Emma Jane. Great tip on looking at saturation for variation. Thanks.
Excellent lesson, Emma! I so appreciate ALL the detailed steps that I think about. You are amazing!!❤

What an awesome lesson Emma! And that color is gorgeous! Thanks so much!🥰
That was so relaxing, seeing you paint....thanks a lot
Thank you so much. I get chills when watching videos like this. Your explanation is crystal clear
Beautiful. I love monochromatic paintings. Thank you.
My sister sent me ypur book, and some water colors. I cant wait to learn all that i can! I always loved to draw and paint.

I so needed this, super helpful!! You are just the best teacher out there!!
It definitely is a stunning colour, great tutorial too!
I was planning to redo a monochrome landscape that I have already done in paynes gray in a completely different colour, just deciding on which colour 🤔
So true about just experimenting! I discovered the 3/8" dagger striper brush, I love it!!! Especially holding it "upside down"!!
Thank you! What a great way to learn water control!!
Very informative and helpful. Thankyou very much. Such a lovely piece.
Thankyou! Well explained and demonstrated. Love love love the colour 😍

This is an excellent value study! Thank you.

Your painting is beautiful! Thanx for sharing the gorgeous paint!
Beautifully Taught !
It was so much fun watching you paint with your son on the other video. He's quite a little artist.❤🦋
Thankyou for such a clear and concise explanation of your beautiful work ,cannot wait to try😊
You make it look so easy. ❤
Stunning work, thanks for sharing ❤
Love what you are painting. ❤❤❤

Thanks! I’ve learned so much from you! I love your style.
Watch you often w/o commenting! This is great
Awesome! Great lesson! This will be fun to do with lots of other colors too. :)
Beautiful flowers, love the blue shades. I struggle with placement on the page. Do you have a video on that?
Such a great idea! I never looked at it that way before. It might help me learn to control my intensity impulse!
Hot tip - a terry cloth is a sustainable alternative to using paper towel to blot!

Hullo Emma, This is a sweet video with plenty of information for everyone! Thanks again for sharing your expertise and knowledge with us.

That is such a beautiful color! Emma, does Winsor & Newton have a color that might be similar to this color? Thanks. 😊
fantastic thank you
Dutch Blue!
This video was very helpful!
Cool exercise! I love your vibe and the „experimental“ method that you recommend.
Where is your sketchbook from? ❤
My fav color

Love this!❤️🦋
Noah was adorable on the livestream. Just so sweet and cute just like my grandkids are - occasionally ☺️ 😆
I love you explaining this DEMOS YOU OR SO GOOG AT IT. I ORED ONE OF YOUR FIRST BRIUSHES AN GOT ONE THAT SOMEONE USDED A COPY OF YOUR BRUSH ES.❤
I did this exercise. Honestly, it went better that I expected.
Wish I could figure out how to comment with a picture. Is that even possible on YT?
So pretty!!
I’m wearing a lapis lazuli bracelet right now!! It’s the color associated with Archangel Michael.

Hi Emma,
May I know the name of the MH blue color? Enjoyed watching your video. Thank you!
That is amazing

this is so good ☺☺
I liked the light color palette and the corner composition! I am from Oklahoma, USA. Love your videos. Been a fan for a few years now. 😊
Brilliant ❤️🦋
