  • In this video I show you three ways I save money with meal planning and Paprika App and demo three of the less well known features of the app:
    - tracking food you've grown and/or bulk buys which are due to expire using Paprika App's Pantry function
    - use Paprika's Menu function to create standardised rotatable meal plans to save time on weekly and monthly food planning
    - Move from meal plans to an exportable Paprika App Grocery List for use in iOS Reminders, print off or even send off your shopping list by email to someone else!
    Paprika is my favourite recipe app and has some amazing meal planning features. Paprika is available on Mac, IOS, Windows and Android - here I'm using the iPad version which is my favourite. This isn't a sponsored video by the way - I just love this app and making the video has made me realise how I can get even more from it, saving money and reducing food waste at the same time. What's not to like?
    Once you're up and running with the app, have a look at my Paprika Pro Tips for how you can adapt the set up to include meal prep, level up your recipe search skills and quick ways to 'roll with the lunches' (see what I did there?) when plans go pear shaped:

    Thanks - you turned on a light bulb for me! I've been quite inconsistent about keeping track of the food in my big freezer, so when I sit down to plan meals, I don't know what kind of meat or convenience food is in there - and do I still have packets of my homemade chile and spaghetti sauce? I'm now going to put all this in the pantry section. When I use something, I can check it off, and when I make a big batch of something I'll add how many portions I have. I wish Paprika would let us name pantries the way we do grocery stores. It would be so sensible to have names like "spice cupboard, freezer, hall pantry."

    This is genius! I never could make the menu section work for me. The only way I’ve used it is to record a specific meal, say Christmas. In your example, you have expiration dates for foods in your pantry. Where do these come from? Thanks for this it’s going to make my meal planning much easier. Sarah from Tennessee

    • @CookingandCalm
      @CookingandCalm  Год назад +1

      Ah thank you so much Sarah - yes it's so flexible and I'm glad my ideas helped. I put those expiration dates in for a few different ways. Sometimes it's from the packet eg I bulk buy lentils and sometimes put in something we often have on food over here called 'best before date' - not gone off, but may be a bit stale. Then if it's my home grown food that is a long storer like winter squash, I know more or less how long they last so I take an educated guess and add in a date so I make sure I don't forget to use them. Then with my dried herbs and spice drawer (there's a video on this ) I like to do an audit regularly so I use the expiry date section to remind me to check they're all good and not end up with 10 year old turmeric 🤣. I have very poor memory so these things help me but I don't stick rigidly and keep changing it up. Good to connect and I hope all is well over there for you and yours in this new year 😊

      @@CookingandCalm I don’t know if you have Paprika on the iPhone, but I just stumbled on the fact that you can dictate recipes you have to input by hand!!! It opened up a new world for me. There’s a few things you have to do to get it to work in recipes, like saying the punctuation and saying “new line” when inputting the ingredients, but I love it! Maybe I’m the last one to know about this, but better late than never, I say. Happy new year to you too! Thanks for the detailed reply. ☺️

    • @carolwoodard2733
      @carolwoodard2733 3 года назад +1

      I need to find more time myself. The bast part about adding recipes for us is that I can stop saying “where is that new recipe we wanted to try?” . My husband grills at least 5 times a week and we enjoy trying new recipes. He send me recipes all the time so now I can find them! The pantry inventory is a looming task though...I’ve figured out how to break it down so it’s manageable. That actually is my most valuable part of that app. Thanks again for your info!

    • @CookingandCalm
      @CookingandCalm  3 года назад +1

      That sounds like the right idea to me. I don't get too 'completist' about it as otherwise it could become a full time job. I monitor the things that matter to me and I upped my usage once we hit lockdown because suddenly it was far more important to know how much flour I had etc. When things are more normal I tend to just do a bit of a stocktake now and again and get it to a 'good enough' stage. I often buy groceries in bulk through a health food co-op so I make sure I do an update before I make 'the big order' and it's invaluable for that. My mind tells me I have plenty of certain ingredients- in real life, it's wrong. Paprika is more reliable than my memory :)

    Thank you for this video, and for your channel -- I've just subscribed! I have three questions about the Pantry function.
    1. I was adding items to the Pantry section yesterday, and when I created a new Aisle category, I accidentally did it twice. Is there any way that you know of to remove a duplicate Aisle?
    2. In the case of items that you don't use all at once -- say, a bag of apples, a bag of flour, or a container of oats -- how do you track how much you've got left? Do you add it to your grocery list as soon as you open your last container, or do you wait until you're nearly finished with it?
    3. Is there a way to estimate an expiration date for home-grown items?
    Thanks so much!

    • @CookingandCalm
      @CookingandCalm  4 года назад +1

      Hi Sarah and thank you for subscribing and joining us here on the channel.Welcome and well wishes to you 😊.
      On your questions: (1) Are you on Iphone/iPad ? If yes,swipe left on the duplicate aisle and you’ll get the delete option. (2) yes you’re right , I tend to work on the principle that ‘1 is none’ and add it when I’m down to say 1 bag of flour.Other things like fruit ,I don’t track super closely but just have a look routinely and add as needed. I hope that helps.
      (3) with home grown it depends on the crop. I’m still learning but, for instance, I’ve had Crown Prince Squash since last autumn and they’re still good now so I’ll know to give them an expiry date of around spring next year if I wanted to treat as true expiry. I often though treat that section as more of a ‘check on’ for long storing veg. So I’ll put an expiry of say 2 months for onions, squash,garlic and that reminds me to go check in case they’re starting to rot. If they’re fine I just knock it forward another month or two.Does that make sense?

    I’ve enjoyed watching your videos and am learning so much. How do you input the quantity in the pantry on your bulk items? I buy lots of items in bulk and have buckets of oatmeal, flour, sugar, etc. I’m not sure how to record those correctly to manage what I have.

    • @CookingandCalm
      @CookingandCalm  3 года назад

      thank you so much Louise. It really varies for me depending on the ingredient. eg. when I buy peanuts, I tend to make peanut butter in batches and each batch takes 4 cups. As I don't have a proper cold store I tend to vac pack the peanuts in those 4 cup sizes and I log them as that. For other things like Oats I don't tend to get too detailed about it and tend to log it as say "oats- bulk and then the purchased weight in Kg (or imperial measure if in US). I have a 'one is none' approach and as soon as I'm on that last bag , I get a new one on the shopping list. I hope that makes sense - it would be too time consuming to log everything for me , so I tend to go back to what my intention is to help me be pragmatic. (ie. I don't want to run out of oats) - so as long as I know when I'm down to my last 3kg or whatever, that keeps my cupboards stocked and gives the happy feeling. I hope that helps. If you find other ideas do let me know :)

      Natasha Khriapina Hi Natasha. I've just had a look for you and the app itself is taking up 19mb and the data from recipes is 77.8mb for mine. I have 1109 recipes in there (how embarrassing!). I think the thing that would take up more room is if you were adding lots of your own photos for home made recipes. I'm just mapping out a video on that as Mr Growing Frugal doesn't do much cooking and I'm doing him some simple recipe cards with step-by-step photos in there. It's a great function! If it helps, I've got both apps and the iPad one really is better and does just as much as the Mac. After that, I feel your pain re the space issues. If I need other stuff not included in the recipe, I manually add it from my Wunderlist grocery list. I love both applications so much that I don't mind this inconvenience, but I wish each of them allowed for export and import to/from text apps. It would require a couple of steps, but would be more convenient. Hope that helps.

    Have you figured out a way to scale recipes for the week? If each recipe has 6 servings and you want it 4 times, then you get a grocery list that requires ingredients for 24 servings. I'm not that great at math on the fly.

    • @CookingandCalm
      @CookingandCalm  3 года назад +1

      Hi Beth - have you tried the scale function yet? If i’m understanding,you just click ‘scale’ (on iPad this is directly under the Ingredients header on the recipe card). If the recipe is for 6 portions and you want it 4 times that week, just click 4 on the scale and you’ll have your new amounts which would make 24 portions. Then you can click on the little shopping basket icon to add them to your shopping list . Does that help, or did I misunderstand the question? Ps you can also scale down recipes which is super handy if just cooking a quick meal for 1

      Thank you Burro. Yes I find that a little clunky too. For some things Paprika ‘decides’ which Aisle to put it in based on their own algorithm and throws everything else into a Miscellaneous section. For me I often want to put things into a specific section I’ve created myself, or I don’t agree with tier ‘auto-file’ so I tend to add whatever it is, then open it up as an individual item then change the ‘aisle’ at the bottom of that screen. I hope I understood what you’re 👍asking correctly, and that helps. Keep going. it’s a complicated app but really worth the effort in the end 😊

This allows me to do a "Sort by Expiration Date" within the pantry every month or so and to make sure I'm using up anything that's coming towards my estimated spoilage date. Hope that helps Patti.
