One of the best things about experiencing Phish live, besides the music, is the work of Lighting Director Chris Kuroda, aka CK5. CK5, because he is considered the fifth member of Phish. Probably the best L.D. working these days.
After watching em doin WatcheroftheSkies in front of Genesis I always thought that I should check em out. I liked the quirk element to their muso leanings and thought the refrain's last crescendo worked very well. More please! Thanks.
That guy you see in the orange/nectarine is Nectar, owner of Nectar's, one of the first clubs Phish played often. It's where I first heard them while walking by on Main St. as a UVM freshman in 1987. At the time, to me, sounded like noise. I would get into them in 1990, then see my first show in Barre VT in 91. There were 200-300 people . Lifetime fan. Last show was Halloween 2014 Vegas. It was also a restaurant famous for the inexpensive fries smothered in gravy.
This was great. I probably haven't listened to this version in 25 years, and it was surprisingly satisfying. I'm conditioned to like it because it's always a welcome addition to a set. Your next step should be an opening title track like "Rift," (The Story of the) "Ghost," "Farmhouse," "Fuego," or "Sigma Oasis," all excellent introductions to some of the better albums.
Phish - the live stuff will *always* be better than the studio stuff, which comes off flat. The energy they put into their live performances will make you forget they ever sang one note and this song, "Stash", is EPIC when played live.
Bro. It’s good to listen to the studio to hear what they intended for the audience to hear at that time. Their studio albums are the shit…. At least everything before joy 😘
@@Primus-ue4th Couldn’t agree more. It’s like cooking for me. The first time I make a recipe I follow it to the letter. After that I’ll fool around with it a bit to make it better fit my tastes. Phish’s live performances are variations of their original recipes.
I agree with your analysis. Phish is fun, they're playful and a bit zany, but they rarely go deep when it comes to their lyrics, but neither am I sure if that is ever their intention being that they're primarily performance art although their song FAST ENOUGH FOR YOU I find moving.. Having seen them several times live in their earlier days at local pub called Nectar's watching them is quite the experience because their depth comes from watching their avant garde concentration.
This album...A Picture of Nectar is really a great listen, no bad songs and put Phish in the mainstream spotlight. Living in Burlington, VT in the 90s and getting to see them live was always a great show, the album was dedicated to Nectar Rorris who owned the bar(called Nectars) where they first started playing, if you look at the album cover you will see his face
For more of a ballad, with lyrics that are more than just fun pegs for the music, try "Horse/Silent in the Morning". Or "My Friend, My Friend" for some short but intense characterization.
One of my favorite bands. I have seen them many times live and it is a unique show every time, like when they covered DSOTM in my hometown for a tiny crowd of phans who made the show after their halloween stand in Vegas. I prefer their live recordings but this stash is better than I remembered.
You'll love Billy Breathes and Rift if you havent already checked them out, two incredible albums with so many good songs, impossible to choose a favorite, enjoy 👍
"I know you're listening to the guitar, but I'm listening to the bass" I made that mistake the first couple of years I followed them, but EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM is phenomenal. This band could not exist without all of them. I would almost argue it's a piano/drum band ("Contact" for example). Not doing live videos... Phish, like the Grateful Dead, is famously lenient with show recordings so that makes little sense. They expressly grant permission to record all audio at all shows. (they don't allow video, that's true). My take on the lyrics-- it's an acid trip. Maybe that's just because I was on acid the first time I heard it?
You'll never understand the singing until you SEE them live. Not just hear them. There's something godly about the way their harmonies blast through the music.
I realize this is 6 months old now and maybe you have already, but I’d highly suggest listening to their live tracks. Since 2003 they’ve been recording and releasing every live show, so they are easily accessible. I can’t even tell you the last time I listened to a studio album, gotta be 20 years when round room released. Anyway Phish is an entirely different animal when it comes to live renditions
A lot of the slower songs have more lyrical impact, like Life Boy, Billy Breathes, If I Could, Dirt, Farhouse.... many more. But here is the reality with phish. It's kind of an all in or all out thing. It's not like a random band like Ween where you could enjoy a few songs and leave the rest. Either it clicks and you go deep with them or it doesn't. It simply cannot be forced.
Hi Justin. Dave from across the Wide Open Space. I have heard of Phish and, more than the last track you played, this is more what I expected of them. Jazz, melodic, a warm Latin feel, maybe a little Carlos Santana meets Al di Meola. I enjoyed it, but I agree with you about the vocals - not fussed with them. I also liked the build up to the more frenzied end, but I would prefer guitarist Trey to really cut loose here - I thought he was a too restrained here - I imagine this part would work better live. P.S. my song ref Wide Open Space is by Mansun.
Actually, as far as copyright goes, you’re better off using live material because they allow the audience to record concerts. Whereas, using the studio version that’s fully copyrighted by the record studio.
I've seen the name but this is first time I've actually heard anything by them. Good musicians, probably more enjoyable live in the right setting, but on first listening it just sort of passed me by
I think for a live reaction it would be fine just to listen and not watch the video to avoid any copyright problems. They have tons and tons of official live album releases, maybe check out something from their first live album "A Live One" like the song Harry Hood or Slave to the Traffic Light. (instead of just watching a performance and not showing us the video, maybe that's harder for copyright?) I know everyone is mostly just repeating the same thing, but Phish is a band where you're truly not really listening to them if you're just hearing the studio versions. And this isn't just a normal fan reaction of "oh yeah they're much better live" that you can see in comments for a lot of bands, the live improvisation is the entire point of what Phish does and where most of the soul/passion lies. I think the studio albums are still pretty good, but 99% of what I listen to is live versions.
I generally agree, but Rift actually holds together as a concept album, whereas they only play big sets of songs live on special occasions. Half of The Story of the Ghost was derived from studio jams, and I wouldn't want to do without "Meat," "Roggae," or "The Moma Dance." The synths and backing vocals overdubbed on Sigma Oasis are a revelation! Studio Phish is like any Phish--good music ignored by most people. 99% live versions sounds about right for me too.
@@josephchisholm2654 I think my favorites overall are Picture of Nectar and Farmhouse. I was actually kinda surprised by how much I enjoyed Sigma Oasis too. I don't think they ever made a bad studio album but I didn't fully appreciate them until I became a huge fan overall
Thanks for suggesting listening to the bass. (I enjoyed this well enough, and would probably go and get drunk and pass out to it if it was going on in a field nearby, too, and snooze very happily after that perfect happy ending, but I don't feel the need to go and find some more of that, right now. It was nice, but now I've had enough.) I would go back for some more *Awkward as a Drunk* though. (We all have our own oddities, maybe. Whaddever, as the popular philosophers once used to say.) ruclips.net/video/50ryvG87G_o/видео.html (The mimed lyric is "But none of them could dress up like a bottle.")
Lol to be fair, 1992 pop, gangsta rap, grunge, r&b etc had no space for Phish. However, in the company of "worst songs" from People magazine were; Madonna, 10,000 maniacs, Bobby Brown, R Kelly, Sinead O'CONNOR. Not a bad list to be among lmao
I went to a lot of Phish shows back in the day. They are good musicians but let's be real for a second here. Their music isn't great. They just provided a venue for young people to get stoned and find others to hook up with. That was their primary function.
Yeah... not fussed on this. Too much of a jumble. I was tolerating it until the singing started. I disliked the vocals, the overuse of percussion (though not out of place within latin rhythms), and it was definitely too long. But worst of all the later third of the track where it got all discordant. That part grated on me to the point of annoyance. Not a fan of this 'un.

Anything off of "Rift" will be up your alley. I highly suggest "Maze."
The whole album is worth a listen, in my opinion
This song live is fun for audience participation. Everyone claps the woodblock parts and sings loudly on the “Ahh a ahhh a ahh” bits. :)
Best line: "Maybe so and maybe not", it keeps you guessing. Saw a couple of these back in the '90's, always fun in concert, the audience LOVES it.

My absolute favorite song from Phish. Such great guitar riffs here.
Watching somebody react to Phish before I watch the webcast from Mexico. I’m obsessed with this band!

I can't see him enjoying Faust, but I would enjoy seeing it. "Why Don't You Eat Carrots?"

It wasn't bad. I agree. There are many famous bands which are better live than in studio. I don't know why that is. I only know it is.

Go see PHISH,,, then you will know what's up....and the lyrics to Stash are classic,,,,noob.
