omg jamel you finally did it. Love you brotha! Been waiting for this for years. I have to say this is the ultimate straight forward funk jam, so much you can feel it in your spine. But I have to say some jams are beyond magical with absolute no funk. Swinging in and out of grooves and don't forget the transitions. But when Trey (guitar) gets into his squatting stance you know the funk is coming. When Page (keys) stands up, the crowd gets down. Shared it to possibly the biggest phish group on Facebook (around 30k members).
When you’re a jam band that just so happens to have a classically trained pianist, an all time great caliber guitarist, a Mike Gordon dropping bass bombs and Fish on drums things like this happen. I saw 7 shows that summer and fall, including the Halloween show in Atlanta where they covered the Talking Heads Remains in Light album in it’s entirety the 2nd set. 1997. The Summer of Phunk tour run. Wasn’t even the official name, it’s just what it ended up being called cuz it was unavoidable. Legendary.
Nailed it! Except That was 1996's Halloween lol! Was my first show! Did 7 that summer and fall too!! Summer of Phunk and then in the fall Phish Destroys America!!!
Good point. 97 probably popped in my head cuz my last show I went to that year was the New Years Eve show in Boston cuz I was home for Christmas break from Coastal Carolina.
“I don’t know what the hell this song was about, but I don’t give a damn!” Congratulations, you’ve uncovered the key to Phish, or as we call it in the community “Surrendering To The Flow”. While I could easily suggest to you a bunch of more traditionally structured phish songs with lyrics that make you think, this is the side of Phish that keeps us all coming back. You’ve just opened a door that doesn’t close and let me tell you, everything inside the door is as mind blowing, if not more so than what you just watched. If you like the funk, there’s plenty here for you. I can’t wait to see which song you choose next man, congratulations, I’m overjoyed you’ve read the book.
He finally did it! Glad you started out with the funky stuff - hard to top this version of Tube. This was great. The way you reacted to the all of the changes in the jam shows you're following along with the band & really keyed into the details, and that "aww yeeah" look on your face when they hit those extra funky riffs makes me think you could really get into these guys. And getting really into these guys is really fun. There's a never-ending sea of high-quality music. If you want to react to another Phish song, check out some of their other territories. High octane rock and roll (Chalkdust Torture, Possum, Julius), beautiful soaring pieces (Reba, Slave to the Traffic Light, Divided Sky, Harry Hood), the scary & dark music (Stash, Carini, Maze), and the happy, silly, songs (Fluffhead, Bathtub Gin, Simple), and of course, songs like Tweezer which can contain any combination of styles. Not to mention, hundreds of covers (Jimi Hendrix, Talking Heads, The Beatles, The Stones, Led Zeppelin, Prince, Traffic, and pretty much everyone else). I'm sure you will get a lot of suggestions in the coming days, but pretty much any video of these songs between 94-98 that's popular on RUclips is guaranteed A+ material. Thanks for this reaction!
Lol all these reactors and Jamal is the best. I’ve always shook my head that no one reacts to Phish. The fact that you experienced "I literally forgot how to talk" in your very first time hearing Phish...Man, we've all been there. Hell, I was at this show and it probably happened to me at the exact same point in Tube. Great reaction.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Jamal! Loved the reaction. Phish is an incredibly deep well and a band you can certainly nerd out on if there ever was one. Enjoy the journey!

@@risksrewardsrelics51 First Tube and Last Tube debuted with a Trey side project called "The 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes" that only played once in April '98 (trey.com/tour/41798-higher-ground/), and a year later Trey formed TAB as a trio with the same drummer and bassist from that project. Many songs written by them migrated over to Phish, such as First Tube and Sand and Gotta Jibboo. But the original Tube is unrelated, which Trey wrote the music for while pulling all of the lyrics from Fish's journals.
The lyrics to the song were taken from the drummers journal, they are essentially abstract nonsense he wrote down while tripping on LSD, he didnt intend for them to become a song, but the guitarist found the journal and wrote music to go along with the lyrics.
Jamel, your reactions have bringing us all so much light and positivity throughout this whole mess. All I can say now is that I am absolutely overjoyed that you’ve discovered this band. A band who changed my life for the better in 1991 and have been changing it ever since. Welcome to the Phamily!
I got to see their Halloween show from 1996 when they played the entire Talking Heads “Remain in Light” album as a musical costume between two sets of original material. One of the most amazing concerts I’ve seen.
"Let me tell you something, alright. I don't know what this song was about and I don't give a damn." Oh yeah, Jamel, you get Phish... You get Phish. ;)
If I could give you a thousand likes for finally reacting to Phish, I would, but I don't know how. You are hands down my favorite, and the most genuinely open-minded person doing this. You are truly helping keep great music alive, and bringing people together in the process! Blessings to you and your family!
I remember seeing Phish several times in the early 90’s. They were working the club scene and could barely fill the bar. In 1993 I went back down to GA from VA to start my first week of my sophomore year in college. I hadn’t been in town for more than an hour when I was walking down the street and ran into a beautiful blonde waiting at a crosswalk. She took one look at me and said, hey do you want to go to Richmond, Va tonight and see Phish. I said I’m from Richmond and hell yes. The look on my parents face when I walked back in their door, less than a day after leaving, was priceless. It was a great show and the club was packed to capacity. It was the last time I saw them play a club. Great times.
So glad you made it!! Been a fan since "92 when two friends sat me down in their dorm room, got me stoned and turned on Reba - I've never been he same! Was good friends with Fish's mom. Being from Syracuse NY we had a group that hung with Mimi and took her to shows. I STRONGLY recommend seeing them live and getting the full experience, from "the lot" all the way through and back again. I have literally left my body gettin' down to these boys - always a wild and funky ride. As a friend back in the day used to say, "HOT AND GREASY"
Soooo very happy to see this, brother!! Phish is definitely the best out there at what they do! They are all incredible musicians and extremely cohesive. Hope to see more Phish reactions very soon...you won’t be disappointed 😉
This band did 13 shows in row at Madison Square Garden and didn't repeat a song. My kids introduced me to Phish when they were teens in the 1990s. They have followed them from town to town some years. I believe there first show they went to was at the Gorge for a few days where they paid for expenses selling grilled cheese sandwiches. It's a concert you go to and expect to just dance.

Yessir!
Set the gearshift for the high gear of your soul, Jamel!! Love this!!
Oh yea, you’ll love Phish.
Makes me smile watching somebody hear Phish for the first time and smile :)
The fact that you experienced "I literally forgot how to talk" in your very first time hearing Phish...Man, we've all been there. Hell, I was at this show and it probably happened to me at the exact same point in Tube. Great reaction.
It's also worth noting that this Tube was arguably not even the best jam of that set.
Hahah “I forgot how to talk” has def happened a time or two
You would love the vibe of the people at a Phish show. Every song is a journey.
“They really just feel like homeboys jamming together”.
FINALLY.
That’s the guitarist from Oysterhead which I know you were fond of
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Jamal! Loved the reaction. Phish is an incredibly deep well and a band you can certainly nerd out on if there ever was one. Enjoy the journey!
"That bass is Naasty" YEP, sure is! "They probably spell Funk with a PH" Yep, sure do... worlds best Phunk band!!!! Love it Jamal - keep going, and enjoy Fall of '97!
"let me tell you something - I dont know what this song was about but I dont give a damn" yup. and that is phish.
We got you on the bus, now we've phinally got you on the phish train! Been waiting for this video for a while now!
Jamal please try out the song You Enjoy Myself. It's a fun ride. So is the song called David Bowie.
Both of those for sure!!
yeah but the vocal jam.... this is a huge turnoff for any non phan lol
@@BAGAKOOS nah adds a new light in their ears!
The song after this one was a 20 minute yem.
One of the few vocal jams w instruments.
This show arguably had the best crossroads, theme, ctb, antelope, and gtbt.
YEM 6/11/94 Red Rocks. The best ever.
Remember "Great Gig in the Sky", by Pink Floyd, Jamel?
Phish does a cover of it.
Using a vacuum cleaner for the vocal parts.
True story.
I've heard them sing barber shop quartet, jimmy hendrix, ac/dc, stevie wonder etc. Multi talented and multi facetted
By the way: today is Phish’s anniversary. 12/2/83
Phish “must hears,” just to name a few:
You Enjoy Myself
Harry Hood
David Bowie
Divided Sky
Reba
Tweezer
Fluffhead
Maze
Stash
Down With Disease
Bathtub Gin
Chalkdust Torture
Slave to the Traffic Light
NICU
He would flip on Fee
A live one is probably the best intro to phish one could have haha
Might as well go on an do the Tube trilogy... First Tube, Tube, Last Tube
First and Last Tube are Trey band tunes
Or do the Mike's Groove trilogy jam of "Weekapaug Groove>Mike's Song> I Am Hydrogen" from back in the day.
@@metheus108 or the famous Slipknot!> Franklin’s Tower> Help on the Way from the Dead :P
@@dylnthmsn420 Last Tube is a Trey band song. First Tube is definitely Phish. They recorded it on Farmhouse.
This was so much fun to watch you find joy in the music.
The lyrics to the song were taken from the drummers journal, they are essentially abstract nonsense he wrote down while tripping on LSD, he didnt intend for them to become a song, but the guitarist found the journal and wrote music to go along with the lyrics.
Fishman loves LSD
Jamel, your reactions have bringing us all so much light and positivity throughout this whole mess. All I can say now is that I am absolutely overjoyed that you’ve discovered this band. A band who changed my life for the better in 1991 and have been changing it ever since. Welcome to the Phamily!
Been to almost 500 shows and This one is my favorite show.
The entire show is well worth checking out.
As is the next night. (The 30th)
I got to see their Halloween show from 1996 when they played the entire Talking Heads “Remain in Light” album as a musical costume between two sets of original material. One of the most amazing concerts I’ve seen.
Best costume IMO
Anything Phish!!!👍
"Let me tell you something, alright. I don't know what this song was about and I don't give a damn." Oh yeah, Jamel, you get Phish... You get Phish. ;)
Squirming Coil from A Live One is classic.
But the Hood, is the best hood I’ve ever heard to this day.
A live one is probably one of the greatest live albums out there. So much energy and the mix is perfect.
Phish are Excellent Musicians. They are very much under-rated.
Page side, rage side!
Always
Woo! Got me on the hook on the first note! How did I ever miss this group? Thanks for keeping great music alive!
They get very little radio play, very much fans tell a friend kind of band...dive in and hold on,they will take you places
"they prob spell funk with a ph" lolol I'm stealing that line dude. Stoked you dig it Jamel
This was a treat. Glad you caught the live version to see these brothers in action.
I don't know what this song is about either.
Hol' up - is this THE Mike Gordon?
lol
One would not be surprised
I have pondered and have no idea. But the lyrics are fun to sing and the music is so funky!
@@aaronswartz4788 yep
If I could give you a thousand likes for finally reacting to Phish, I would, but I don't know how. You are hands down my favorite, and the most genuinely open-minded person doing this. You are truly helping keep great music alive, and bringing people together in the process! Blessings to you and your family!
and so it begins!
He could spend years reacting to Phish. I’ve spent decades doing just that.
DUDE! This is by far my favorite Phish jam and your reaction was gold. I love your content, keep up the great work!
You should check out Maze by them.
I'm not usually much of a Phish fan, but they have some jams that are undeniably epic!
You’ll never get out
The Prague one in particular
You Enjoy Myself, Divided Sky, Mike's Song, Lizards, Literally every single song
Trey's damn delay pedal....ugh lol
I had so much phun doing phish tour off & on from 94 to 00
"CHEESECAKE" 😉
Happy birthday Phish
12.2.1982 the Birth of Phish
So glad you made it!! Been a fan since "92 when two friends sat me down in their dorm room, got me stoned and turned on Reba - I've never been he same! Was good friends with Fish's mom. Being from Syracuse NY we had a group that hung with Mimi and took her to shows. I STRONGLY recommend seeing them live and getting the full experience, from "the lot" all the way through and back again. I have literally left my body gettin' down to these boys - always a wild and funky ride. As a friend back in the day used to say, "HOT AND GREASY"
MY MAN!!! One of my all time favorite Phish songs, THANKS!
Check out “my friend my friend” if you could?
What a crazy jumping off point 😅 in so glad you finally started on this phase of your journey. Let's gooooooo
They even have their own channel on Sirius.
Channel 28 I believe or close to it😁
Yeah I have that channel on 24/7 also grateful dead channel and deep tracks!
Soooo very happy to see this, brother!! Phish is definitely the best out there at what they do! They are all incredible musicians and extremely cohesive. Hope to see more Phish reactions very soon...you won’t be disappointed 😉
I can’t wait for some shows.
It's a concert you go to and expect to just dance.
imo their two greatest jams are "divided sky" and "you enjoy myself"
Thank you Jamel! I’ve been waiting for this! I knew you would love them and I’m glad someone sent this version of Tube! Keep it up brother!
Dang man its almost 1 o'clock in morning here in West Virginia, I was getting ready to go to bed ,then this geeeee what a way to go to bed, hell,I be jiving in my sleep. Oh yeah
Been to phish live in MSG twice. I’ve never seen MSG so lit in my life. Felt like I was walking in a dream. Greatest concert experience of my life.
When Page gets up, I get down.
