    I always loved this song but it makes me super sad at the same time. It is about the breakup of a long time friendship after all. The fact that they were both working on a similar song makes me realize how connected their minds were on an artistic level.

    Amazing song. Had to be written about their long friendship. Would love to have seen Axl's reaction to the lyrics when he first heard them. Last 4 years of madness, sure put me straight!!!!!

    Thanks man, as always great post. I love 14 years. Definitely in my top ten. Nothing against Axl but this is one of my favorites, because Izzy is an amazing singer and songwriter and he has a very unique voice. Most of the GnR songs was Izzy and Slash. Then Axl would put lyrics to what they wrote. Axl would come up with the vocals and lyrics. Axl never gets the credit for his genius words and vocal melodies.

      I really enjoyed his backing vocals on 14 Years, because you can really hear a mix of love, disdane and pain in those "14 years of silence, 14 years of pain". Izzy's fine singer, but no match to Axl when it comes to putting raw emotions in. And the piano part is awesome too.

    Great song, one that i love really much since izzy is on Vocals and Axl adds a nice touch with his vocals. Also the coincidence when both wrote the "same song" thats insane, what are the odds hahah.

    Am I crazy, in one of those videos live of 14 years, Izzy seems to be annoyed that Axl sings the chorus with him, literally drowning Izzys voice, ( axl always wants to be the center of attention)

    • @RockNRollTrueStories2
      @RockNRollTrueStories2  7 лет назад +12

      i imagine izzy probably didn't want the piano and organ and all that stuff added to the track, but i am just guessing.

    That first pantages gig is really special, they shot the whole thing on FILM! First performance of 14 Years, first encore was Bad Apples, Shannon Hoon was there..and it's unreleased to this day. No audio or video. Hope we get it someday.
    Also it's a crime they edited out that Slash outro solo from the rough mix version of this song!

      it's even better than pro shot..it's on film, it's movie quality. you can see small snippets of the footage by the director Mark Racco who the band hired for that day, he did videos for their songs like My Michelle and Mr Brownstone, both use footage from that gig which is not available anywhere else. highly interesting stuff

    Thanks for the info. Izzy's always been my favorite, and this song rocks. I'm surprised Axl even let the band record it, since it's such a clear slap in his face. I mean, Axl's the same guy who insisted on that awful bit in Get in the Ring where he just insults critics by name, and apparently Shotgun Blues was written as an attack on Vince Neil. The dude has thin skin. The fact that he let his bandmate record a song all about Axl being nuts is kinda bizarre. Is it possible he didn't get it?

    I think axl saw the lyrics izzy made and thought izzy was trying to take over as front man so he tried making a song that was about the same concept but better

    • @hyvakoira
      @hyvakoira 4 года назад

      Maybe these were really two songs that came to be at the same time by coincidence and were put together as described - Izzy's one about a relationship with a girl and Axl's one about his friendship with Izzy (the chorus). Nevertheless, the duet of the guitar and the piano is something.

    Ya- I don’t think this is about Axl and Izzy. Listen to the lyrics. It’s clearly about a guy who is fed up with his wife/girlfriend always giving him shit throughout their 14 year relationship. Maybe Axl introduced Izzy at a show one night and said “hey- I’ve known this guy for 14 years! Now he’s gonna play a song called 14 years.” That doesn’t mean that the song is about them. Listen to the words. Pretty clear sentiment. It’s a break up song!

    Hmmm, I had heard a long time ago that this song was about Axl's childhood and being molested when he was 14. 14 years of silence, 14 years of pain. Of course, I can't remember where I heard it, but it was in the weeks leading up to the release of the Illusions albums.
