    I worked on some of the training materials when Boost was launched in the U.S., and I can confirm that “energy” meant “calories,” which was how the product description as an energy drink got approved by internal medical, regulatory and legal reviewers. There was no claim that the product somehow made consumers feel energized, though that is probably what consumers thought and what the marketing department hoped they would think. It was the only ethically questionnable positioning I ever saw the company take, but I never did think it measured up to the company’s reputation.

    They are probably not optimal as a long-term component of a diet, but having one or two handy to eat when the only other options are nothing or else something super-unhealthy, then I'd say they're solid.

    My first Fine Print video! Very interesting, thanks. A word on the Organic or non-GMO thing. AFAIK, the speaker is correct that, nutritionally, there is little or no difference. The difference is in the business model and farming practices and the consequences they have for the environment and farming practices. My understanding is that GMO products may be vital and necessary in certain situation to correct malnutrition (golden rice) or allow certain crops to thrive in areas where they might otherwise not. They may also allow mega-global corporations to basically own the DNA and force farmers to keep buying seeds. If the farmer collects seeds from their plants to re-plant, they could be sued by Dow. This is just lousy and bad for farmers. So I like that we get to know if the contents are GMO or not. Where it's necessary, good, use it. Where it's just an additional corporate profit center and a way to disenfranchise farmers, count me out.
    As for organic, Michael Pollan has a nice balanced description of the pluses and minuses in his book, The Omnivore's Dilemma.

    Looks like sales BS, as with practically every "energy" product. They don't look like a good source of anything. Maybe a quick sugar hit if you're feeling faint from over working yourself. But some tea with honey or practically anything else sugary would do before getting proper nutrition.
    I also don't think it's enough calories for a meal replacement, aside from the poor macro balance.

    • @Rose.Of.Hizaki
      @Rose.Of.Hizaki Год назад

      99% of sports and energy drinks as well as food/snacks are just marketing BS. Once you narrow down the basics of what you need, you can make your own sports drinks and energy bars and when you make your own it is super cheap and you get to control the ingredients.
      I cycle a lot so I make my own oatmeal flapjacks with dried nuts and fruits. The energy drinks are just diluted fruit squash with a pinch of salt and maltodextrin. Maltodextrin can be bought very cheaply in bulk.
      I can make enough flapjacks and drinks to keep me going for 100miles for much much less than the cost of a 5kg bag of maltodextrin.

    The very best energy bars are what the Amerindians made and traded with Upper Canada. Pemmican. The only carbs being sun-dried local small fruit found in fields.
    My opinion - these bars are garbage - I make my own with 70% chocolate, pure almond butter (that you see the fat floating on top when new), and any nut blend with no added sugars, no wheat or soy.
    All stuff you find a Walmart / Trader Joes, melt it together in the microwave (10s bursts and mix) and put in silicone molds, put in fridge.
    The carbs found in decent quality 70% chocolate is more than enough.

      Ingredients I simply use 1/3 of each, melt/mix together and put in fridge.
      Almond butter + chocolate ends up being like a fudge. Very pleasant to eat. The mixed nuts adds the crunch.
      Oh - this is Dirt Cheap to make. One such bar might have 4g of carbs total, depending on size of the homemade bar, most of it from the chocolate. Lindt 70% chocolate bars being my preferred.
      You can also buy at supermarket 100% pure cacao for baking, mix in sweetener of choice and cacao butter to increase fat content.
      it's more work, I use my sous-vide setup to melt it together. 2/3 100% cooking cacao bar to 1/3 cacao butter, I like Erythritol for a no-carb sweetener.

Mixed nuts, I like the slightly roasted & salted, maybe 10$ a bag. This will make easily 20+ bars of a similar size to granola bars. The silicon mold I found on Amazon for 10$ or so.
      Also I just made a different version for desert. Frozen blueberries, 1/4 cup & tbsp of erythtritol for 2 min in microwave. Then about a small handful of 70% chocolate chunks (from Walmart) mixed in, a tbsp of almond butter, mixed, another 20s in microwave, mix again. Sometimes I add a tbsp of 35% cream.

    Hmmm... I don't know about the "organic" being marketing lingo. If I have the choice to buy produce with more or less pesticides, I'd choose the latter. Does it make it nutritionally more valuable? No. Does it introduce less of the harmful chemicals into your body? Yes. That would then result in a healthier product than using conventional sources for the same type of product.

    • @ghostderazgriz
      @ghostderazgriz Год назад +8

      It's very unlikely to harm you by any margin that would clinically be considered significant.
      You'll feel the impact of pesticides on the environment before you feel it in your stomach.
      Not marketing lingo, but not healthier by any meaningful amount either.
      Worse still however, organic food can be worse for the environment depending on the food. The land and resources needed to grow food organically can sometimes out weigh the damage of pesticides and chemicals due to deforestation, reduction of biodiversity, and more.
      It really is a mine field to shop with good intentions, but that's because the industry isn't built to protect the planet.

      @@ghostderazgriz The harm is building up over long periods and due to the amount of food eaten in a human's lifetime, it's veeeeery difficult to identify the exact culprits, as we're exposed to all kinds of chemicals.
      I understand the impact on the industrialized approach as you described it. However, new forms of agriculture are developed (or old forms are re-discovered), where different plants are planted on the same field to create a symbiosis and increase biodiversity again, as you need no pesticides under ideal conditions. The idea is that every plant has its defense mechanisms, which aids their partner plants. At the same time, these plants may attract certain insects, that act as natural pesticide against other insects. The yield may take longer to increase to higher levels than those relying on pesticides, but after 3 or so years, the investment in this new form of agriculture pays off.

      @@Djellowman You would have had a fair chance to put your statement into perspective and you chose not to. So here's what I found: Yes, more organic pesticides are used, because they break down much faster and therefore not persist in the final product, unlike many of the synthetic counterparts.
      So yes, you're absolutely right about the amount of use. You're just missing the point of leftover pesticide in the final product. Well done!

      Organic foods also have pesticides, and in many cases those pesticides have a shorter record of use because they were invented more recently, so they're not necessarily any more or less safe.

    I don't have formal education, but I've heard that you can have higher or lower quality protein as well. High quality protein is found in things like meat, while soybeans are notorious for being lower grade protein. The US produces a lot of soybeans because they export a large amount to China (one of the largest importers). There, China uses it as a cheap feed crop for animals / protein source for the population.
    If you like non-animal proteins, that's fine, but I'll take a nice juicy hamburger over plant-based proteins any day!

      Many agricultural pests are bacteria or fongi, they aren't food for anyone. Crops like cereals which are the most genetically ingineered dont even need pollinisation to produce fruits. The only known effect of GMO on the ecosystem is on microflora near the root of the plant, which is not worse in comparison to pesticides or antibiotics used for animals.
