As a photography enthusiast who lives in NYC, the iPhone has been a revelation for street photography. Not only for it’s quality but for it’s stealthiness. Smartphones are ubiquitous in such a way as they literally become invisible compared to a bulkier mirrorless or dslr camera & lens setup. As the saying goes, the best camera is the one you have on you, and that makes the iPhone the best camera for street photography in my opinion. It is literally always in your pocket. The quality of the lenses & sensors are only going to keep getting better. Looking forward to the iphone 16 Pro getting the 48 mp sensor on the ultra wide lens.
Spot on analysis of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, great video and super images, thank you. I upgraded from the 12PM to the 15PM because of the unique way Apple have allowed you as the photographer to make use of the main sensor with native 24mm, plus crops at 28,35 and 50mm. The crop files are really usable, especially from PRORAW images. Apple is doing something very clever to produce 24 megapixel images that retain detail. I have experimented with each crop blown up to 100% and the detail is amazing at 28, 35 but falls off at 50mm where the image is back to 12MP. The 5x 120mm is really useful but shows the limit of the 12MP sensor when there is smaller subjects in the frame. If you fill the frame I have found the image looks much better. If Apple adds an improved / larger tele lens sensor in the iPhone 16, they will be producing a phone that could replace my full frame cameras in many scenarios.
Got the iPhone 15 pro last week, using a Freewell Mist Filter with it, influenced by your iPhone 14 pro Video where you added a Mist Filter. Love that combo.
I just got the 15 Pro Max last week. It is pretty damn amazing. It's hard to compare it to my Sony A7RV with G Master lenses, but for a phone in my pocket like you say... crazy good and accessible
Brilliant video and have subscribed - just an amateur photographer but old enough (ancient enough) that I started on box brownies and have now moved from Apple 12PM to the 15PM! I'm an engineer and my tip is to always open up the settings area on your new phone and read enough/view enough videos to understand what each setting does. That has worked for me until I saw this video and realised that there is a LOT more to learn - thank you for starting me on a whole new journey (presets here I come).
I have to say... your shots look amazing mostly because of your composition though. Amazing shots man. But im also blown away by the 15 pro max. My DSLR is collecting dust right now since i got it. Only time i take it out is if im taking night photos.
Enjoy the channel and thanks for this review. Agree on the overexposure issue - I have mine locked in at -0.7 exp as the baseline and set it to preserve that exposure setting always, so that I can do a little less dragging down for each shot.
Nice video as always. What do you think about 15 pro vs that Oppo foldable phone you tested a month ago? Also, it'd be great if you can test the pro Sony Xperia phones.
I loved your take about the pro max! Did you feel you used the 5x telephoto alot ? or did you prefer taking photos with the other lenses more ? I am thorn between getting the pro vs pro max, specially knowing that you will be losing the 77mm (3x) zoom with the pro max. Also the quality difference of photo taken at the 3x between the the pro vs pro max is huge compared to that of 5x. Would love to hear your take about this matter as a photographer.
Same here, some say 3x better but I really like the 5x Also my other reason why I kinda want to get the pro max is the insane battery on pro max But I dont like the size of pro max Im confused
Hey Evan, love your work. Need some help with starting a RUclips channel - primarily lighting. Could you do breakdown videos on cinematic lighting used by RUclipsrs? I’m thinking Oliur, life of Riza, Peter McKinnon, other photographer RUclipsrs? And just basic lighting techniques?
It’s pretty easy really, most RUclipsr just use an apature 120d with a large diffuser. It spreads out the light nicely and looks professional. Key lights on the back to help separate you from the background are good too. Something like a window or in my case I sometimes use the colored lights
Thanks for this. Very interesting points. One question: how long is that delay between RAW shots you mention? That would be a big consideration but I haven’t seen detailed info anywhere. Cheers
Hi Evan, nice video! thank you! about "the problem" in the last section, i think you can do bursts of photos, just holding down the button and moving it to the left. So in this way you don´t miss any moment.
Hi. Im a professional barber and i need your advise for photos please. Which settings should i use for best quality photos, i want to see everydetail. Should i go for prorawmax48mp or jpeg48max, the editing is minimal but i need to see every small detail and strand of hair.
Apologies for the off-topic question...but I really like that vertical LED light over your left shoulder, may I please ask the brand/model? As for the video, thank you for helping rationalize the cost of my pro max, I love photography, but just on the iPhone. Its odd, but it just goes a long way to over pay for a phone and not having to upgrade cameras, too. BTW, my first vid, and subscribed...and your talking to all the photographers in a wide spectrum of experience and application is appreciated. Translated, that means I'm 10 mins outta a Kodak 110! 🤣
Thanks. but the main problem with your "problem" section is user error. You are using the default camera app which is the same as using your DSLR/mirrorless camera in Auto mode. I doubt you shoot in Auto mode, so why would you do it with your iPhone? Use an app like Halide which gives you full manual controls, focus peaking, focus assist, depth mode and lots of other useful tools. No professional photographer should be using the default camera app on their iPhone unless they are just taking random snapshots.
Its literally less fun shooting with a phone. Quality wise I get it but I just wouldn't do it. I love the feel of a proper camera. I feel its a part of the art.
I get that, I imagine the same was said when acrylic paints were introduced to artists over oils or power tools in to sculpting.. at the end of the day they’re tools. Never the less, I agree, I’ve tried shooting with my iPhone and it just doesn’t satisfy me the same way. Lol
Curious about the improvements from the 13 (what I have) to 15. I have found my self using my phone more for low angles than anything else. It sometimes s better simply because of the size of the phone v the size of the camera.
If you mean the Pro or Pro Max, the there’s the higher res raw images with 24mp files available. Add in the different focal lengths and the 5 x zoom on the Max. I also find the colours more accurate on the new main sensor.
I never upgraded from the 13 to 14 as my daily phone. So I am very familiar, I’d say this is a big step up. I never really used raw on my 13 pro but with the 15 I find myself using it a lot more because the quality feels more relatable. The 14 compared to the 15 however I wouldn’t say is a big enough difference to upgrade. In my opinion
@@RanftEvan I know what you mean. I don’t want to drop this phone. Whatever you do, don’t buy the Apple fine woven cases. They are terrible and after a month of use, they look a year old. When I’m on a shoot and think I might use my phone I use a Mous Limitless case. They give your phone tank like qualities.
Good for you! No need to gatekeep though, it takes time to find a style especially for newer photographers, Evans presets give a lot more creative freedom than the rubbish you usually get churned out by preset creators.
As you said, "it's for masses". Physics is physics. Apple is good at marketing. Who got a real camera, knows what's going on, and will never compare a phone sensor to the bigger sensors. Phones reaches the limit. 1" is the max they can put to the phone, and then.. It's the end. There will never be a M43 sensor in the phone. So they need to play around 1" with interchangeable lenses made for phones. I think THEY PLAN to do that but... It's not gonna be so soon because they will ruin a phone market instantly with that move. Coming to beggining "masses" would play around the first manufacturer who will release 1" sensor with mount for phone lenses. There is a reason why Xiaomi stopped this process.
Let me know if there are any other iPhone videos you'd like me to make. One that comes to mind is a night photography test...
Yes, a night photography test, and also would like to see you test the xiaomi 13 ultra
I'd lbe happy if you can test Sony Xperia 1 V, Samsung S23 Ultra, Pixel 8 pro and the upcoming OnePlus 12.
Yes more please ❤ and also more iPhone presets edits
And more preset formulas ❤
The problem in this video is not an issue in iOS 17. There's a function called Preserve Settings in the Camera settings.

One of my favourite travel photos I made was with an iPhone 6, converted to black and white.
Exactly! Best camera is the one you have!
Those old iPhone photos are very cool looking. I still have the 4s for photos
Can you do a video comparison of the iPhone 15 Pro Max vs the Oppo Find N3?
Do you have a video explaining the settings you use?
Nice. I wonder how it would handle night street photography with moving subjects. Any camera does well in daylight.

Loved your breakdown of this dude - big fan of the 15 Pro Max, it’s nice to have in my pocket as a companion to my main camera for sure
You can actually set the ev comp to a value like -1.0 stop and have it stay put.

Love this video, I’m new to this… do your presets only work with Apple photos? Would they translate to my Canon m50?
You can lock your settings so it remembers. Go deep in settings.
Lovely! Would love to see you do phone log 👀
Great video. Have you used apps as Camera+ or any other one to better control exposure and ISO?
awesome, exactly what I need to know. thanks for sharing
I love you channel!! What is your all time favorite smart phone for photography?
What's your camera settings, is it high efficiency or most compatible?
Been waiting for this video 🔥🔥🔥
I hope you can do the same thing with the DJI Pocket 3

Hello
What is your Leica camera model ?
Bought the presets!
This timing lag can be corrected in a software update (or is it one and done/hardware, sorry)?
Xiaomi ultra vs this?
Good content as always.
Thank you!
Why working with presets and show them like iphone pics? I don get it. Shoot with the phone and show that result
review sony xperia cam

I didn’t, just hit the button as fast as I could haha
