The squads not going after the Forgotten Beast was probably due to the smoke/fire, flaming tiles are impassible, and the game does not like pathing through smoke.
If you make hallways not one tile wide you will have much better fps. Still, not a lot that can be done about the temp calcs of the caverns burning down.

Currently running a metropolis fort, my goal right now is to get some holdings so that i can send the less specialized dwarves away and get some of my precious frames back
For context it appears that no matter how big or small your starting civ is, you don't get immigrants for several seasons after the first two guaranteed waves. I deliberately made sure to pick a dwarven civ with 6k+ pop and set up my place right next to them and still I didn't get immigrants for several seasons. It might be a bug or oversight in how your fortress' wealth is calculated.

Really like these story-driven series, very captivating. Also, how do you put individual items in a desired spot or chest? I didn't know you could do that
killing nobles hasn't been relevant for a few versions now. It just destroys the stress-relief that shouting at nobles provides and leads to fort collapse
from what I've seen it seems to run better on other people's systems so I'm not too sure - but I plan on reducing my embark to a 3x3 and limiting the pop to 100 and I think that should be good for me
Had with with a church, set them up kitted them out. Immigrants came, a big wave of them, doubled my pop just about. Guess what they asked for? Mhm, yeah another church. So I had to kit them out too. Well, I was cheering my little dudes along until the nobility started rolling in. And, my top dude, my head of state and of church started getting a little reachy. A crafts dwarf was accused of order of production violation against the head. No punishment. But my first death at a hundred pop was an open murder of a dwarf in the tavern. No one spoke rumors about that execution in the tavern below the church. The Roc was easily dealt with the well militarized squads, but the church's military leader was hurt. Out of 20 spear dwarves, I only could have imagined this 'hunting accident' or their boldness making them slip.

I'm just too lazy to build a pc and too tight to pay for a prebuild. Correction a centrino 2 xD
I think the nobles are a bit of a bitch, would like the idea that you don't have them but the dwarves in the society can issue demanda and requests. Like how's about they request building a swimming pool, they have a small chance to die but it lvls their swimming somthey have greater chances to survive accidents, or even weight training rooms, maybe museum and you have to hunt for relics for it.
