So I just got an email back from Printify customer support as I have been chatting with them. They said that Etsy does indeed collect ALL the sales tax for every sale no matter where they are located. They also confirmed with me that if I am strickly using Etsy or Ebay to sell my POD items on, and Printify and their partners to print the product and ship it as long as the order is getting uploaded from Etsy to Printify that we as the seller will not be charged sales tax unless it is a manual order such as a smaple order. They are saying that as long as we are doing it that way that we do not need any resale ST-3 certificate or sales permit. So as long as they gave me all the correct info we as the seller do not even need to worry about anything related to sales tax at all. Right? As long as we are ONLY USINF ETSY TO SELL ON. I hope this helps new sellers that are strickly planning on only selling on Etsy or Ebay and using Printify for fulfillment of the items. Just know that times do change and things can change in the future and so you should always double check with etsy and prinitfy as time goes by. I am not an accountant or anything but this came direct from Printify CS.
Hey Brian! We’re glad our support team was able to straighten this out. Yes, online marketplaces should collect and remit sales tax on behalf of sellers, but keep in mind this is only for sales within the US. Since we are not certified tax professionals, it’s always worth checking with one for your specific business needs. We agree that there’s a lot of information out there regarding the subject and it can be difficult to find. We’ll do our best to make this info more accessible. We appreciate your feedback and thank your for sharing with other new merchants.
@@Printify Well I did check with my accountant and he confirms with me that Etsy collects sales tax for the entire United States, all of the Canadian VAT taxes, and the European taxes. So it seems as far as Etsy goes there's nothing for sellers to collect. Now as far as being tax exempt with printify as long as the order is uploaded through Etsy printify should not be charging sellers tax on anything regardless of where the order is correct? Again except for manual orders such as sample orders.
@@brian8431 Hey Brian! If you sell items in the US through Etsy, then you are exempt, as items are resold. In the rest of the world, tax is charged in each step of the transaction. There is no such thing as tax exemption in Canada and the EU, but you can reclaim that tax later through tax returns. Even though Etsy collects taxes, we are still obliged by law to charge tax to the merchant for sales outside of the US, just as Printify pays taxes to print providers. As we are not tax professionals, please use this information as needed to correctly handle taxes regarding your specific needs.
@@Printify So you are basically saying that on orders in Canada and the Eu that Printify will be charging me tax no matter what, even if the orders get uploaded through Etsy? And what about a tax exempt cert? If i send one in would that help anything with the Canada and EU sales tax that you are syaing that I have to pay?
@@brian8431 Hi! Correct. Printify must, by law, charge tax on orders in Canada and the EU, even if the orders come through Etsy. Tax exemption is only applicable for the US. We're not certified tax experts, but we hope this information helps!
Im from Africa and only selling in the USA using Etsy as my platform. On Etsy I'm paying the taxes and must pay tax for printify as wel. So my question is, as a non US citizen living outside of the US can i apply for taxes to get a return, because paying taxes to printify, Etsy and then still pay tax in my country on profit made and not getting anything back seems like a lose lose situation.
Hi there! We would recommend contacting a tax consultant regarding this question. Unfortunately there are too many variables to consider and we are not tax professionals.
So I'm curious if printify is the one collecting all the taxes then printify would be the ones responsible to pay out those taxes to the proper states, providences or whatever correct? Or are we as the business owner responsible to pay that out? And then how do we know where to send the payments and how much to send? I think I need another video that teaches us exactly what our responsibilities are. This video was great giving the basic breakdown of each country and all that but I'm still confused a bit.
Hi there, Brian! Printify only collects and remits taxes that we are required to, which is any sale from us to you, the merchant. We remit to the state, country, or province depending on where the order is going (US, EU, AU, NZ, or elsewhere). You as the merchant charge tax to the final customer and are responsible for collecting and remitting that tax from the final customer - that is not Printify’s responsibility. We’ve got lots of articles in our help center about taxes as well, which you may find helpful. :) help.printify.com/hc/en-us/categories/4471600571153-Payments-Billing-Taxes How much you specifically need to pay and who you need to send the tax to varies from state to state and by country, and there are a lot of different factors to take into consideration, so we highly recommend consulting with a tax professional for your specific business.

@@scarlydesigns Hey there, yeah it seems like they make these things so confusing on purpose. But I know it just seems that way, if nobody's fault really except for the government because everybody needs to get their hands on a little bit of our money right. Lol I just wish that Etsy and printify right at the very top of their tax sections would specifically say something like what I wrote above about if you are only using Etsy and printify to start with then there is nothing that you need to do because Etsy collection remits all the sales tax no matter where it goes and with printify your automatically tax exempt as long as the orders come through the Etsy platform unless it's a manual order like a sample. I just think it would save people so much time right? But anyway I'm finally designing after spending two weeks on that. And you know I understand that when we do upgrade to sell on Amazon or even our own website that we are then responsible for all the taxes but it seems for now like we're safe, how are you doing with your store? It sounds like you're just getting started as well? Okay so everyday I understand this a little bit better but it is still so confusing. So how does it work if we are a sole proprietor But want to be tax exempt from printify taxes? Can we do that being a sole proprietor or do we need to get a LLC or S Corp? And if it is possible what is it that we need to do? I live in New Jersey in the United States and I somewhat understand it's all about where you have Nexus also So if I'm in New Jersey, I plan on only using Etsy for selling right now, but then at the same time you all have different print providers such as monster who is out of Florida so does that give me Nexus in Florida or no? But I really need to know being a sole proprietor how do I apply or get a sales permit or tax exempt certificate or do I need both? We really need a better step-by-step. I understand that there can be thousands of scenarios but there should be a few basic mostly used ones for US sellers at least that you all could maybe do some videos on. It would be really nice if somebody one day could create an Excel spreadsheet that shows okay if you live in this state in the US and you have a sole proprietor or an LLC then you have to do XYZ to be tax-exempt from printify and if you live in this state and you use monster digital that gives you Nexus and you need to fill out XYZ for that state and so on. This is so confusing please help.

Good day, thank you for the video. As far as I understand, the UK shouldnt need a VAT number unless the business exceeds 85k a in revenue, is it possible to use printify without said VAT number?
Hi Daniel! Correct, we do not require a VAT number to use Printify. Printify is, however, legally required to collect VAT for any transactions happening within the EU. For example, if you decide to use a print provider located in the EU. But, since we're not certified tax professionals, we recommend consulting with one for your specific business when it comes to deciding whether to register for a VAT ID or not. 🙂
Hi there! We suggest consulting with a local tax professional since laws vary so much from place to place, and as we aren't certified tax experts, we wouldn't want to give any false information!
Hi! The steps may be different depending on what country you're located in. We recommend doing a simple Google search "How to get a tax ID number in [country]". Hope this helps!
Today I found out I have to register as VAT-EU in the EU because I BUY listings on Etsy. Then I saw I have to pay additional VAT on these fees each month even if Etsy says they dont collect VAT on the fees if I have my VAT-EU number. It is crazy because in my country I dont have to pay any VAT unless I made 200.000 per year but somehow VAT-EU makes me pay VAT on the fees anyway
So if I am from Europe and I want to sell to the US, do I need to provide the VAT ID? How do I even get that? Do I need to have a LLC to even have a VAT Number and start selling with printify?

i am from India and working on Shopify with USA virtual address as default so do we need to collect tax from costumers of different countries although I don't have a physical location and economic nexus
Thank you for this video and I understand that Printify is not qualified for formal tax advice but I have tried searching the answer to my question but I still can not figure it out. I am based in the UK with my online store that I want to connect to Printify, but I only want to sell to US customers. Does anyone know whether I still have to collect sales tax from the customers or are they responsible for the sales tax on each order? Thanks, Rahul.
Hi Rahul. Thanks for your question. Taxes are definitely a tricky subject! Printify is obligated to charge sales tax on any orders within the US unless a seller has submitted a valid resale certificate. You should check if you have sales tax nexus within the US, and then you can apply for a sales tax permit and submit a resale certificate. If you don't have nexus, this is where Printify will charge sales tax on the orders shipped to states where Printify is registered (no action is needed from your end, but we would then recommend raising the prices of your products to absorb the sales tax that will be charged on the Printify side). Our help center article here help.printify.com/hc/en-us/articles/4483601178897-Does-sales-tax-apply-to-me- explains in more detail about nexus and how you can check if/where you might have it. As you mentioned, we're not professional tax advisors, so we still recommend consulting with one for your specific needs. Hope this helps, and let us know if we can help further. :)
@@Printify Thank you so much for your indepth reply. As I am based in the UK it is a slight issue trying to ring the US to find things out. I have found out that each state has set it's own sales nexus. As in the UK unless you earn £85000 in the financial year you can not charge VAT on orders. I am under the impression that this is the same for sales tax. Therefore I am going to add a disclaimer to my website that the customer is responsible for sales tax on orders. I will not be charging sales tax. Until I reach the threshold for each state. I will just have to keep records of everything. I will connect Printify on this basis. I want to do a pre order drop on the first set of products. Hopefully this is the correct thing to do. Thanks.

Hi, thanks for your questions- taxes are tricky! 1. Printify is obligated to collect sales tax from all of its customers (you) if a resale certificate hasn't been submitted. In your store, you as the seller are responsible for collecting tax from your customers. In other words, we don't collect tax from your customers, we collect it from you. 2. It's not completely necessary, but it depends on where your buyers and suppliers are. This video at 15.22 talks about this a bit more ruclips.net/video/_Vbty774Bxg/видео.html&lc=UgxL3Hdk0EwbndbUj6d4AaABAg&ab_channel=Printify . @@Printify OK, but for Etsy shops, Etsy collects and remits sales tax from our customers on our behalf. Hey there, The tax you charge your customer and the tax that you pay us are two separate things. That is, the tax you collect and remit are from sales between you and your final customer. The tax you pay us is for the sale between Printify and you. If you submit a resale certificate to Printify, then you'll be exempt from the tax we charge based on the fact that everything you buy from us is resold. So you'll be exempt from paying tax to Printify, but you'll still have to collect and remit tax from your final customer. I have wasted 2 weeks of time researching all this sales tax stuff and it finally came down to I dont have to do anything regarging sales taxes until I grow and create my own website or start selling my POD products somewhwere else besides Etsy or Ebay, It really did not have to be this complicated. lol.
:) help.printify.com/hc/en-us/categories/4471600571153-Payments-Billing-Taxes
How much you specifically need to pay and who you need to send the tax to varies from state to state and by country, and there are a lot of different factors to take into consideration, so we highly recommend consulting with a tax professional for your specific business.

Does anyone know whether I still have to collect sales tax from the customers or are they responsible for the sales tax on each order?

@@Printify Thank you so much for your indepth reply. As I am based in the UK it is a slight issue trying to ring the US to find things out. I have found out that each state has set it's own sales nexus.

I am under the impression that this is the same for sales tax. Therefore I am going to add a disclaimer to my website that the customer is responsible for sales tax on orders.
I will not be charging sales tax. Until I reach the threshold for each state. I will just have to keep records of everything.

For a more detailed explanation, we suggest contacting a professional tax advisor, as they'll be able to explain how it works at each step of the transaction. 🙂

If you're unsure about these things, we recommend reaching out to a tax professional :).
