    Hello! So even if Amazon is remitting sales tax for a certain state, we still have to file correct? But how do we file without paying? Also, I have amazon and I have Shopify. What if I have sales from North Carolina (where I have nexus) in Amazon AND Shopify. How would I file if I do not have to remit the sales tax for Amazon but I have to remit for Shopify orders for the same state?

    • @LedgerGurus
      @LedgerGurus  3 года назад

      You can file a $0 return.
      If you have nexus in state A and you sell to state A via both Amazon and Shopify, you would register with state A first, and then turn on tax settings on both Shopify and Amazon (if it's not one of the grey states). And on your tax returns, you would report either both Amazon and Shopify sales and take a deduction for the Amazon sales (that Amazon is collecting and remitting) or only report Shopify sales depending on the state.

    Amazing video! Thank you for tackling such an easily overwhelming subject. As a Canadian, selling to the US and eventually filing in the US for Sales Tax, I'm concerned that TaxJar can only offer filing services to customers with a US-based bank account. Is this the case for all 3 tax apps? And do you know if having a US dollar account in Canada is accepted. I wrote to Taxjar support... but, of course, got no response! lol !

    • @LedgerGurus
      @LedgerGurus  3 года назад

      Sorry for the delay. We've been working on getting your the right answer to your question. The reason they ask for a US based bank account is for payment purposes, they usually use that information to make payment to the states through ACH. Most states also allow the option of payment through credit cards, but most states also ask if the funds are coming from out of the country as part of the payment process. I know for sure to setup TaxJar and Taxify you need to enter in US bank account information, but Avalara might have some flexibility.

    My business only has nexus in California. However, it appears that Amazon collects sales tax based on THEIR nexus, not mine. Then they add it to MY gross sales. This practice seems highly suspect. In any case, when filling out the CA sales tax return, I'm confused about 1) What to put as total gross sales since all are not CA sales 2) What line on the form do I deduct the sales tax that was collected and paid by Amazon to zero out any tax owed? Any help you can provide would be so appreciated.

    • @LedgerGurus
      @LedgerGurus  2 года назад +1

      About California filing: California wants you to report all your sales (to customers in ca and other states) on gross sales’ line, then the next page you can deduct your sales into other states as “interstate commerce” (or something like that), then deduct sales to CA collected and remitted by amazon as “other- marketplace sale” (you will need to select other, then type marketplace, then put Amazon on there). So then your tax liability will be zero.

    I'va just startedy business and really dont understand all this tax thing. When I try to set up collect taxes, I see only my state, does that mean I cant collect it with my EIN from other states? I talked to the accountants, everyone says you have to collect all taxes. But how? Then there is threshold, which is also confusing. I know this video is not about that, maybe you have one about taxes set up. Thank you!

      Digital products' sales tax taxability is very overwhelming, I totally understand. The first question I would ask before stressing yourself out about how to pay taxes around the world is where do you have nexus (an obligation to file), ask yourself about your physical and economic nexus and then layer in the taxability part to get the exposure amount. After you know how many states you actually need to register and file in, we can look at which app works best!
      For more information about sales tax and nexus, we encourage you to download our PDF "10 Steps toe Ensure Sales Tax Doesn't Burn Down Your eCommerce Business." If you have an eCommerce business you are out there on the world wide web for anyone to buy your product. Anyone, anywhere in the US can potentially buy your product. If you must register in every state that collects sales tax, that would mean you would need to register in all those states before your business gets started even though you do not know who is going to buy? Am I missing something somewhere? that is daunting task if you do not know where your sales are going to come from.
