A skilled friend and I had to dismantle the tender before we could get access to the coupler. We didn't replace it but despite our care probably damaged something when putting it together again. A major design flaw is the inseparability of loco and tender !! There is literally NO room for error and many parts (like the front steps of the tender) are extremely delicate ! But mine seems to be working fine again ..... but still have to find out though :-) Thanks also for your great video. Love it !
Hi many thanks....this model is the king of my collection its off the layout at the moment on a display shelf ..my wife still doesn't know about it...lol
Hi Jim, many thanks for your reply to my questions regarding The Big boy, and the heads up on the other supplier in Germany. I'll check that out later. As I'm waiting for a MTH to ship their latest Big boy offering that I've had on order for quite a while now. But, your review as also wetted my appetite to check out the Trix one, and I may well get one at some stage, although it would be in it's all new glory paint job..! So, thanks again your time is very much appreciated. Terry.
Hi, many thanks, yes it is compatible with roco track as this model does not have the u.s rp 25 wheel sets, also you should not have any problems with the roco lokmaus 2 as it is a standard dcc controler...jim
Beautiful loco buddy! The original Rivarossi's are good but quite old by now & this later Trix one has to be far better. I'm still quite happy though with both my old Rivarossi ones! Great vid, enjoyed & liked & looking forward to seeing her on your layout. Cheers, John.
I've seen 4017 in the National Railroad Museum, Green Bay, Wisconsin and 4023 at Kenefick Park, Omaha, Nebraska. Beautiful machines. Built to do a job. A liitle on the awkward side, but they worked. Nice model. Not sure I like the American radio chatter. I guess that was what it was. I do like the sound of those American steam whistles. I like the British too mind you. Lovely, simply lovely.
You have a wonderful collection Jim. My grandparents neighbor has a wonderful collection of unused Roco and Marklin steam, Diesel, and electric locomotives I am trying to get on ebay for sale. I think roco runs on DC track.
Yeah, its UP 4014 in Pomona, California. Not too far from my house actually. I went by there a week ago and the UP Steam crew has been there taking apart the driving rods to check the bearings and grease it up for the move. Should be taken to Cheyenne, Wyoming for the rebuild in a month or so.
many thanks ,extream care is allways needed but like you say sometimes parts break i have a supplyer in the u.k that is good at locating parts with a number ref: also i use ebay of germany as there many specialist supplyers for roco fleischmann marklin trix electrotrian etc. i have never had any problems ordering even thow i do not speak german.....jim
I do like this model, trix have launched a factory weathered version aswell a few monthe back, i have another similar 2-8-8-2 loco from roco u.s collection which i fitted lok sound four and a base reflex spraker to which sounds & looks amazing when these two big beasts run at the same time on the system..
Thanks Jim, I was just checking out the supplier in Germany you mentioned earlier, and he does have the best price in the E.U. So, I just need to make up my mind if I want Two Big boys, or I want 'Two Big boys'..! 'lol' :-) But that loco you've got there is stunning..! And although I prefer the new look paint finish, I would consider the slightly weathered M22062 #4014..! This one is being refurbished to running order by U.P in the U.S at this very time. Thanks for the great review Jim
Ive had no problems with this model , but i do all the strip downs & decoder install & programing so if it breaks its not a big deal, i know what you mean as when i got mine it was a day or two before i unbolted it from the plinth...
This loco is awesome and awful at the same time ! It is no doubt a gem like no other but it can also be a big worry if things go wrong. I have the 4015 with Sound and smokegenerator. It just came back from Holland for a major repair, had its tendercoupler replaced, and also its faulty decoder replaced by a much better one plus a separate one for the smokegenerator. It has been cleaned thorougly and looks the part again. But I still haven't had the courage to detach it from its wooden plank !
It will handle a 360 radius curve as it has articulated wheel sets & standard wheel sets, the. U.s version would be a different case as it has rp 25 wheels..
I wish MTH have package their Big Boys the same way. It is kind of a pain to remove from the packaging without damaging it. Both handrails on the boiler broken off the walkway.. Also the model did not run properly from the start. Anyway I once had the Athearn Big Boy No. 4019 which was a nice model. I have since sold the model. Great Trix Big Boy BTW.
beautiful movie and beautiful locomotive. I would like to know the product code of the support with small wheels placed between the tracks and the locomotive, which allows you to do a complete test without the locomotive moving on the tracks. thank you
Has any new news came out with the restoration of Big Boy 4014 ? It is taking place in a roundhouse at the Cheyenne, Wyoming rail yard. Started moving it from Pomona, California 2014 and the scheduled date to be completed 2019. This information I listened to on the local news stations and news papers. For rail fans this will be BIG like... Like STAR WARS. Or if you are a sports fan, to see your favorite team win big. My interest is to just get an update.
Vat man , Customs, the wife , you got some secrets to keep Jim , They call them the Big Boy and I can see why , a beautiful model Jim , how will it cope on the curves ?
many thanks , my smart phone samsung galaxy s2 is what i use for photo ,vid, editing, uploading, i do not touch my p.c ...its so easy .downside is the frame rate on the vids is not as good as a stand alone camera....jim
Hi , yes peco code 100 nickel silver is the same dimensions as marklin trix track epcept marklin is three rail pickup..it will run fine . You can order from guage master u.k if you are in the u.k but with a huge price hike but you have pice of mind doing it that way. You can order direct from marklin-trix quoteing my model number , but i tracked down a even cheaper supplier on ebay germany ; johnvandamme , he even has the very limited run weathered version in stock now trix 22062. Jim
I bought this model from Märklin - three times. First one arrived, and the boggie with the wheels was loose and the screw missinng. Ordered a second. Pieces broken on the model. On number three there were scratches in paint, broken and missing parts. I returned all of them.
hovermotion Yes, factory sealed, bought directly from a serious Märklin dealer. And since the locomotive is attached to a wooeden baseplate, there is no way this could have happened during shipping. Must have happened before the model left the factory.

Do ALL the big drive wheels have wheel flanges? I thought I saw a pair without them which would explain how the locomotive could make certain turning radii...of track... thanks...
Hi, the model has euro flanges {not rp 25} on all wheels but the drive wheels have extra flex on eight drive wheels enabling running on curves as tight as 360 radius..
Hi, First of all, I really like your videos. Very clear and well done! Because of the above and the fact that you have a 22115 Trix Big Boy, I'd like to know. Do you know if a) it works fine with Roco tracks and most important b) if is it compatible with the roco lokmaus 2? Thank you very much, Kind regards
Hello, I’ve owned this model for over 10 years and it’s been in storage for a while. Today I opened it up and then foam actually melted onto the locomotive. Is there any type of product that will dissolve or get rid of the mess
Hi No way..was it in storage in an attic... You can try :"Goo gone" Goo Gone Pre-Cleaning Sticky Stuff Remover Adhesive Remover 8oz / 236ml of spray form. This product does not melt paint etc. But you will have to let it soak in. There may be a chance the paint may be stuck to the fome as the loco is all metal.. Be careful ...
does it have working smoke because i wanted to buy on based on the quality and condition of that beautiful engine i have been looking for one for the past 2 years and i have finally set my eyes on TRIX after watching this video and i was wondering how much does it cost because to have a beauty like that on my layout i wouldn't want any other train.
Hi there... Yes it has two smoke units but you have to buy them extra from marklin .I have not installed them yet they power up from the light number box..I paid £470.00 for this new from germany. .I did see a new one on ebay germany last week sell for £370.00 which was well below the list price...these latest models have gone up in value as they are very limited. They normally sell for around £600-700 and that price is worth every penny. ..also there is a weathered version without the smoke deflectors. ...jim
Hi, Two questions please. Would this Big boy run Ok on Peco code 100 track? And, how did you order the loco direct from the manufacturer in Germany? Many thanks.
I can't understand how they justify that price. The model is inaccurate,(smoke deflectors) and the sound is VERY poor and inaccurate. There should be 8 exhaust beats per wheel revolution, and that whistle is nothing like a Hancock 5 chime. Think I would rather have two Athearn Genesis Big Boys for that money!
yeah you are very correct. ..they never ran them with smoke deflectors. .this was an experiment based model with odd modifications. And regards to the sound it's not correct at tall but this is how they would sell more units with this treditional sound file for this model.. (I was thinking of up grading the sound file to the proper sound). The price for these models are worth every penny I think as they are built to a very high standard in German and will go up in value over the years.
+hovermotion they certainly do look to be well built, but are they any better than the competition? Obviously better than Rivarossi, but then you can pick one of those up at a fraction of the price. There are some excellent sound decoders on market now, the obvious choice being the Loksound. I have also been impressed with the TCS Wow Sound, check out a few reviews on youtube. I really like the way the exhaust note gets louder as the engine works harder, and then just rod clanking noises as load decreases...
+struck2soon Not sure about all the other big boy makes..this model has fully articulated drive wheels so it can take very sharp curves without ever derailing..these marklin trix models were made for the u.s market (rp25 wheels) and European market (euro wheel sets) . Have you seen one of these models in person ...they are impressive as they are around 90% metal and the detail is very good. .the best is hidden away and that's the drive system and motor it's flawless. Re : sound files that's exactly what I want on this model what you say......zimo or esu will probably be my choice custom programmed with the programmer and p.c.....in fact esu have re vamped the bigboy sound file to the prototype sound so that will be the one of choice. I will have to rip out the marklin decoder and fit a loksound v4.0 if possible.
A skilled friend and I had to dismantle the tender before we could get access to the coupler. We didn't replace it but despite our care probably damaged something when putting it together again. Bought mine a couple of weeks ago! The box showed its age but the locomotive is excellent. It was very thrilling to find one after all this time.
Cool....the model will last a 100years as its very well made...
@@hovermotion Indeed! These locomotives will outlive us for sure!
