Howard, before the concert, because it was sold-out, I was outside, waiting at the back door for David Garibaldi, the drummer for Tower of Power, to let me in. A limo pulled up and out stepped Ray Charles with a fine woman on each arm. As he passed he said, "good evening." I knew we were in for a very special evening.
I'm still trying to imagine what it must have been like -- We've just seen the Queen at her very best, wrecking the house, making us realize we'll never have another experience like this again . . . so she leaves the stage, doing the Holy Dance just like in church back home . . . and then, when we think it's over, she returns -- with RAY CHARLES!!!! I'm sure I'm not the only who would have thought I'd died and gone to Heaven . . .
I was 2 or 3 years old when this show was recorded. My dad was on tour and living in San Francisco. He used to play at the Fillmore during this time. When he would talk about that time and the amazing musicians he shared the stage with his eyes would light up and tears would start running down his face. I was fortunate to have seen heard and pent time with a lot of those same folks and their music effects me the same way. I miss and love you. Rip Charlie Reynolds or Dad to me.
OMG, I am in tears listening to this concert and remembering when I first heard this album! I was 12 years old and it just moved me!! I have never experienced anything like it in my life! The spirit was definitely operating that night, and all those who were moved that night will never forget that awesome experience! The Queen of Soul and the Granddad of Soul, Jazz and everything else, the one and only, Ray Charles! RIP Queen and Granddaddy of Soul and Jazz! Don't forget Billy Preston and King Curtiss were also a part of this band!! We will never experience such an impromptu and magnificent event like this again with these two giants! God bless you and RIP Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Billy Preston, and King Curtiss. 🙏🙏🙏😢😢😢
I was driving on the I10 freeway crossing on to California from Arizona when a radio station played this song in Tribute to the death of Aretha Franklin. I was caught up in the spirit so I exited the Freeway just outside of Blythe and took the time to just praise the Lord and have Church.
I was 19 and was there. The spirit was all thru my body and soul hearing Aretha Franklin sing. Icing on the cake when Ray Charles came out and sung with her. Couldn't wait to buy the album. R.I.P. QUEEN OF SOUL Aretha ❤️ ❤❤
Let the Church Bells ring 'round the world... The Queen has gone home. What an immeasurable blessing she was to us! Prayers of gratitude, and ease to her on her transition.
I agree. This and "Amazing Grace" are the only albums I listen to while I shave my head. Been a ritual for years. Not only HER best albums but two of HISTORY'S best albums...hand down.
I was nine years old---I'm 43 now---when my mother's male companion at the time ordered me into one of our bed rooms with the lights out at night for a punishment. I was so afraid of the dark back then. I didn't know how I was going to make it through. I curled into a ball. Within five minutes of being afraid this song was played loud enough for me to clearly hear it from our living room. I grew up in the church, so I interpreted this song as getting the Holy Spirit in the dark. It was so timely and it really 'comforted' me. I was no longer afraid that night in that dark room with the door closed thanks to this song. I believe God had that song play at just the right time. "The Lord will command His loving kindness in the day time, And in the 'night' His song shall be with me-- a prayer to Go's of my life" (Psalms 42:8).
Just need to share with y'all Aretha is my favorite female artist since I was a child! Being a singer myself she's who I always looked at as a roll model if you will singing wise. I never wanted to sound like her I just desired her power and range and Thank God I've been blessed with that gift. I never met or knew her but I miss her like I've always known her. Thank God for her spirit& Her gift!🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏I'm so glad I got to see her perform twice!
There is the whole concert, I haven't watched it yet ~ enjoy one and all, and love and peace.Things were not perfect back then, god knows, at least we had this music...the talent, and someone like Bill Graham. Here in Boston we had "The Boston Tea Party", with the Staple Singers, Country Joe & The Fish, Richie Havens, a young Steve Windwood.. "Cloud" (band I was in, I thought we were "The Cloud", never did get Aretha or Ray, oh well I ain't complaining ; ) go and here live music at the venues around your area..there are some good ones, I will say here in Cambridge look up "The Cantab" I haven't been in awhile though I couldn't believe the Thursday Nights, jammed packed to hear and dance to the funkiest band in years that brought back the feeling of this concert. "The Chicken Slacks" and every night was great music, bluegrass on Tuesday, Diane Blue on Friday & Saturdays, a great blues singer and harmonica player, and the Sunday night open mic jams..whoa. It's right down the street from me, think I'll go when the weather gets a bit warmer and check it out again - i made some great friends there, on and off the stage. xoxo
Getting, spirited, in the dark, magnificent, great, and spiritual 🎵 soulful music song.like Sally walker, set into saucer, powerful soul.they don't make songs like that anymore, love you Aretha Franklin you are greatly appreciated and miss. Know one could ever take your place in my ❤️ ❤️ heart thankyou
All of you, rap, hip-hop and so called, R&B artists, watch and take note, of how it is done. No crusty boxers on display and no breasts and no booty hanging out. Just raw talent and plain old fashion class!!! That is all you need!!!
Oh man this live version is incredible. Poor audio and all. I thank God for giving the gift of Aretha Franklin to the world. As i sit here with tears rolling down my face i feel ok. My soul needed a jump start and i was lead to this song.
I played this recording almost daily upon its release and made me so many ways. I pray this live performance will be restored one day. It is joy to see the performance with recording.
Merci pour votre musique, votre âme ARETHA. Vous êtes la 1ere voix soûl que j'ai connu depuis que j'ai 8 ans sur un caillou appeler La réunion! Inn volkan d'énergie telle que vous! RIP.
Exactly !!!! its mentioned above why Ray's part is not there. They should show the whole video because this was awesome. Aretha, Ray, franklin all of them just killed it. I was upset when the video ends when Ray got started.
@@dhdgreat1760 well over to the right, there's a thumbnail pic, "Aretha Franklin Spirit In the Dark Continue"..I bet the whole concert is around this joint or somewhere on the internet. Meanwhile, gotta get something soon, so i can play albums - to my cassette tapes.. ; )
I was 19 years old and I was there. It's still the greatest concert I've attended.
What did u do when Ray started playing? This is one hell of a jam session!!!!

I totally agree with you….some of songs brought tears to my eyes.

You do know this song has nothing to do with religion right? It’s talking about sex.
@@pierrejohnson3991 No an Angel is a messenger of God or the devil. Aretha will be of God especially singing Amazing Grace.
Aretha’s voice is the urethra of the spirit.
Seriously one of those 'wish I'd been there' moments!

A truly historic document. Classic Aretha and the immortal Ray Charles. Bought the record when it came out, this is BETTER. That band whew.
Greatest duo of all time the king and queen doesn't get any better soul to the max
Imagine having a queen in a smaller, more intimate venues like this. Damn
Bill Graham's Fillmore at the Carousel Ballroom was not a small venue, but somehow, it was an intimate space. P.S. I was there.
I had no idea there was a video for this! Amazing
Goosebumps,
