Starter motors are a high-wear component that get a lot of hard use, making it a common item that will eventually need replacement. In this video, Charles shows how to properly replace the starter motor on a 2017 Husqvarna TX300, but these instructions will be very similar for other late model KTM and Husqvarna 2-stroke models.

Wowsers this is def a chore. good video. PS for ppl doing this the Bendix can be removed without removing the flywheel just gotta jossle it around a bit and it should come out and go back in without too much fuss.
Nearly 500 hours on my 2017 KTM250/300 XC. The starter finally went out on my bike a couple days before a BRUTAL enduro in RIchloam, Florida. Having to kick start the bike all day, definitely did not help my score. It is great to see all of this laid out and know what is ahead of me, including the process, tools needed and the torque specs all included. Rocky Mountain helps sponsor our Florida Trail Riders series and have provided great service to me over many seasons and two championships. Thank you folks.
What tools are being used to remove the collar on the starter from the shift side of the cases? I've tried using various picks, flat head screwdrivers, it appears so easy in the video, like they just pop right out, but after 500 hours, mine seem to be welded in!
What an amazing easy explanation!
You guys deserve to secceed and be number 1 on the market
Very helpful,I don’t need it this moment but your videos are amazing whatever topic your on.👍🏼
Thanks. Very helpful as always!!!
Not sure if the tolerances are different but the bendix on my '19 300 xcw comes out without having to remove the flywheel. The collar can be tough to remove but a bit of WD, big flat head and small hammer to tap it out from behind does work.
awesome explanation - keep them coming
Thank you, will do!
Do you need to bleed the clutch after disconnecting the slave?
Thanks for a great video. We followed these instructions to the letter and have the starter motor out. That bushing/collar was hard to get out though - picks didnt do it.
What did you use for the collar?
Praying my starter motor never fails. Jesus
With the proper regular replacement of the bendix bushes and lubrication it will most certainly last longer.
Such a great company
Can i replace the starter motor without taking the flywheel off?
Hello are you specialised in husqvarna dirtbikes i have a husqvarna cr125 build in 1998 what kind of cover set can i put on it and what build type is the maximum i want the 2020 cover set on it or the 2014 one
Hi guys, I have a ktm exc 250 Tpi 2018 model and the starter needs to be replaced. Can I still start a Tpi with just the kickstart ?
If you have a kickstarter on it lol
do you need to service these starter motors? re grease ect
Holy project. Just replace the crank while you’re at it.
The service manual always makes you do an excessive amount of extra work
My 2007 KTM 525 starter still going strong, and I would remove a starter from a 2-stroke lol
Looks like the old outside starter was a better idea😂
is there any other way of doing this or is this the only way?????
Unfortunately, the process shown in this video is the easiest way we know of to get this job done.
i just replaced mine left the motor in the frame, undid engine mounts jacked the motor pulled it out
Wow, now that's a pain to do.
I have replaced mine Real difficult , doing top end is much more easier , great ktm engineers did the best design for a part can fail just within 40 hours
Or go 500 hours before needing replacement.
I got 418 hours out of my starter before it died on a trip the the UP of Michigan glad I have a kick starter...saved the trip. What a pain in the ass to replace the starter. Guess I'll replace my original oil pump while im in there with easy access. (keep the old one for a spare).
Got to hand it to ktm to come out with stupid designs, like on my 24 bike need to remove fueltank to change a sparkplug!
Thers no real reason pulling the Flywheel out, you can get the Bendix out by wiggle it with the Flywheel in place.
can you install it without pulling the flywheel?
@@theelement8362 The bendix? Sure do
yes the bendix just falls out .
Can i replace my starter motor without having to take flywheel off?
@@shaunbean5553
To take off the Bendix you dont need to take the Flywheel off.
To take the Starter Motor out you need to pull out the whole engine out of the frame.
I saw two bolts on the starter. I thought this is gonna be a breeze. Wrong!
HEY FELLOW RIDERS how about someone making a video like he says at 1:10, just pull the motor mounts and lifting the engine only to get the starter out? Please put your video title in the comments. !!!!
try to remove a beta starter motor
Thank god my starter motor just bolts on the top of my engine ... 2 bolts and off
Mines gone.. fml
Thank goodness I don’t have a starter motor
my cousin spent a shit ton of money for a blown main fuse ill stick with kick start
"That's all there is to replacing the starter motor"... Ha!
RM site lists ZERO "dirt bike" Neutron Starters for ANY BIKE LATER THAN 2016!!!! Either the website is broken, or the tech in this video used a different brand starter! Seriously, go to Neutron starters via the link provided, choose "dirt bike" in the drop down menu, and select... 2016 or OLDER! C'mon, Rm, you know better than this.
Since this video came out, Neutron has discontinued that specific starter that fits those models. However, the process is still the same regardless of the starter brand that is used. Thanks.
why would you need to do a starter after only 3 years , sheesus . lol
Another reason to not buy a KTM or Husky. Good job though Charles.
