      I started watching anime in the mid 2010s and even I think the mid to late 2000s was the golden age of anime. Sh!t was great back then. Not every anime was a rip-off power fantasy of this one popular anime.

    2:55 thats not true?
    I mean that does happen but most anime songs are commissioned by the studio/producers making the anime to be made for the anime itself
    I think what joey meant to say is anime songs these days are not just an anime opening but also actual songs that you can listen to without any context or relation to the anime itself

    • @CatClan
      @CatClan 3 месяца назад

      It is, but it wasn't fully explained. In the 70s all the way to the 90s singing for Anime shows was seen with negative connotations for your career as an artist, so for the most part mainstream singers stayed away from the genre. It wasn't until the 90s that some mainstream bands stsrted to get involved, mostly because the record labels were owned by the same parent companies that were sponsoring the Anime series. After that it became more common for mainstream artist to be involved with the genre as Joey mentioned
      This is why in the 70s to the 90s you see so many songs sang by only Anisong singers that didnt went beyond the genre for their entire careers. Which you still have Anisong only singers I'm today's world as well, but is not the only artist that are singing every op/ed in existence.

    • @KingJH0510
      @KingJH0510 3 месяца назад

      @@CatClan yeah i get all of that
      But what joey was talking about is anime taking songs that have been released by artists and using it as an opening or ending. This doesnt happen very often and even when it does it happens in the form of covers.
      For example, all of takagi-san's endings are covers of songs from other artists. Recently, we had hananoi-kun who got the artist to sing a japanese version of her song for their ending
      There is also yofukashi no uta, but that one is a special case where the manga in itself was inspired by the song
      Anisongs, at least in recent years which i think takes up a majority of anime at this point, are commissioned specifically for the show

The problem is that when the Archangel crew is on screen, the writing takes a complete nosedive.

    I think anime songs today are still made specifically for the anime, the only difference is that labels realize they can also sell the songs as singles so they write the lyrics with a subtle reference to the anime. Anisong labels also exist now unlike before. These labels that work tightly with anime productions such as Sony (certain labels under Sony like Sacra Music), Pony Canyon, Kadokawa (idk the name of the label 😅) etc.Like, Creepy Nuts is already a popular rapper but he still does anisong... it's not just bc he is popular, he also just happened to be under Sony. 👍

    Hey, I was surprised about your takes on Hellsing old series opening (it was huge and everyone loves it and it's so cool too) and Aimer's Zankyou Sanka. I've found the Aimer's song and her MV first and instantly fell in love with the song and PV and even used it for my own game video, so touching and cool it was. And after found out that it's an opening for the KnY and enjoyed it there too. Great song. Also Chainsaw man opening is a really cool one too and it perfectly matches the anime's tone and director's work and sense of humour there. It's kinda interesting how I agree with you on almost all other takes but then these three really shocked me xD Yoasobi's song on the other hand is definitely not everyone's cup of tea so it's not a hot take, wasn't surprised, I kinda like it though.

  • @sheikahchic
    @sheikahchic 4 месяца назад +6

    There’s so many I’m shocked didn’t make it in there, like ANY Initial D opening, particularly Blazin’ Beat(personal bias), or YuGiOh!. Also super surprised to not see either of the Death Note openings, or the original FMA ops cause those were extremely popular when it was originally airing. Like Joey, I really wonder about the metric that was being used to measure. If it was by popularity or views, or even cultural impact, you’d expect to see History Maker from Yuri! ON ICE for 2016(not saying it would be right, or even my opinion, just it’s what I’d expect and not be surprised by), for example. I’m really surprised I didn’t see more sports anime openings, because whether you love or hate them, the songs and bands/musicians are usually awesome, and the visuals are also usually really well done with the music. I enjoy a lot of sports based anime, from Prince of Tennis and Slam Dunk, to Free!, Haikyu, and Kuroko no Basket. What is even more, jarring, is the lack of musical anime inclusion. When it comes down to it, whatever the “best anime openings” are on any scale is always an opinion. But this list really did seem kind of all over the place, as far as what metric it was trying to use. I’d be interested to know what this same list would look like if Joey curated it, himself.

    I agree with what you said about Chainsaw Man. Kick Back is a good song. Not fitting to be the OP of the show though. I still say the first ED, Chainsaw Blood by Vaundy, should've been the OP. As for Oshi no Ko, I love Idol. Fantastic OP so can't say I agree with you on it being annoying/bad. But the ED is better. Mephisto by Queen Bee is so slept on.
    Last thing I want to add, again, agree with you saying that a show's popularity explodes an OP's standing in these rankings even if they're not the best OP of that year. This year for example, Dangers in my Heart season 2's OP was amazing. Currently airing, Mysterious Disapperances is another one (Say what you will about the show, I know it has a 6.5 rating on Anilist, but the OP is so good). But that's just kind of how anime is. The majority of the time, the actual best of whatever category you want to look at are usually buried because they didn't hit mainstream appeal. And some people may argue that if it hits mainstream appeal, that means it was liked by most people and therefore deserve to be called the best, I think that's just a logical fallacy. Something can be objectively a masterpiece or incredible but just not be for everyone.

    12:00 - I will never forget how I first started reading OP and how I first heard this song.
    I started reading one piece to replace the emepty feeling I had after finishing Naruto manga. Since I wasn't involved in the anime community, I genuinely hadn't heard about it, and I literally just picked it up cause the vibe that the cover was giving off was perfect (idk if it was the cover for the first volume or a different one - but the first volume cover and it's remake after the time skip are still my faves).
    I still remember being completely and utterly enchanted by the first page of chapter 1, Gold Roger's execution. And falling heads over heels for the manga after finishing chapter 1. It just spoke to me, heart to heart. Naturally, as every arc topped the previous one for literally 800 something chapters, I was thinking all the while, "man I think I found an underground gem, this is definitely my personal favorite unpopular show". Lol.
    One day, as I was cleaning my house while listening to music, youtube randomly started playing We Are! - and you guys gotta remember that in the full version of the song, there's no "wealth fame power" speech - it's just music for like 30 something seconds for the start. And in those 30 second, having never ever seen the anime, and before getting to the part where they say the title in the lyrics, I just FELT it. I just KNEW this was the One Piece opening. The vibe was so strong that despite the incredible variety of possible songs that can exist - I was just thinking "isn't this One Piece? It has to be right?"
    Both the Japanese and English (not the rap - altho that's got its own charm) versions of this song are incredible, the vibe, the lyrics, what's going on on the screen - everything gave off the PERFECT one piece vibe that I got from reading. The English one is incredible btw if any of y'all haven't heard it!
    To this day, I think this opening is the most fitting opening to a show I've ever seen, really encapsulating the energy and vibe. Not to mention it's a fuking banger. Man I love One Piece.

Bandai don't own the rights to it and it meant after a certain period the song stopped being used in anything Zeta related anymore due to licensing.
    If I remember correctly I read the guy got annoyed with them asking for permission to use it and told them to stop asking him. It's annoying because it's an absolutely amazing song as well and both the openings and the ending song (all covers of his songs) are some of the best songs in Gundam.

    One of the negative points of living in Germany is that before streaming services it took quite a while before an anime made it to us. But at the same time that had the positive effect that I got to see 80s anime like Lupin and Cat's eye (which I really loved) on TV, otherwise I might have never seen them^^
    And wtf? DBZ came out in 89?! we didn't get it until 2001! Sailor Moon only took 3 years to arrive here xD
    As for openings in general, Germany was always great, because we ignored the often stupid english openings and just used the japanese with tailored German lyrics

      Except for Pokemon and Naruto (because of the distribution rights), because we thought: Oh yeah, let's make our own Naruto opening...

      I mean in terms of being well written Oshi no ko definitely is. No doubt about it. I personally dropped the manga because I was getting bored and I felt that the quality of the writing wasnt hooking me enough anymore. BUT. Thats just me. Its still a solid 8 to 9 out of 10 series.

      With the recent chapter, I think we (might) have made it out of the woods with how chaotic the last 20 or so chapters have been
