  • After a 500 mile break-in procedure, and oil change, the Diff is finally ready to be be pushed hard. I am so happy with it. Money well spent. Any performance car will benefit from a Locking Diff; especially big power RWD cars. I went for the M Performance clutch plated diff, however the other diffs on the market will have the same affect on the cars handling and performance.

    Very true Reg. Got one on mine - couldn’t wait for the snow - slow motion drifting at low speed was ace! Grip out of dry junctions is awesome. I surprised the poo out of an Audi R8 at a traffic light drag strip. Keep up the good work fella. Always watch any diff content so if you go on a track this year post an M140 ‘diff on track’ video!

    Keep working on those videos! You've got great potential of being a decent youtuber given how comfortable you are in front of the camera. Love the videos from outside the car of you drifting. A stationary camera inside the car + one showing your face and one showing the road would also help. Keep it up!

    Fully agree - did the same on my manual M140!
    Besides the suspension mod the diff is the most needed upgrade on these m-lites

      Debating whether to do B12 passive, B6 Adaptive or LSD. Did you find the suspension or lsd made more of a difference to the handling? I will eventually do both of these.

      @@derekporter66 Custom tune off pureboost de through MHD , guys name is Fabian that I dealt with you do need to do data logging but by the 9th map he emailed through to me it's superb 👌 I have done .major mods to the car the list is long and expensive Pureturbos stage 2 , upgrade hpfp, Forge intercooler and pipes, baffled sump, Mossellman oil thermostat, BCS 100 cell Cat - remus centre section- M performance rear silencer, etc etc etc , I have had the car five years now last dyno was at Whifbitz it showed 438 at the wheels 635nm torque.

    Great vid dude, very informative. I have just purchased a 335d and trying to purchase an lsd. I have contacted 3 different companies Wavetrack from Stoke on trent- 3 weeks later still not even got a price. Quaife from Liverpool 3 weeks later still no price. and M Performance from Leyland who has actually given me a price so I may go with the M Performance especially after your fantastic review.

    Ahh the sound of your Remus exhaust is making me regret going down the res delete route. Your exhaust note sounds so good, it’s a much better tone than the res delete. I wonder if I got a Remus backbox would it sound the same? I’m guessing the Remus midpipe isn’t too dissimilar to a res delete midpipe….

    What about endurance mountain driving ; that's what I do; taking sharp corners ; now that the back is too happy, would an LSD be appropriate for such driving? I notice that it works well on straight lines, but what if it rains as well? its more of a safty ask at this point:

    Great video... not sure on getting the power down lsd v four wheel driving having driven both and rallied an escort mk2 with quaife lsd four wheel drive definitely gets the power down better. That said getting a car sideways and controlling it doing donuts and generally having good fun in a car I'd rather have rear wheel drive and an lsd...

    Having had both PSS and PS4 tyres, the PSS are much better than in the dry due to the harder side wall.

      @@GodKing804 Hi, I own an M240i Xdrive F23 and the Michelin PSS are very bad in the rain. They like medium outside temperatures and dry roads. Probably try Goodyear Asymmetric if there's a lot of rain and some snow.

    Absolutely brilliant little video and very professionally done. I'm getting the M Performance LSD for my M240i next month. I'll be looking to get wheels and tyres too in the spring, as I want to fit 235 on the front and 265 at the rear. I'm running near 470WHP at the moment and there's no traction to really enjoy the power (my fault for doing the engine before the diff and wheels).
    The only thing I would say is that Quaife and Wavetrac like you mentioned aren't locking differentials like the Drexler (M Performance) diff. Both Quaife and Wavetrac are open diffs with a geared torque biasing system or ATB as it's called, where they switch power to the opposite wheel when a wheel begins to slip. However, they don't lock like a clutch or plated diff like the M Performance does. Most agree that the ATB diff like Quaife, Wavetrac, Blackline are better for road use. They're smoother, quieter, less aggressive, more predictable and have no maintenance issues. But they have limitations in their abilities of course.
    Quick question, but is your M140i tuned or standard? And how does the M Performance diff fair with the different driving modes? I know the E-LSD is still active with DSC-off, so I would imagine that kicks in still, but what do you find works best? And how well does the LSD work with the nannies in Traction and Sport Plus?

      I've got an M235 currently putting down about 430 and considering a diff. It's a big chunk of change, but worth it.
      Up until now, I've been locked on the m performance diff, though your comments on quaife and others have intrigued me. My goals are obviously the best traction I can get, but also predictability, the ability to have fun in the wet and snow, and most certainly safety. Knowing how to drive is obviously #1, but we've all seen the endless supply of mustang and Corvette videos existing a turn and planting themselves into oncoming traffic. They obviously don't go into it with an understanding of oversteer and overcorrection, but their LSD certainly aided them in losing control rather than keeping it..

      @@NJFPV Well I've a good few months of the M-Performance/Drexler LSD now on my M240i, and I've had chance to drive a M140i with a Quaife, so I'll pass on my experience so far as best as possible. Firstly, the best possible grip is with changing the wheels to accommodate the extra power of the tuning. The diff doesn't actually prevent the driver nannies from interfering in my experience unless you switch them off, but I'm running close to 470WHP and 670NM now, so mine breaks traction nearly as often as it did before, but in a much more predictable and balanced way. The car now feels much more planted and feels like a performance car should, no more loose wheels feeling even under gentle driving. There was something disconnected about how it handled with the open diff, it felt very 'nervous'. That has gone, as has the one wheel burn outs exiting roundabouts. The Quaife in comparison keeps a bit of that crazy loose feeling, and in a way makes the car feel less different from the standard open diff (as the Quaife is an open diff anyway). The difference is that the Quaife clearly and effortlessly does the job, you're just less aware it's doing it. My main reason to go with the M-Performance diff was the de-acceleration locking. It's only mild on de-acceleration, but you can definitely feel it. The car feels more stable under braking and it's definitely noticeable. That isn't present at all with the Quaife, but in some ways I actually like the way the Quaife keeps the car's almost frantic feeling while doing its duties.
      I haven't had chance to really push the M140i like I have with my M240i (as it wasn't mine to do that with) but some say the Quaife is the best option for road use, as it's a little more predictable and user friendly, and you don't need to do the run-in service at around 1200 miles. Where as the M-Performance is best for track use due to its ability to operate when the weight is off the real axle, It's unlikely you need that feature for road use unless you're literally driving like you stole it, which most normal human beings wouldn't be doing on public roads anyway. Obviously drifting you're much better suited to the M-Performance diff as well. I'm not a big fan of drifting mine, but it's nice to have that option for a bit of fun when it comes time to change the rear tyres. Hope this helps a bit.

      My M235 is new to me as I just got it about a month ago. I've already spent about $6k on FBO, tune, cosmetics (tint, carbon pieces), brakes, oil, plugs, coils, trans flush, etc., so considering a big purchase like a diff has been stressful. I think the rest of the work is all for naught if I don't address the big pink elephant in the room as far as performance.
      I suppose I have some thinking to do. I need to go one route or the other, and these seem like the contenders. I suppose I don't quite know enough about how quaife works to make an educated decision on which I should go with - I'll do a bit more digging to try to grasp the concept.

      @@NJFPV Same man. Our cars are really capable machines, but they should have come with an LSD as standard. I've spent roughly 15K on mine now with a full carbon kit, MMR springs, front and rear subframe bushes, (well worth thr spend by the way) de-cat, tune, diff, servicing etc. I think if you want the best all round option for your car, the Quaife ATB makes the most sense, but there's pros and cons of both as mentioned.
      Wheels are by far the biggest headache for me, as our cars don't have a lot of room for modification there, and we ideally need a lot more grip. The best I've found so far is a the Apex ARC 8 as they're really lightweight, reasonably affordable and can fit wider tyres. I'm going with 8.5J 45 offset fronts with 235/40/18 tyres and 5mm spacers, and 9.5J 58 offset rears with 265/35/18 tyres and 3mm spacers with Eagle F1s. I have to get the wheel alignment done first to dial maximum negative front and rear camber to prevent rubbing, and it's taken me ages to find this all the correct information! So if you're thinking Apex wheels at some point this might be helpful 👍🏻

      @@Niko-xz5lk ftw! 265's! That's nice man. Yes - wheels are on the list, but it's a little bit away at this point. I'm interested in how it works out for you though.
      Yeah, I've got an email into Quaife with some questions. I'm fairly certain you can purchase a built diff with a core charge and send them your old one. That's the route I'd be going, as this is my daily and I've got 3 kids and a job, so there's not a day that I don't have to drive at least somewhere. I can afford a day or 2 of downtime here or there, but not weeks.
      Yeah - the $$$ racks up rather quickly I'm beginning to understand. I suppose the order that I'm likely to do things is as follows (and I know this is not the most ideal or logical, but the time gaps in between may be large at times, so...) 1. Diff, 2. Wheels, 3. Turbo (+ new tune), 4. HPFP (+ new tune), 5. Suspension.
      I know, in an ideal world, suspension should've already been done, and it should probably be at #1 above, but it's a pricey one (like all the others I suppose), so it might have to wait a bit...

      I have it on the car now. Wow wow. What a different car it is! It’s feels now like a RWD 2.0 car, really is amplified that the car pushes you in straight line and shoves you around the corner!! You can really steer the car now with the throttle, very cool feeling. Also car invites so much more to take corners. It’s transformative🤩. Cheers mate!

    After a number of years I'm over my clutch type LSD because to jerky and noisy doing slow manoevering for a daily driver and only doing the really odd track day. Does what it's supposed to very well though. I'm switching over to a Wavetrack torsen style LSD soon as it's much more suitable for daily driving.

      I’ve been daily driving the 140 with the diff now, and it’s exactly the same as it was with the open diff Tony. You’ll notice no difference in comfort, NVH, etc. I’ve had a Quaife too.

    I do want one but are there any circumstances (assuming the nannies are turned on) where having an LSD can make the car less safe? IE can it lead to oversteer that the traction control can’t correct in time?

      Only if you turn the DCT off. Keep TC on unless it’s dry and warm and you’ll be fine :)

    Does the LSD improve the 0 to 60 time by much ? The Xdrive version is 0.2 secs faster but thats 90kg heavier.

    Nice video. Just bought a m135i, owner said it may have a lsd fitted by previous owners. Are there any easy way to tell by driving style to tell. I haven’t driven any m135i with or without so can’t even tell.

      Drive up to some mud/grass.. put your foot down.. with traction off. If the wheel on the grass/mud spins only, then you have an open diff. Either that, or jack it up and check both wheels freely spin at the same time

      Because this not a A/B comparison. This is my opinion on why you should upgrade your diff from open to LSD, on the M140i. Just like the title states.

    It’s a crime BMW didn’t offer LSD on these cars and 135, 335, etc. My cheap little Solstice GXP has an LSD from the factory. It’s a blast to drive and my right foot is the traction control when I want it to be.
    And because the welded them in the 135 manual you have even more issues/expenses to deal with.

      I don’t know the number off the top of my head unfortunately. It’s just the M performance diff for the M140i. Just need to make sure you state which transmission you have when ordering as the ratios are different 😎

      well that's not true, I know a few who have m2 and m3 cars and have drove my m140i with m4 lower control arms, under body bracing, bilstein dampers, lsd, spacers, toe/alignment setup, stage 2 remap, it's as good as the m cars

      £1800 fitted for quaife in Ossett, Yorkshire, installed while you wait. Quaife is definitely the one to get. No clutch, lifetime warranty.

    Everything being equal it simply wont be better than properly set up 4WD. That was a silly comment that cost you a lot of credibility. Good video up until that point.
