To make an antiqueing stain for new wood, place a sheet (12×12 or so) aluminium foil soaked in white vinegar until it dissolves. Brush it over new wood. Turns it gray and old looking immediately. I have no idea why, but it works very well.
Pretty dang great project, Doug. It looks stunning. I am 100 % positive the bugs, butterflies and other insects will love their bug hotel. Might be a 5 star if not a 7 star hotel...for sure. ;) Thank you for taking us along. I did really enjoy watching it. Have a great weekend. Cheers from Germany.
I love that you re-purposed that great old window, wood and tin. You see promise in things others toss. I bet you scope out all the curbs on trash day lol
You have really stepped up your game. I have never seen anyone work so fast. and wow, your carvings are really coming to life. I would swear I saw that caterpillar move. Seriously, though. This is gorgeous, and I love your take on it. I can't wait to see how it's doing in a year or so, and if the butterflies will use it. Thanks so much for sharing.
That is Bob on. Love re-using stuff that is scrap to other people. Man after my own heart. No fancy sawdust extraction, just need a dustpan and brush! I wish I had as much room as you have. I seem to have timber and bits of doors with hinges attached in the way. Yesterday I spent an hour (3!) sorting through some hardwood pallet wood that was on top the table saw. Time to make that bee/ bug hôtel 👌🍀
Thanks for starting my day on a fun and happy note. You put a smile on my face and gave me an urge to get up and get moving. Thanks for sharing your energy, imagination and drive. Enjoy your day.
Wow Doug, that's beautiful... I would put that inside my house for decor. A craft store would sell that for a pretty penny. (I also like the nail gun.)
All that work without a single cup of coffee!! If you can't go camping with the bugs invite the bugs to come to you. Do an overnighter under the new bug house to speed the move in🐝🦟🐜🕷🐳😲
Awesome take on the idea sir. Made the 'mistake' of showing my wife (I think she is a a type of squirrel since she loves collecting acorns) so I can see a smaller version with acorns, chestnuts, pinecones - thank you for providing the inspiration and guidance on how to get it done. The content you share helps bring a little peace in the world we live in. Thank you for taking the time to film and edit and everything else it takes to put out content.
Doug, that is a work of art. hope you get lots of insects to take up residents. I have been building bee houses for solitary bees for over 12 years now, and use a 5/16" brad point bit to get a very clean hole. The bees will not nest in a hole that is not smooth. My bee houses are for the Osmia lignaria. They are the best pollinator of fruit trees.
Any bug or bee should be beeyond excited to stay there. Yours looks like a 5 star establishment :) The only time I've seen the Bug Hotels were in videos or movies from the UK and generally placed in or around the garden.
Nice Doug! When I was working for the US Forest Service in South Dakota I helped our botanist build some of these pollinator motels. Great to see others doing them. Cheers!
Thanks for the tips. I'm going to make an attempt at building my own soon, hope it's as good as that one. I love that when Doug goes for supplies, he just simply walks out his back door into the wilderness. Great stuff.
As always enjoyed the video but more importantly you have also given me a project I can do with my granddaughter thanks Doug for sharing and to Jim who sent the it to you ❤️✌🏼
Love it, I've been meaning to do one too, that looks great. I have a ton of bamboo plant stakes I was going to cut up to stack with ends out, pre-drilled holes!
Wow! I love it! Even though I don't care for bee or bugs, it would be nice just to watch to see what happens. Good job, Doug! I think I like your high rise better!
Spent many a day in the 'backer' barn hanging Burley. I am from Central Kentucky. I was not fast enough to be a cutter, out in the field, but I could hang with the best of them. We, My grandfather and great grandfather, raised 10 acres of tobacco, like you said a thankless job. Thanks for the video. God Bless, stay safe
This was a great project video to watch. I love the idea and it looks really beautiful! I have a small bee house that my daughter made in school and it gets alot of interesting activity. 👍👍
I had fun watching you collect the supplies you needed for your project, I love all things pine trees and wood. God bless, your hands and the ability you have to create such beautiful work. Thank you,for sharing your time and your craft.👍
Great video Doug. Always something to learn from you, and be entertained while you learn it. Thanks for the time you dedicate to sharing your knowledge.
Beautiful job of constructing the insect hotel! I bought a small one online this spring. Fun to watch you make the large one using the window frame and then finishing the project with the items you gathered from the outdoors! Love your channel and had to subscribe! Thank you!
Good piece mate. I have a similar piece in Australia. We have to watch out for invasive mud wasps. We have 17,000 species of native bees. Our largest is the solitary Blue Banded Bee.
Very good, Doug. I have one on my allotment hung on a tall tree stump! You can make a big one out of a stack of pallets. Not much crafting, but great for the insects! Think I enjoyed watching as much as you enjoyed making! Regards Stephen.
As always Doug, another great film. Seeing ideas of things to do and learning how to do them is a great way off learning. I will bee (sorry for the pun) looking at what I have lying around to make an insects hotel/home.
Great job. Very decorative. We have a little one with bamboos sticks we got from Costco. The first summer we had so many tiny little wild bees it was fantastic. And they don’t sting. We now need to redo the house as it is falling apart. Will borrow your ideas and add on to ours. So thanks.
I haven't got the first clue about woodwork or crafting but I really enjoy watching your videos. Who knows, maybe one day i'll have a go :) Also, where you live looks absolutely beautiful!
I wonder how many times, as Doug was stripping the window, he thought " Why didn't I just build a new frame in 10th of the time". But, what a charming end result.
Wow, what a sweet interesting productive video. The critters will love their new home.
To make an antiqueing stain for new wood, place a sheet (12×12 or so) aluminium foil soaked in white vinegar until it dissolves. Brush it over new wood. Turns it gray and old looking immediately. I have no idea why, but it works very well.
Steel wool works too but i think it goes more black
Can’t wait to see that follow up
Pretty dang great project, Doug. It looks stunning.

Might be a 5 star if not a 7 star hotel...for sure. ;)
Thank you for taking us along. I did really enjoy watching it. Have a great weekend.
Cheers from Germany.
Be a great sidedrop for a coffee and whittle come spring. Very cool
I love that you re-purposed that great old window, wood and tin. You see promise in things others toss. I bet you scope out all the curbs on trash day lol
Daughter and I really enjoyed this build. Hope you make more fun build videos like this based on user submitted ideas. Cheers.
I love that your chop saw is on a old sewing machine stand.

“I may have overdone it” 😂
Wow Doug, that's beautiful... I would put that inside my house for decor. A craft store would sell that for a pretty penny. (I also like the nail gun.)
Using the window really makes the whole project. Very cool. Congrat's on passing 175k subscribers.
Loved to see you have fun with this - hang the time - it's worth every second. Thanks Doug - and Jim for the inspiration
Liked that project. You did a great job building it. It'll be interesting see to what takes up residence. Have a great day.
Oh man, you got me all excited to start watching videos on carving Tree Bark...
Love the sewing machine stand for the miter saw. Never would have thought to use that. I bet its sturdy as heck.
Good morning Doug ! Very Nice , Great Rustic House. Love to see more. 👍👍😊

Well done. Maybe it's time for a full garden tour. It would be cool to see all of your installations in your yard.

really cool Doug nice job as usual ,good winter project for us,take care/be safe
Doug now nearly everyone knows Aphids are the Gardeners meanest pests so no need to think of them as over winter guests. Nice little catchment area.
That’s why I said I was housing aphid and mite eaters
