    Hi loving watching your vlogs to get ideas for my patch of land that I want to turn wild. Mine's on a steep hill and the soil is like concrete! Saw your other vlog about how to loosen up the soil and put grass cuttings in, great tip. As regards to bug hotel, I have been told that pallets are treated with lots of nasty chemicals that are not garden friendly. How would I go about finding pallets that have not been treated?

    • @Gardenninja
      @Gardenninja  3 года назад

      Hi Kate. You can check the pallets for codes. The UK created ones have a series of numbers which are usually fine. Check Google for the code interpretations. It’s more the imported ones that contain all sorts of nasties. Hope that helps. 🥷🌿 Lee

    Great job, should the large bug hotel be cleared out at end of year ? From Australia

    • @Gardenninja
      @Gardenninja  7 месяцев назад

      Hi Colin. No! Leave it as it is. The messier the better for bugs. If you clear them out you will be removing eggs, larvae and a habitat that can take years to establish. If anything simply add some more pruned herbaceous material to it but that’s it! 🥷🌿👌

    • @Gardenninja

      @@Gardenninja Good to hear!

  • @johnlewis9745
    @johnlewis9745 2 года назад +1

    Wouldn’t it be better to have drilled holes of a variety sizes in the same posts and have them sloping slightly upwards to prevent rainwater penetrating deeply ? Another way of making a solitary bee home is to get containers of tin or plastic about 16cms by 10 cms and fill them with ordinary drinking straws. Then hang then around you home, garden or in the wild. Each year you can either wash and return the used straws or use fresh ones. If you wish you can mix the straws with some of nature’s own of various sizes to find the most popular with the bees.

    • @Gardenninja
      @Gardenninja  2 года назад

      Hi John. The issue with drilling them at angles is that water, debris or even frost can then fill up in the tubes. Remember: they don’t get drilled all the way through. Solitary bees lay their eggs into individual chambers inside the drilled holes. Which are capped at each end. In the spring they emerge eating their way out of the tube through the chewed up matter the mother bee leaves. Such as pollen and nectar as the chamber walls. I’m not a fan of using plastic as it’s not breathable. Their chambers can ‘sweat’ I prefer wood, bamboo or even cut back herbaceous perennials. Which ever method you choose though you’re certainly doing more to help than hinder bees. Happy gardening! 🥷🌿🤘

    • @johnlewis9745
      @johnlewis9745 2 года назад +2

      @@Gardenninja Thanks for the prompt response and I take your point about, ‘Sweating’. I won’t be using straws again. I was aware of the other matters. About the upward slope I have used it and it does work. I’m talking of a slope of only a half on inch over six inches. Thanks once again for passing on your expertise.
