Once I started double cleansing I saw fewer breakouts. I'm pretty sure I wasn't get all my makeup off before. To me double cleansing is just using some kind of cleanser twice. I don't always use the korean method.
Same! I used to deal with cystic acne. I didn't double cleanse but i used a benzoyl peroxide cleanser every morning and adapalene at night. The acne was gone for a while, but they came back stronger lol. After trying the double cleanse method, i no longer deal with acne.
I have used a TON of cleansing oils and balms and second cleansers. TBH. No matter what brand my face ends up being drier even with moisturizer. I have dry, dehydrated, VERY sensitive, acne prone type 1 rosacea. I’m actually over double cleansing. It’s just too costly and time consuming. I don’t use Micellar water either so I’m trying to find an alternative but I don’t think there is one.
In case someone didn’t know this, but Double cleaning is not invented by Korean people, Japanese people have been doing it for 30 years, and the first cleaning oil( the ones emulsify) is invented by shu uemura who happened to be a Japanese.
Actually, Dr. Erno Laszlo, the pioneer of modern skincare developed double cleansing almost a century ago. Many people refer to it as a relatively new trend which is actually not the case.
If your toner is still removing gunk from your face then you are not double cleanse properly or your cleaning product are not doing their job properly .
It's definitely a personal preference. I find it unnecessary in my case and often just makes my skincare routine longer(which is fine because some people might like!)
It's kinda like washing clothes.. common sense and actual look and feel will tell you that you'd be needing a 2nd and even 3rd rinse. For days where i'm just at home or just worn sunscreen once that day (no reapplication), regular cleanse is enough. But for fullface makeup days or when i just feel the city's pollution has stuck to me, heck i'd be double cleansing not just my face but my entire body.
I was taught to remove makeup then wash my face. From my days on stage, I would use a cleansing cream or balm to remove the makeup and a bar soap to wash with. I used Abschminke for years until my intolerances to petrochemicals and fragrances were identified. It’s too bad, because that stuff can melt any makeup easily. I followed it with Neutrogena bar soap until I discovered that the scent and tallow in it didn’t agree with my skin. I then embarked on a quest to find cleansing products that worked for me. It’s an ongoing process. As I’ve aged and moved to different climates, I’ve had to adapt my routines. But I still remove my makeup and/or sunscreen then cleanse my face.
About 5 years ago, I went to school for esthetics. The first step in a facial is a double cleanse. I remember when I first started doing this, I thought it was overkill. Then after doing facials, cleansing my own face (with better knowledge) I started seeing the huge benefits of a double cleanse. If you wear makeup, A double cleanse shouldn’t be an option for you. If you only wear skincare/ sunscreen? You could probably get by with one wash, but I still highly recommend the double. The first wash isn’t “cleansing” as much as it’s there to break down everything, which is why I recommend an oil or balm for the first (don’t worry, this won’t break you out. This will actually help with breakouts because it wont overstrip your skin causing it to produce more oil) The second wash gets deeper into the pores and gets rid of the leftover product from the first wash. Just because you can’t see the residue left on your skin, doesn’t mean it’s not there. Overall I highly recommend the double cleanse. Out of all the “hype” / viral things, this is one I stand behind.
But oil cleanser with mineral oil can break out cuz I use one and I also clean my face properly with water base after that but it was still breaking me out. Do you have any suggestion?
It is anecdotal but that's not to say it doesn't work. When i only used a face wash i always had dirt/sebum left on my skin and i had to wipe with toner. So clearly a face wash isn't sufficient to remove all dirt and i don't even wear makeup. Hence it's kinda logical that if you're using an extra cleanser which is removing all dirt and clogged pores then you have lesser chance of breakouts and dullness.
I love the double cleanse I feel it has improved my skin and it really helps get rid of everything off of your skin especially if you have on makeup. I love it.
oil cleanser made my life so much easier. Trying to get sunscreen off was a nightmare with ordinary cleaners. A lot of people get the liquid oil cleanser 1st step wrong. There is a right and wrong way to do it. Pampered wolf, a UK lady on RUclips gives a demo how to do it correctly (hope ok to recommend it). No more sunscreen residue! I love oil cleansing now, it's my favourite part of the day 😊
Dr please check out the Darphin Banana and Chamomile Cleanser. The foam literally breaks down the sunscreen. Whether you wear heavier make up/liquid foundations/sunscreen or not, miscellar water first followed by a cleanser usually does the job leaves my face feeling super clean. Without micellar water I use too much cleanser and still see residue! Huge plus for heavier make up since you don’t have to scrub your face so hard with your cleanser! Will never not use miscellar
My skin breaks out and dries easily, so I only do so when I apply make up or I had constant reapplication of sunscreen. I do feel double cleansing does it’s job well. It’s just my sensitive skin.
I still use makeup remover "towel" for makeup (wet and hold, gently wipe, no rubbing) because no cleansers (double or single) would remove it without getting me frustrated and looking like a panda.. And I don't wear much makeup! But mascara is always on my undereyes with just a wash (like barely visible dark grey filter) but I just started double cleanse because of sunscreen! And don't feel stripped but not much else, will have to see it in few weeks
it just makes sense. SPF, titanium dioxide, mica, and waterproof makeup etc comes off easier with an oil or petroleum jelly or Albolene or cold cream. Then wash it all off. No fighting.

Hi Dr. Dray, how would I double cleanse with benzoyl peroxide? Do I use an oil based cleanser and then the benzoyl peroxide? Or benzoyl peroxide and then a water based cleanser?
Hi!! I'm currently on accutane and my routine is pretty simple: a gentle cleanser and sunscreen. I feel like my cleanser alone isn't enough to remove the sunscreen, so can I use a cleansing balm or micellar water? I'd appreciate it if you could help me out! Thanks!!
I am not acne prone at all but oil cleansers give me breakouts. Even when emulsifying properly. Is using a water based cleanser sufficient when wearing sunscreen?
@@db-gb5xi Yes, not if I'm not wearing make-up for example. I wear water resistant sunscreen with multiple applications throughout the day and I use a regular cleanser once and it gets it off. You absolutely do not have to. If you want to, go ahead but sunscreen comes off with a cleanser just fine.
"in terms of reducing dryness and irritation" versus what? Because when I single cleanse, I definitely have less dryness and irritation than when I double cleanse. I don't wear heavy duty sunscreen or any makeup though. I just use my cerave hydrating cleanser in the winter or my Neutrogena hydroboost hydrating gel cleanser in the summer.
Honestly, do you really need clinical trials to show that double cleansing is effective at removing makeup, dirt, sunscreen? I'm all for science...but what? "the NIH is not out here funding double blind placebo controlled trials on double cleansing" 🤣 best way to open a video
How would you even placebo a double cleansing? Lmao
