I had the absolute pleasure of casting Tom Kenny in my pilot a few years back. He came to the studio and worked out the voice of his character on the spot. It was so amazing watching him try different things. I didn't feel worthy when I had to direct him. The man was so kind and professional.

I love how articulate Tom Kenny is, he is able to express precisely what he is thinking when he approaches a new character and how to embody their personality. Seems like it takes a very empathetic person to be able to do that because you have to know what if feels like and sounds like to live in another personality’s body
What i never appreciated about voice actors until now, is they don't just play the voice of a character, they actually create the character. As Tom switched between voices my imagination ran with the rest of the scene you might expect the character to be in just based on its voice at the time.
He would do a voice, I would be like "ya that's great!" Then he'd change it a little and I was like "omg THAT'S IT" and then he would change it a little more and I was like "💀"
THAT'S why it's easier to DO a voice than CAST one, in my opinion. You hear SO many talented people, but in the end you can only cast ONE. If they ALL stink, I'll end up doing the voice, myself. lol (only happened a couple of times) As SB would say, "LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!" ;)

He doesn't improvise 5 new voices. He improvised several different voices for each character. It's more like 15 voices that he did (3 per character).

I love how articulate Tom Kenny is, he is able to express precisely what he is thinking when he approaches a new character and how to embody their personality. Seems like it takes a very empathetic person to be able to do that because you have to know what if feels like and sounds like to live in another personality’s body
He voiced so many characters till the point that his normal voice sounds like all voices of the characters he played all mixed into one
Well that’s kinda how it works 😂💀 his original voice is gonna sound like the other ones unless it’s an accent
Hearing him talk about his early meetings with Stephen Hillenburg and how strong his vision for SpongeBob was, brings a tear to the eye. RIP Stephen.
What i never appreciated about voice actors until now, is they don't just play the voice of a character, they actually create the character. As Tom switched between voices my imagination ran with the rest of the scene you might expect the character to be in just based on its voice at the time.
He would do a voice, I would be like "ya that's great!"
Then he'd change it a little and I was like
"omg THAT'S IT"
and then he would change it a little more and I was like
"💀"

THAT'S why it's easier to DO a voice than CAST one, in my opinion. You hear SO many talented people, but in the end you can only cast ONE. If they ALL stink, I'll end up doing the voice, myself. lol (only happened a couple of times) As SB would say, "LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!" ;)
