      There’s no replacement for displacement! Agreed! Reviewers like to spend their time trying to convince the crowd that the .308 is past its prime… If there is a cartridge that’s as capable, as easy to load, and as predictable as a .308… I don’t know what it is.. it’s not magic, it hits all the
      high notes and does it with authority… without excessive recoil. Inside 300, it’s as good as it gets for medium to large game and self defense applications.

      The light-for-caliber bullets, like 110 & 125 gr might serve well, and can have v. little risk of over-penetration.
      This was something that I was unable to find any gel tests for, so I tested 3 of them myself.
      I'd say "success" in knowing I can grab the .308 if that happens to be what is nearest if/when 4 jokers push through my front door.

    • @OldMister
      @OldMister 3 месяца назад +1

      That's the whole point of the *Critical Defense Rifle ammo.* As you can see, it doesn't overpenetrate in gel even compared to handgun rounds. And what you can't see here is that it just disintegrates against solid barriers like walls. It's perfectly safe to use in densely populated areas (if you'd consider something like .357 Magnum to be)

  • @cgsimons1187

    Even a FMJ in .308 is likely to suffice as anti-personnel rounds. Though either of these two bullets are going to further ensure it gets the job done. I lean slightly towards favoring the Critical Defense for normal size 2-legged predators. With the penetration that Gold Dot has, it could also work well on larger animals.

    A ar10 with a 16" barrel sounds just fine to me for home defense. Just because the round is capable of reaching out to further distances doesn't mean its a bad choice for up close and personal. I say if someone breaks into your home, i don't want a fair fight. I want every advantage i can get! The federal 110gr varmint rounds in .308 with a huge hollow point cavity would be my choice. 308 would only be difficult to justify for defense if your target is too far away to be a realistic threat, but this is true of any cartridge. I use 308 FMJ as part of my bear defense strategy because the barn is 100 yards from the house. I've only once seen a bear close to the barn. He was about 125 yard away but came no closer and left when he heard me. If one ever did attack my family or animals while I'm in the house, I believe the 308 will get the job done.

It's a little bit more to clean sometimes, but the main thing that keeps me from doing as many rifle tests is I can only do two per day in a set of blocks because of how much disruption it makes, but I can do at least 4 handgun tests in a day with the same set of blocks. That and having to walk back and forth takes more time. I'm definitely gonna start doing some more though now that the weather is getting warmer.

    Galil ace pistol or Remington 700 pork sword come to mind. Belt fed people would be tickled by these too. The upper end of penetration after all barriers are factored, physiological extremes, and other unexpected variances is right around 28" in some discussions, so that is in there. Penetration depth can double almost between 10% and 20%+ gel with simple barriers like cloth, plus distance, and that is typically without bone ect. You would be surprised, and that is how you cover two legged to the biggest beasts and situations. I believe government stopped testing like that early 80's and that was the determination.

    That was a great test and video! I believe I would choose the Gold Dot as well. I would use my SCAR for self-defense on my property if I had to, but I would only reach for it if someone invaded my home if it was my only firearm. The PWS muzzle brake on the SCAR generates such a loud and concussive blast I couldn't imagine firing it inside my house. It's so obnoxious that I wonder if it isn't the worst 30-caliber brake on the market. Those who know how bad it is start getting anxious when I whip it out at the range. Shooting muffs on top of foam earplugs still isn't enough for me to stand beside someone else shooting it. The best place to stand as a spectator is directly behind the shooter. I bought a Surefire 3-prong flash suppressor to replace the brake with, but I still need to install it. Then I can use my Warden blast can with it or a SOCOM762 RC2 suppressor if I ever get one. I still don't really want to be on that list yet, especially with how our current government and federal agencies have acted recently.

      The biggest deteriment of .308 for in home defense is the ungodly amount of concussive blast they put out, esp from a short barrel with a brake. My buddy has a PWS 216 with the same brake FN ships on the 17S, and I have an Aero Precision M5 with an 18 in Proof that has a VG6 Epsilon on the end of it, and they will both ring the steel columns at the range like a tuning fork, even without walls. Indoors, it would be like having a flashbang grenade go off two feet in front of your face every time you dropped the hammer. Just stupifying muzzle blast. The kind that rattles windows in panes and leaves you with tinnitus. I get that all guns are loud indoors, but short .308s are obnoxious.

    In the eyes of a jury, a high powered battle style rifle is an offensive weapon, whereas a handgun could easily be seen as a defensive weapon. A situation that a prosecuting attorney would use to full advantage. I would never use a powerful rifle for self defense. That's just me, I'm sure others will see it differently. But yeah, I think at 27 yards, the gold dot was the better projectile.

    It works as advertised, but it raises the question of why? 308 rifles are usually a) hunting rifles, usually bolt guns but not always, b) AR-10s, or c) SCARs/FN FAL/M1A etc. Mine is an M1A with a 16 inch barrel. I have a few guns, and the M1A would not be high on the order I would choose them for home defense. 308s, excluding super-expensive and very light ones, aren't known for their CQB prowess. So if I had to use my 308 for home defense, I would use those bullets, but that seems like a thin market. I assume most people with an AR-10 or a FAL etc also have an AR-15 (or 3) and would choose that platform for home defense.

      155 amax has nasty wounding ballistics in humans...it's the closest 308 bullet that almost mimics the wounding ballistics of double 0 buckshot 12 gauge. There have been studies done on this. my setup is a Tavor 7 suppressed with 155 amax...doesn't get much better than that with 20 round pmag clips/magazines.

    Normally defensive shooting is close range however, I think we can make a case for longer (100+ yards) gel testing for 2 items. If you're a hunter you may want to see what perfomance is available at 50-100+ yards and for self defense if someone is shooting at you from 100+ yards away you may be returning fire.
    The velocities are very low due to barrel length. It would be nice to see "short barrel" loads for rifle in 5.56, 7.62 X 51mm -308 just like we see in handgun ammo

    I say, when it comes to personal defense, what you have in hand is what you use. Someone might have only had the budget to buy one firearm and it may be a rifle. If I could only have one, I would choose 308 over many smaller ones. The question, at what distance is it no longer defense always depends on what the aggressor is doing. If you are taking fire from distance, you need to return fire from distance.
    Someone waving a sword or spear from 100+ yards is not imminent danger. Closer, maybe.
    Since budget was my initial concern, I would want the ammunition that had the most utility...the Gold Dot would fit that purpose much better, but so might Core-Lokt, Power Point, Power-Shok, American Whitetail, etc.
    Nice testing, as usual.

    My take on someone using .308 for personal defense is someone who just has their .308 hunting rifle. Like old Joe who lives out in the woods. He has a .308 single shot rifle he got for $180, and he uses for deer. It's all he really needs, and he doesn't have piles of extra money sitting around. But when some two legged critter comes creeping about, well, that's what he has to protect himself. A personal protection load might be the right thing for him.

    I think too many people put too much emphasis on wieght retention. If your getting the penetration and expansion that you want why even care what the final wieght is? Should not even matter if the whole round evaporates. That extra wieght just helps it over-penetrate, as shown here.

    While .308 might not be optimal for defense compared to something else...if it happens to be the nearest thing to you when a few criminals decide to bust through your front door? - and you don't get to choose where you might be standing or sitting at that moment? For me, it's quite possible that the AR-10 could be the one that is a few feet away, so I def appreciate your gel-test!!!
    As such, both of these bullets you tested are found a few deep into my magazine. At the top, though, are the lighter bullets - with very little chance of over penetration with a 110 gr VMAX or Varmageddon.
    I had to do the gel test myself since I wasn't able to find any uploaded anywhere. I was pretty pleased with what I saw!

      How do you figure 308 is not optimal for defense?

    • @ShastaBean
      @ShastaBean 6 месяцев назад

      @@likeinflationkeepvotingdem1394 #1 (to me) is recoil...which spells slower follow-up shots if a miss or multiple threats.
      #2 (as seen here) is over-penetration, with typical defensive rounds.
      What I saw with varmint-rounds solves for this, though. Not to mention the block flies 1.5 feet into the air, which I haven't seen with rounds that penetrate so far. These two rounds here would be way better for not having to track a 900 lb. elk for 5 miles. But for dropping 200 lb. 2-legged threats - I'll take the 9" of penetration dumping 2500 ft-lbs all day.
      Plus, the firearm's weight and also very often they have a magnified optic mounted and longer barrels.
      They are generally better suited for longer distance, which typically comes at the expense of being suited for CQ.
      If woken from sleep, I wouldn't want to be walking around the house with my 10 vs. the 15 or the LC.

      @@ShastaBean Most of what you said is subjective or NOT true unless you're old school with an older AR. Just like the same people who say 9mm is better for defense than 45 & 10mm. I wouldn't go for a 308 for defense unless it's a big game animal or if I'm in a middle of a fire fight against several people but I still chose my AR-10 over an AR-15 any day but that's just me. For optimal defense I'm going with my 10mm or my 45 but everyone likes what they like. Thanks for the info though.
