Thanks to everyone who recommended a powered USB hub, and a special thanks to Gary S. who confirmed that the Atolla hub works before I ordered it! All of you have helped the iPad community to use multiple storage devices and HDDs on iPad / iPad Air / older iPad Pros.
Hi, I apparently I didn’t get notifications of your replies, sorry! @Luke Pham, I’ll take a look at it! - @budidr I didn’t try that yet, but it can read multiple devices of more than 4 GB - @Ken Durant: thanks! :D
I was a little bit worried after ditching my 2018 11” 64GB iPad Pro for a 2017 10.5” 512GB + 4G iPad Pro that I wouldn’t be able to connect anything to it. You have proven me wrong, thanks! And huge love from Turkey!
Yay, glad I could help! But wait a minute, the 11 inch 2018 iPad Pro has USB-C, so you can easily connect anything to it without extra power. I use a HyperDrive on my 2018 iPad Pro for that.
for all who needs to know about HDD drive, i have a Power delivered 4TB HDD drive and iPad perfectly recognizes it with a Apple dongle, so as long as your hard drive has separate PD your iPad will absolutely work, in other scenarios as shown in this great video you need this kind of power delivered USB hub to power your non powered regular HDD drive to be recognized
After being a user of an Iphone 11 in november, I was not totally sure whether to buy an İxpand or Lighting to USB3 Camera Adapter. This video made me to "invest in" the adapter instead of the İxpand since it provides me to use not only other/available USB flash storages but also SSD's as additional/external storages, plus connecting other useful hardwares/devices as well☺👍
Great idea thanks ! I have followed your procedure as I have two older hard drives that I wanted to upload to the cloud and have done that now so very helpful thanks . I don’t know why windows users are complaining this just expands the iPads ability to perform way beyond its intended use . I use my iPad 8 for a work horse daily driver , home computer and content consumer . The cost of this setup even in New Zealand dollars is negligible $45 for the storage I cleaned up and will add to my iPad 8 . If you order this through Amazon be careful to order the one WITH the power cord they sell both with and without and Inordered the later not realising and had to purchase a universal power supply as well , my fault but an extra expense
For all of you using external storage make sure to format your drives to APFS for compatibility with iPad and fast transfer speeds to and FROM the iPad
FYI for those who want large file access - Fat 32 formatting has a Max File size of 4GB... Using exFat Formatting allows over 4gb Files...I would choose the latter if going to store video or Music projects, such as Garageband etc.. (exFat is compatible with mac stuff)
I seem to have seen something like this back when iOS 13 was in Beta, for me with the original 12” Pro it is at least a solution for a docking station, and if necessary, travelling, but it’s all becoming a bit tethered. I have an old laptop, it it is clunky and probably can’t upgrade to the latest OS. I got the wireless WD drive for backing up my SD cards when on the road, but accessing photos wirelessly is slow, this at least will make it more practical going through images. All I need now is a mobile version of Photo Mechanic (I’m not into subscription software such as Adobe CC). I know the rather expensive Gnarbox has an app with some of this, but it’s not in my budget.
You cleared my doubt. I watched your both video and now i an very happy because you solved my biggest doubt/problem. Now i can invest in usb adapter. Thanks and because of this video i subscribed your channel.
This is awesome news as I have the Apple dongle like you have now I just need to get the usb hub you demo in this video. I have an iPad 6th gen. And iPhone 8 (that I bought in 2019)
Thank you so much. I have a likewise hub from Aurosonic and it works great with the lightning to USB adapter. Now I need to find an adapter that also has the hdmi and I can use my ipad with a large monitor like almost a real computer
Thank you for the update! I was thinking of going on a trip only with my ipad air 2 and not taking my laptop. Now I can also take a hard drive to do some extra storage heavy work while I'm travelling! By the way I couldn't help myself getting distracted by your pencil case - I could see the Korean letter 철컹철컹 on your pencil case and then I realised that you had a trip to South Korea. I hope you had some good time there. Thanks for your video again.
HI THANKS FOR ALL YOUR INFORMATIVE VIDEOS... I'VE GOT A QUESTION WHICH I HOPE YOU MAY HAVE ANSWERS TO.... WITH THE NEW IPAD OS 13 CAN YOU CONNECT HDMI, MOUSE, KEYBOARD AND HARDDRIVES AT ONCE AND USE AT ONCE TO HAVE A PROPER DESKTOP SETUP WITH IPAD PRO 10.5 2017?... IF YOU CAN MAKE VIDEO ON THIS IT WOULD BE GREAT.... THANKS IN ADVANCE.
Hello ! Thanks for this hub it would be vert helpful. I have some questions : Can i put a câble USB tout HDMI on the atolla hub ? Will An other adapter (like RJ45) work with it ? Can i put a dongle to use a mouse + keyboard (Logitech) on the atolla hub ? Good night :))
Hi, Great video! If you connect a RJ45 to USB adaptor to that HUB, are you able to make your IPAD work with network cable and not WIFI? Also the question for HDMI to USB adaptor?
Thank you for this video, I wonder if you can tell me if it works well for viewing photos and videos on an iPad Air 2 that are stored on an external drive? Thank you! Your videos are so helpful! I have an iPad Pro 9.7": if I buy a lightning to sd cards dongle will the sd card work as a normal hard drive? Can I move videos and file through the files app as a normal thumbdrive? Thank you very much for your advice.
Hi! Yes, it will show up as an external storage device in the Files app. I actually demoed it in another video I made about external storage on Lightning iPads (see channel). Thanks for watching!
Thanks Fjordstrøm for testing. I'm still looking for a powered hub that can be powered with a powerbank so I can connect a HDD while I'm off the grid. It would be nice to be able to backup my photo's to a HDD when I'm on the road. A 2TB HDD is much cheaper than a 2 TB SSD. Any ideas?
@Hi Frank ! I am almost looking for the same thing as you. It would be great to find an USB 3.0 Hub that could be powered up by an external powerbank (why not USB C -18W ?). Like this we could directly copy files from 1 USB (Ex. SD card reader / DSLR Camera) to the 2nd USB (HDD) without doing an intermediate files drop on iPhone storage... I found this zendure.com/products/x6-power-bank-usb-hub-white but to expensive for me and i have already a powerbank... Maybe someone has a better solution ? What do you think @Fjordstrøm Travel & Tech ?
@sTfanB I saw an RUclips video from a guy, who used an Uni USB-C 6 in 1 Hub with an iPhone. He could copy from one drive to another, though he used SD-cards and a SSD. But it has an USB C port for power delivery, so I hope it can power a HDD. I ordered it and I'm waiting for it to be delivered. I will let you know when it arrives and I can test it. uniaccessories.io/collections/latest-innovation/products/uni-usb-c-6-in-1-hub-1
I have it now and it works with my iPad mini 5 and iPhone SE. I can read from and write to a WD Passport Ultra 1 TB HDD, while the hub is powered by a powerbank (2.1 A). I don't need to power the Apple USB adapter. As this hub has a SD-card reader I can copy footage to my HDD with my iPhone. I had to reformat the HDD from NTFS to APFS.
WD Elements 2TB HDD connected via the Lightning-USB3 Camera adapter to an 12.9” iPad Pro 2017 (2nd gen.) is showing up in the Files App. No powered USB hub necessary only a lightning cable to connect to the lightning-USB3 dongle with the original PSU from the iPad (12 Watt)
Curious if you have any thoughts on why I am able to connect my Samsung T7 SSD to both of my iPhones using the Lightning to USB3 cable, but for some reason my iPad is unable to power up the T7 using the same configuration. It acts as if the T7 is not getting enough power via the Lightning to USB 3 camera adapter cable. Have you ever experienced this before? I am thinking that I need to try one of these powered USB banks to see if that resolves my issue.
So would a DAC, Nintendo Switch & PlayStation 5 USB 2.0 cable be plugged directly into three of the 4 available 3.0 USB ports for audio use? And what exactly is the USB A port cable supposed to plug into exactly if you're not using a PC?
Have you tried connecting a camera to the USB hub instead of a SD card reader? Ive tried to connect my Panasonic G9 via the USB to backup pictures but the Files app on the iPAD pro 10.5 can't see the device. Trying to travel with one less piece of kit! Any suggestions?
I have the camera adapter lightning (the one that does not have the power source adaptor) ..do you know if it works anyway ? Or I need the usb cam era adaptor 3 cable ?
Hi! Hmm, I think it should work too, as Atolla's hub already is powered anyway. You could try first, and order the adapter if it doesn't work? Please keep me posted :)
I want to use my headset usb type to connect on my iphone 8plus. If i have the usb 3 adapter and usb power hub will it work? My headset is gaming but the end chord is usb type. Need ur help sir
I ordered this last night after watching your video and our arrived today and it still did not work for my external hdd drives. What else may I try to do? I have the ipad pro 2017. I used it also with the lightening to usb powered dongle and it is the apple brand.
I just bought the usb hub and lightning connector as you mentioned because I have the exact Seagate drive and was thrilled to be able to access it from my lightning iPad Pro 12.9.... it won’t work! I’m frustrated as I just spent over $50 to get these. My small lightning “memory sticks” show up but they worked off of the iPad to begin with... HELP!
Can you just connect your iPad with an external eithernet connection? Is it just as simple as that? Just connect to eithernet in your settings and you’re in?
Wow, this is super exciting to see! I have been able to connect HDDs to my iPad Pro 2017 model via just the Apple camera adaptor (plugged in to a power source), but not to my iPad 6. Thanks for testing this! 😁👍
Paolo Ilustre High fives! I love the iPad 6. Yes, I use the same Apple “camera adapter” he showed in this video for both my 6 and my Pro, but without a powered hub like he shows here, only the Pro was able to power on HDDs, whereas both iPads worked great with thumb drives. I’ve used the camera adapter pretty extensively so far with my iPad 6 to connect a thumb drive at work, and it’s been a fantastic upgrade to what the iPad is capable of doing. Now it looks like the hub in this video will broaden the iPad’s capabilities yet again.
There seems to be several Atolla USB hub models, and they vary a lot in price. The most expensive refers to a data charging port. Is this the model one has to use to get full iPad functionality? Another question: can any externally powered USB hub do the same thing?
Hi! Yes, this hub makes sure I can connect multiple drives to my iPad Air 2 (or iPhone), including HDDs. I'm guessing any externally powered hub can do this. The one I used is linked in the description, along with the dongle.
Thanks but two questions can you transfer files from a SD card with USB adapter to HDD in the files app on an iPhone 8 by chance? Another question, will the file system NTFS on the HDD and standard file system on the SD card work with IOS 13?
Hi i have ipad pro 10.5 can I use this usb hub with 30w power bank (or higher watt)to use external hdd drive? Sometimes i have use ipad to work outside.
All I want to do is dump all my movies, photos, and writings...I just want to free up useless and unused data...but do not want to delete it. I have the Lacie 1 T external hard drive, can this be used? I just bought the IPad os 13 which do u recommend for power drives and external devices?
Will the hub work without the Apple connector? Using the lightening-USB cord supplied with the iPad? I don’t really want to purchase two items for the one task of backing up photos... thanks for great videos.
@@ruwndarwanchu8146 Hmm, that's strange. What file system is it? Normally, the USB-C iPad Pro should be able to power up any drive. You are limited to these file systems: APFS, exFAT, FAT, macOS Journaled and APFS Encrypted. NTFS isn't supported.
Fjordstrøm Travel & Tech It’s previous version 2 TB USB-A to Micro-B and not the latest USB-C cabled drive but it’s macOS journaled format (compatible) i use wit my MBPro. I thought, it’s due to not enough power so maybe with the Apple AV multiport adapter with enough power it could read my external drive.
Fjordstrøm Travel & Tech Please make a video on this, it would be extremely good and helpful to alot of ppl who owns iPad Pro 2018-2020 with this issue/bemuse. Thanks
Hi! Have you tried to connect that to a desktop/ laptop? Have you tried also to connect iPad/ iPhone onto those 4 usb ports and the desktop/ laptop reads them? Did they charged also? Thanks for the response.
thanks for the Video. Nicely done. I am trying to hook up a Samsung T7 SSD to my iPad mini 4 and I have the adapter and I have a powered USB hub. But the usb hub only has a 1000 mA power supply and it allows me to read a USB stick but not the T7. I guess I need a more powerful powered USB hub ? The T7 is said to run with 2.5 to 7.5 W means at 5V that be more than 1000 mA. My MBP is having display problems and I want to switch to my iPad and LumaFusion as a backup until I have a screen replacement or a MBP replacement for Final Cut.
Absolutely super series of videos, Fjordstrøm. So, so valuable! Thank you. 😉 Quick question... I have an Anker PowerExpand 11-in-1 multiport hub with a usb-c connector. I'd like to have the benefit of those 11 ports on my iPhone. Can I use this hub with my iPhone, (via the Apple usb Camera adapter), and power the Anker hub itself from a/c wall power using an Apple usb-c power adapter and Apple usb-c charge cable? ☺
I have a 2017 iPad Pro. Would like to use USB3 to lightning cable, usb C hub with usb c>usb b adapter. USB C hub is powered and has hdmi, multiple USB ports, SD port. Would it work? Thoughts? I need a travel workflow that I can connect multiple external storage and possibly ext monitor/TV from hotel room. All while minimizing what I have to carry.
Bro, do we necessarily need the apple lightning to usb 3 adapter with the lightning port for charging that you used in this video? Or the one without a lightning port for charging (the cheaper one) in the use case of a powered usb hub.. Because here in India the dual port camera adapter that you used is out of stock. The single usb camera adapter is available.. So can I use that single output usb3 camera adapter with a powered usb hub to transfer files to my storage devices?
Hi! I tried it out and you still need the lightning port if you want to charge your iPad too while using the hub. I can't confirm if the one without will work, but on mine, if I don't plug in anything in that lightning port, I can still use the hub. I think it's worth trying (as you don't have any other option) and return it if it doesn't. Just check the return policy first.
u said the hub doesnt provide the ipad with power right? does this mean that my ipad will lose power as i use the hub and work on my projects? great video btw!!
hey thanks your videos very helpful one more thing i want to know is the writing/reading speed on your ixpand usb drive when transferring data through its lightning port? i got an information about 4mb/s reading speed on this xpand drive , its unbelievable slow

Hello I am an youtuber using iPad Air 3 for video tutorials and running out of space will Sandisk 500gb ssd works without powered usb hub?
Thank you very much
Wow, this is super exciting to see! I have been able to connect HDDs to my iPad Pro 2017 model via just the Apple camera adaptor (plugged in to a power source), but not to my iPad 6. Thanks for testing this! 😁👍
JNGarrettArt hi, I have the iPad 6th Gen too. Do you use the same usb3 dongle?
Paolo Ilustre High fives! I love the iPad 6. Yes, I use the same Apple “camera adapter” he showed in this video for both my 6 and my Pro, but without a powered hub like he shows here, only the Pro was able to power on HDDs, whereas both iPads worked great with thumb drives. I’ve used the camera adapter pretty extensively so far with my iPad 6 to connect a thumb drive at work, and it’s been a fantastic upgrade to what the iPad is capable of doing. Now it looks like the hub in this video will broaden the iPad’s capabilities yet again.
Hi, would it be possible to buy any third-party usb c hub for a laptop and use it with an ipad pro 2021 or it won’t work?
There seems to be several Atolla USB hub models, and they vary a lot in price. The most expensive refers to a data charging port. Is this the model one has to use to get full iPad functionality? Another question: can any externally powered USB hub do the same thing?
Hi! Yes, this hub makes sure I can connect multiple drives to my iPad Air 2 (or iPhone), including HDDs. I'm guessing any externally powered hub can do this. The one I used is linked in the description, along with the dongle.
Thank You
Thanks but two questions can you transfer files from a SD card with USB adapter to HDD in the files app on an iPhone 8 by chance? Another question, will the file system NTFS on the HDD and standard file system on the SD card work with IOS 13?
THANKS A LOT
can you use that hub to connect the ipad to a PC? my main problem is that i want to keep my ipad plugged in permanently but it wont charge
Hi i have ipad pro 10.5 can I use this usb hub with 30w power bank (or higher watt)to use external hdd drive? Sometimes i have use ipad to work outside.
So I don’t need the apple lightning adapter i can use usb to lightning with the powered hub?
Will this work with a 6th gen. iPad too?
All I want to do is dump all my movies, photos, and writings...I just want to free up useless and unused data...but do not want to delete it. I have the Lacie 1 T external hard drive, can this be used? I just bought the IPad os 13 which do u recommend for power drives and external devices?
Will the hub work without the Apple connector? Using the lightening-USB cord supplied with the iPad? I don’t really want to purchase two items for the one task of backing up photos... thanks for great videos.
Hi! The USB cable on the hub is attached to the hub itself, so I can't replace it. So for this hub, I still need the adapter. Thanks for watching :)
@@fjordstrom And if you just plug the USB part of the lightning cord into one of the USB ports on the Atolla hub?
If my external HDD has a password protection, will it allow me to enter the password and open the HDD?
How’s the transfer speed?
My iPad Pro cannot read my HDD WD Passport, I guess power issue. So, will it work with the Apple USB-C AV Multiport Adapter Or any USB-C hub ?
Hi! Hmm, wait, which iPad Pro exactly do you have? One with USB-C or a lightning port?
Fjordstrøm Travel & Tech sorry forgot to mentioned.. USB-C ipad pro
Would you be able to help me? i have a similar set up, but still not able to transfer files to my external drive.
Can i connect my wireless usb headphones? Plus ethernet also on my ipad/iPhone (both at the same time )
thanks for the Video.
Thank you. 😉
Quick question... ☺
What would be the reason Mine doesn’t work ? With IOS 13.4.1 on iPad 7gn
What would happen if I plug the USB A of the HDD to the hub and then USB A to lightning cable 1M to the hub ? Will they recognize each other?
Can you connect 2 HDDs using a hub? Not one HD and one pendrive. 2 HDDs I am asking...
@@fjordstrom Thanx bud!!
u said the hub doesnt provide the ipad with power right? does this mean that my ipad will lose power as i use the hub and work on my projects?
great video btw!!
you great, everybody is using the new iPad however I don't have the new iPad so thankyou
Thank you :)
hey thanks your videos very helpful one more thing i want to know is the writing/reading speed on your ixpand usb drive when transferring data through its lightning port? i got an information about 4mb/s reading speed on this xpand drive , its unbelievable slow
Hi! I actually did a speed test in my other video: ruclips.net/video/8fDVFXwav28/видео.html
