  • Let me show you how easy mixing paint colors can be with this celadon green color mixing tutorial. Mixing your own paint colors doesn't need to be labor intensive or over complicated - you just need to know where to start - I can help with that! If you don't want to pay for another tube of paint, you can make your own - and customize it to find the shade you like best! Celadon is a simple color to mix, let's get to it!
Part 2 will be available on Sunday, July 14, 2024 - I'll link it here after it has been published.
As mentioned in the video, Jane Davies (@jdaviesVT) has a great video on mixing Celadon here: • CELADON
What is your favorite color to mix?

You nailed it on the first go! I generally paint w/ a limited color palette - 2 or 3 colors + black and white so I love mixing colors. I once took a color class and during the semester we were only allowed to use the 3 primaries and white (no black). One exercise was to match the color in rocks that were brought into class. It was very challenging and became a game for me. Years later, I wanted to match the color of sage which is in my area. I knew it was a desaturated blue green and a bit close to your celadon color. I mixed a blue/green and added some white and got a minty B/G. Then I added the complement of red/orange and the minty green was instantly desaturated and I got my sage color. It was like magic. (I was trying to make the sage color in dyes (I was a textile artist) and because there is really no white dye it's done through dilution which is trickier.). On another note - I use the same plastic bottles w/ my Nova paints - how do you keep the tops from getting clogged? Do you rinse the lids after each painting session? I'm loving following your grid collage/painting work - the idea of working on many paintings at once is so great. I tend to work on one piece and get tight very early on. Love your work.

Hi Janet! I love a limited palette too! I’m so glad you’ve been enjoying these videos ❤️ As for my paint bottles… I typically just take the tops off and scrape out any dried bits with a knitting needle. I often forget to out the tops on so it does eventually jam up if I don’t use a color very often, but I don’t mind it too much. The peeling off is satisfying - especially with my gloss medium 😆 Thank you for sharing part of your practice - I’m so glad to have you watching! ❤️

My husband commented that you kept saying yellow, white, black and he found listening a bit dull. Me, Sarah, was on point, but gradually I nodded off for a much needed nap.
I also mentioned to Tom the award I got years ago for my ceramic glaze that I perfected all by my years ago self. And you mentioned ceramic class, so there you go!
I needed a Power Nap. I was out of my prized paint color and here you were to save our day and keep me painting. Prepared paints are great, but less is more and we all need to conserve with prices as they are.
We had just gotten back from Michael’s with canvases and two Golden colors I have been so wanting.
As artists we just love color!!!!

I loved this video and learned the same way you did - Jane Davies! This whas a great video because you never know what you're going to get.
I started with Blick's brand - it only came in a tiny bottle - till Golden came up with Titan Green Pale! But making it yourself is the best! Can't wait to see Part 2!
    Take care!

Great exploration. I too am a fan of celadon. The labels actually also tell you what pigments are in the colors. Celadon by Blick is made from PW6-Titanium White +
PBr7-Burnt Sienna + PB15:3-Phthalo Blue. Titan Green Pale is made from Titan.White + Yellow Iron Oxide + Brown Iron Oxide + Phthalocyanine Green Blue Shade. And Liquitex has a nice gray-green made from Yellow Iron Oxide + Ultramarine Blue + Titan White. So all these combinations could also be explored for mixing your own.

Ooooooooh!! Thank you! Do you know what the numbers mean (“PB15:3” and “PW6”)? Is it just part of the name of the pigment or something else? ❤️

I'd not heard of celedon till I started watching your videos.
You've inspired me to step out of my comfort zone and try playing with my paints and mixing them to see what I get.
I suppose my hesitation comes from worrying that if I mix some paint, getting the same shade again would be challenging. So till now I've tended to stick to ready made bottles of paint.

Nice video!! Since blue is added to black in higher proportions to give it better "eye appeal", then I wonder what would happen if you used different blacks? I can't afford paint right now, otherwise I would have tried it right away!!! Thanks for the lesson and I remember watching the Jane Davis video as well. Cheers!!! 🥰
