Hi. I have (or maybe had, now) a 2018 MB GLS 450 4MATIC, with about 100,000 on the OD.
The car suddenly seemed to go from one problem to another. First, after taking it in for basic maintenance, with the check engine light on, the mechanic pulled up code indicating wonky thermostat. Okay, we got that replaced - but the check engine light remained on.
The mechanic pulled up code(s) indicating camshaft assembly issues.
I drove car home and returned to dealership a few days later, 4 April, 2024, for inspection prep-work.
After some tear-down of the car, 2 weeks later, extended warranty company approved claim. Finally underway with that job, upon completion, the check engine light remained on.
    Again, the mechanic pulled up
another code which initially indicated an original sensor issue but that code somehow changed and became one that addressed random misfiring.
Along the way, service department manager wanted my approval for further tear-down including dropping the engine out before an inspector would come again to verify on behalf of the extended warranty company.
This time I said “no”, aware of certain exclusionary clauses in the service contract - one of them being carbon buildup, hardly uncommon.
My car has been in the shop since 4 April. I have decided to get a replacement vehicle and cash out my extended warranty policy.
Any thoughts on any of this?

Easy job, thanks for the tutorial! I'm still getting a misfire after changing out the plugs, so guess I need to do-over with coil packs :-/ FYI, you can press the red button the driver's side strut and the hood opens another 15^ or so. Really makes it nice for getting those back plugs!

How long a job is it to replace all plugs. What type of plugs did you use? How long do the plugs last?
    Are iridium plugs required?

    • @MunkysGarage

Job takes about 2 hours. These are the plugs I used-www.amazon.com/NGK-PLKR7A-Laser-Platinum-Spark/dp/B001RLRT9Q. Plugs are required maintenance on these vehicles every 91,000 miles or 5 years.

I dont have a specific link to the oe part. I purchased these through my parts distributor. I normally purchase stuff I can't get from them through fcp euro. Hard to beat their prices, and they offer a lifetime warranty on all parts.

And what’s the correct gap calibration for the new spark plugs?

    • @MunkysGarage
      @MunkysGarage  Год назад +2

Spec is 0.8mm. Most spark plugs come pre-gapped new. If you are using platinum or iridium tipped plugs I wouldn't try messing with the gap, as you run the risk of breaking the tip off.

NGK 4288 or PLKR7A, it’s the same plug.
Amazon has them. Changed my 2011 GL450 last year and changing my 12 GL550 this weekend. NGK is what I pulled from my 550 last weekend and they are original.
      Bosch is fine as well.

    • @MunkysGarage

Should be the same process as both engines are from the same engine family. Spark plugs do come pre-gapped.
