  • Jeff Stewart had a gastric bypass surgery about 10 years ago. For several years, he was interested in donating a kidney, but most of the doctors he met with were nervous about the procedure due to his past surgery. At one point, he was told that he’d be eligible for the surgery if he got his blood sugar under control and lost weight.
Jeff achieved these health goals and began the process of preparing for surgery. The final step was a CT scan to verify that he had two kidneys. He had two kidneys - but the scan also revealed some masses on his kidneys and near his intestines. One mass was a gastric adenocarcinoma.
Jeff emphasizes how fortunate he was to have gotten that CT scan - he had no symptoms otherwise. Bypass surgery masked the symptoms since the adenocarcinoma was in the non-functional part of his stomach.
Jeff endured chemotherapy and radiation to treat the tumors. Thankfully, those treatments were highly effective, and he’s been cancer-free for six months now. However, his cancer is a diffuse type, which is highly aggressive and hard to spot. Therefore, Jeff has to be diligent about monitoring for new growths.
When he got his diagnosis, Jeff felt strongly about sharing advice and love with his kids. He compiled his thoughts into a book called Living: Inspiration from a Father with Cancer, where he shares his life story and his passion for Jeopardy (a game he excelled in for many years), and gives uplifting advice and hope for others who are struggling. Jeff believes in the importance of sharing the full story with your loved ones and processing complex feelings, like grief and sadness, as a family.
Jeff’s advice is to listen to your oncologist, since they will have the best resources for treating you.
