I have been looking for video of this FOREVER. I remember as a kid in the 80s and early 90s how bad I wanted to ride this, and then when I was tall enough, it was gone and whirlwind in its place....which was exciting for about 1 min 23 seconds (ride time..) Thank you for posting this & letting me enjoy my childhood for a little while longer :)
I remember riding the Jet Star a lot ... at Casino Pier (Seaside Heights, NJ). It got replaced by the Star Jet; *that* coaster infamously fell into the ocean due to Superstorm Sandy.
Man, I really miss the Jet Star! I rode this many times as a kid and came here because I know it had ended up on one of the piers in NJ. Luckily, Sandy didn't take it with her because it then got moved to France, I hope it's still thrilling riders all of these years later.
If given a choice between Disney World or Knoebels I'd be in Elysburg, PA. Rode the fun Jet Star in 1982 on my first coaster tour. Pouring rain, park closed, The Knoebel brothers gave us a ride on Jet Star. Rain-slicked brakes failed to stop us & we careened into parked cars in station. No damage or injuries, only great memories. Afterwards, while talking to Dick & Ron in Knoebels office, I mentioned a certain woodie in San Antonio, TX closed & for sale. A few months later they were in Texas surveying the Rocket. The rest is history & Phoenix was born.
This coaster was a blast !! The best one Knoebels had at the time . My last ride on her was June 7th 1981 😢 . Knoebels is a park that i will never forget or the "Jet Star " .
I use to ride this coaster ever year when I was a kid. I live in Oklahoma now so I don't get to go back to Knoebles. I remember that coaster didn't have seat belts on it!
Thanks so much for posting this video. I miss this coaster- it was a fun ride. The road that goes through Knoebel's was probably still the main entrance then, too. Ah, memories.
Nice. Even though I am 46 I had never heard of Knoebels until my future wife, who was from Northeast PA, took me there in the summer of 1993, one year too late for the Jet Star. I've been there at least once a year ever since, and my 13 and 10 year old kids have too! :)
@@kellyvankirk2332 I made friends w the rude operator. I would ride free half the time. N she have me her employee ride tickets. I went for a week every summer w cousins.
@@wandap7832 Omg too funny. Well I grew up just 10 minutes away so we were there quite often and it was my first job (worked in the gift shops)! Do you remember her name? God I miss the 80s...
Looks like it was a wicked little coaster. I was four when it was removed so there was no chance of me ever riding it. Did ride the Whirlwind A LOT though. Sad to see that gone.
Wikipedia says the jet star is in France. The "Jet Star" is a steel roller coaster formerly located at Knoebels Amusement Resort. It is a standard production model Schwarzkopf Jet Star, which is a compact ride featuring many small dips and turns. The Jet Star was built for a German carnival operator in 1972. Moved to Astroland on Coney Island for a year before opening at Knoebels in 1977. The Jet Star operated at Knoebels until 1992 when it was replaced by the Whirlwind. After leaving Knoebels it was relocated to Morey's Piers in Wildwood, NJ and then to a small park in France.
@@toddreeder8010 The Jet Star left Morey's Piers in 1999, it wasn't destoyed by Hurricane Sandy. It was moved to Luna Park La Palymyre in Fance where it has continued to operate there since 2000.
I sent a message to knoebel's and asked if this roller coaster is the one destroyed in new jersey from hurricane sandy. They said the one in new jersey was called the star jet. They said it was not the same roller coaster. I looked online and the one in new jersey operated from 2002 to 2012.

How about The Whirlwind? That coaster seems awesome! And they took that out for Flying Turns which was definetely a fail compared to those 2. But it isn't like I hate flying turns.
Rexem flying turns isnt supposed to be amazing they made it so they can prove everyone wrong because they said that Knoebels could not build that ride without any tracks and they did it anyway so that's like a really special ride
@@rexroche453 Flying Turns isn't the most thrilling ride in the park but it's definitely more fun than Whirlwind. Whirlwind was a generic Vekoma MK-1200 that was slow and short. There was nothing noteworthy about it other than it was the only coaster with inversions that Knoebels had until Impulse. Near the end of Whirlwind's life nobody was riding it, there was no reason to keep it. Jet Star is a cool classic ride though and it's sad that it's gone. It's nice to know it's still operating in France.

That's awsome! I don't remember this one at all. Where was it located? I'm only 26 now so I was like 7 when it was removed. I've been going to Knoebels since I was a little kid.
No, it was owned by an independent operator near Coney Island and was purchased by Knoebels after it was repossessed. It's not a Wild Mouse. Wild Mouse coasters have layouts with sharper turns. Lakewood's Wild Mouse had a wooden support structure and was torn down in '82 which is unfortunate because wooden Wild Mouse coasters are rare now.
I don't know why knoebel's got rid of it. I heard someone riding it got a whiplash or broken neck while going around one of the turns. I know one of the turns was very sharp. I don't know if they got rid of it because of someone getting hurt. Knoebels is a very safe place. I don't remember hearing of any injuries on rides caused by the rides. Only injuries caused by actions of riders.
When the ride was first set up back in the 70s it required a slight rebuild. The first turn after the first hill was strong enough to crush collarbones. As to why it was sold, supposedly that particular ride's attendance was slipping. So many people miss it. Myself included
@@Ms1251978 It also seems like it's a long ride, at least one level higher than similar coasters today. Even running 2 or 3 cars at a time I imagine the line would back up pretty fast when it was busy.

The Flying Turns wasn't meant to be a long-action-packed Roller Coaster like the Jet Star. Any idea how fast it was?
50 km/h. The extreme angles, sharp turns and esp the open carriages made it seem alot faster though, which it wasn't in reality. Very smart design.
