  • An original musical tribute by Dave Parker to "The Phoenix" roller coaster at Knoebel's Amusement Resort in Elysburg, PA. In 1985, the giant structure was relocated to Knoebel's from the defunct Playland Park in San Antonio, TX, where it had been known as "The Rocket".

My youngest son loves this coaster. It was his first. I still think knoebels should at the least acknowledge this song in the coal museum area.

This video was made in 1988, with footage shot a short time after the move. Thanks for watching!

I cannot believe I ran across this video. I didn't even know it existed. Thank you Dave, how amazing. Talk about reaching right into my memory and heart! I am from San Antonio & the Rocket was my childhood! Every Saturday as a little girl my dad would take me to Playland park and we would ride that coaster again & again. Like the Park, he has been gone many years, but to find this video & song means more than you know! I hope one day to visit the Phoenix and ride down memory lane! Thank you!

Thanks for posting this. We used to ride the Rocket at Playland whenever we went to concerts in San Antonio. Playland was already pretty much dead in the early 70's but the Rocket was still going strong. I don't remember what it cost, .50 or .75 maybe, but it was a tradition to hit the rollercoaster 2 or 3 times before going to the shows. thanks again

Do you happen to have any pictures of it at Playland? I rode it at Knobles during Coaster Con recently, I'd love to see what it looked like at it's original home. BTW at that event we got to speak with people like John Fetterman who were involved with moving it, most of the structural wood is original, being that it was constructed from hardwood that came from scrapped WW2 battleships. Of course the track has bern replaced numerous times because a more pliable wood is necessary for shaping the track properly, but it's the same wood in the support structure and the same mechanical parts you remember from playland.

what a ride that's all i have to say. best wooden coaster I've ever bin on. they say boulder dash is better i don't think so. this has all the good elements of a coaster. good tunnel, bunny hops, airtime, and the killer first drop. it also has old fashion lap bars which allow you to fly. like what he is talking about in this song. i nearly flew into the car behind me with my hands up on this ride. that's how strong the air time is on this monster.

I rode The Phoenix for the first time about a month ago. That ending has to be one of the best endings on any coaster, it's kinda like the finale of Steel Vengence except Phoenix has a buzbar.

Unfortunately I never got to ride the Rocket in San Antonio, and I my parents took me to Playland park multiple times. The Park was right down the rode from where we lived on Broadway street where the park was located. Now, I plan to head over to Knoebels and finally, yes finally! ride what is now the Phoenix Rollercoaster.

i can't see how boulder dash a coaster on the side of a mountain that has 5 more bunny hops then the Phoenix be better. air time is the only thing that that ride has! this coaster owns in everything Else. i also can't stand how the newer coasters lock u in tight! this coaster is good for 1 reason. FREEDOM! so what if el toro has a injector hill? they strap u in with no free dome! this coaster is better! this coaster allows you to feel the airtime the way airtime should be felt
