Thanks I needed that! Nature photography has been my hobby for over 40 years. I am at a point now approaching 71 years old. I guess I am being held back by negative thoughts about what I can't do now instead of what I can do. I liked the quote you made about " if you think you can or can not you are right" I think I need to focus on how much water I have left in my glass of life, not how much I have already drank from the glass. I really enjoy your videos and the narratives are excellent. Don't ever abandon your style. You have a blessed day.

Thank you for your video!! For me, it has been about the journey not so much the destination. I enjoy staying sitting for hours waiting for the photo opportunity, waiting for a sunset, clouds to move, stars to shine, moon to rise or wildlife to appear. Last year I sat at a river in BC, for 4 days, morning till dusk waiting for Grizzly bears. I enjoyed all that time and finally I got so luck with 800+ images of bears and their activities. I even "encouraged" a few more people to stay with me for longer and they got to see bears too.

Sometimes when I go out after a few hours I may say to myself, it's a slow day, guess I will go home. Then in my head I say "Just stay a bit longer" a bit longer turns into 2-3 more hours sometimes but something happens 90% of the time to make my day. Some time I tell my friend, this is a day where we have to work for the shot, look hard for the subject, walk to a different area, wait a while and we usually get rewarded. If I don't see ospreys or eagles I search for small birds in brush or pine trees and adapt, I shoot some wildflowers and dragonflies, there is always something. You just have to look around, work with what you have and be creative. As always luv your work and attitude, it's refreshing, good luck (if you believe in that) for 2022!!

Good morning. This video is spot on and it presents a philosophy that I follow. we make our "luck" by putting in the time and understanding the nature and habits of the wildlife we are after. I liked your statement about maybe thinking outside the box and looking in other locations away from the crowds. The other day I went to photography a Snowy Owl and when I got to the location there was a line of photographers shooting this one owl. Since I hate photographing with lots of other photographers I thought what other nearby beach might have a Snowy. I drove to that beach and after walking along the dunes I found another Snowy. I was the only photographer there and the Snowy gave me some great shots before I left it alone. PS - I received the Z9 with the first shipments on 12/24. I am using it with the 500mm PF with and without the 1.4xTC. You will not be disappointed! Fantastic. keep these videos coming your philosophy and presentation is a refreshing change from the usual garbage. Thanks. Bob

Last week I went out on my same old walk expecting to see the same old birds, not really looking forward to it, but decided I needed to practice with a long lens and extender. Minutes later I was photographing a white tailed eagle, and then a hen harrier, neither of which I have ever seen here (UK) - I felt very lucky - I must keep practicing! 😁 Great video, thanks.

Thanks for sharing. I recently went through a spell of the "why bother". Like you, getting out and photographing wildlife is a cathartic outlet. Lately I found myself tethered close to the homestead, so I contemplated putting the camera down. But then I wondered what would be my escape from the stressful work days. I knew I had to get back out there, even if it is just the backyard. And yes, that usually means taking the same photos of the same birds each time. I realized that I would still be honing my skills no matter where I was or what I was photographing. After all, for me it isn't a career - it is a relaxing, enjoyable hobby. I worked a bit at adding a natural look and feel to the feeding station. A few times a month I still try to go on a photo adventure. And when I can't, I know I can just step outside my door and feel like I am anyway. It is all good.
By the way, I had been wondering about your tag "Bayou Josh". I found the answer in one of your previous videos. Cool story and glad you kept that little piece of home. I live in Louisiana. Kind of opposite of your experience. I am from here but lived most of my life all over the USA. A few years ago my wife and I made the decision to come back home. It is good to be here.

It ain't a matter of luck... it's a matter of inner soul. Just wonder as to why some people get approached by animals and other don't... Getting close is paramount with wildlife and of course, knowing where to go and knowing your territory is another major factor. But if you cannot get any closer, either you buy a longer lens or you wait for them to come to you. One can only shoot on the same level that he or she carries inside. If you are a beautiful person inside, chances are that you'll photograph that beauty and the animals will give you a hand by reaching out to you - and not vice-versa. And Josh shoots beautiful images... with difficult gear to manage. That says it all imo.

photography luck never happens sitting watching tv, the majority of my best shots have been taken from a hide or camo of some sort especially getting close, just depends on the subject, getting eye level, nice backdrop, tonnes of patience. Urban wildlife is far easier to photograph but the right time right place or luck as you call it, is the feeling combination of the image you see in the viewfinder, the heart race as you capture it thinking you fkn beauty, knowing Lightroom in a couple of hours is going to rock.Well wish me luck for kingfisher tomorrow! stay lucky!

I think experience trumps luck. Learning routines, previous success and put yourself in position and you will get luckier. For instance. I learned that egrets and herons seem to love low tides to feed. Feeding patterns are key! Looking up the tide chart, I see what time I need to be in position with patience. Find a secluded spot and sit still. It may be minutes or hours but it will happen. Just be ready. Have gear pre adjusted. It gives me many more opportunities when I have a plan. So planning is good. There are no guarantees. Make your luck happen. Good luck

Good point about luck, I heard a saing once that luck comes knocking on everybodys door, the trick is to be home and open the door when it comes. I'm sure you get the meaning... its pretty close to the point you are making in the video.

Great insight! It’s funny, I went out at lunch for a few minutes to take my dog for a walk. Even though is a gloomy winter day, last minute I decided to bring my Z6ii and 70-200mm, “just in case”. Along the trail I came across a Red Tail hawk. So I guess another way to get lucky with capturing wildlife is to bring your camera along, even if you are just taking the dog out, lol! Thank you my friend!

In my honest opinion your best video yet. I am always thinking about luck and how important it is when it comes to bird photography. I mean, you could be best technical photographer in the world, but you have to be in the right place at the right time, else you're not going to get that special shot right? Keep up the good work, Josh.

love your videos - for the lessons, the adventures and the photos of course - - I've been birding for about 25 years now - and yes ""intuition"" plays a big part in LUCK --- and TIME in the field learning how to interpret that intuition, and be at the right place at the right time :)

It is encouraging to see you working that 500mm PF with the Z6 with such excellent results. I am loving mine but know at some point i will have to leave my DSLR behind and go mirrorless. It still puts a smile on my face to have that kind of reach with such a "small" \ manageable lens, and the optics have been terrific. I like some aspects of the Z9, but I would prefer a smaller body to go along with the smaller lens for a host of reasons.

As has been said many many times but nobody knows exactly who said it, the harder I practice the luckier I get. (Generally attributed to Gary Player but he said he got it from someone else.) It's impossible to purposefully practice intuition but the more one is out in it, the more that mysterious part of our brain develops.
