    I'm a retired newspaper photographer. Years ago I briefly considered getting into wildlife photography but a cartoon changed my mind. The cartoon showed a native American fishing from his canoe in an idyllic mountain lake. As he sits fishing he complains, "Same old rat race." I decided I never wanted to see some amazing moment in nature and think, "money shot!" Now I do it for the fun of it and if I miss "the shot" at least I saw something I probably have never seen before and learned how I can improve next time. You remind me that even if we miss a photo the real reward is the opportunity to be out there.

    I can really understand your thoughts on wanting more...First it was just a picture of a bird. Any bird. Then the birds on my Life List.
    Then a new "Lifer Bird" but I had to get an image to count it!
    Then a really creative shot of those birds.
    Then my own high-quality soundtrack of the bird call (actually easier and cheaper than I thought it would be) and now, like you, video of the whole thing! Geeze!
    Great videos and GREAT storytelling! I'm not sure I will be nearly as good as you at that!!!

    It's funny how your mind drifts off and makes you question things and adds pressure to what should be a relaxing event. I happened to bring a couple new photo's to show a friend who I team up with at least twice a week and after a third person joined us walking in the woods for a bit we went back to our cars. I showed my buddy my shots and the other gentleman loved one of them and wanted to buy it on the spot, after not responding quick enough my friend says "Sell it to him he likes it" and to make a long story short, I did. It was my first photo sale and it made me feel good a fellow photographer wanted one of my images. I have thought for years about selling prints for a fair price (no $500.00 prints in my world) but I always felt that if I got to the point to do it I would put too much pressure on myself to take pictures I think would sell vs. pictures I would take for myself and they always wouldn't be the same. If Photography started feeling like work I would end up hating it rather than loving it. So I have started to make prints of some of my work to sell on occasion but more likely give as gifts and continue to just take the shots I want. My thoughts are, if it starts feeling too much like work and you start getting irritable, time to back off and remember why you started this journey....because it made you feel good and connected you to the world in a wonderful way and the fact you have a wonderful spouse who shares you love is a big bonus. Thanks for sharing as always and take a deep breath. - Jeff

      Yes sir Jeffrey, you make some great points. Katie always warns me about turning my hobbies into jobs. Photography and videography is a strange culture in my opinion. It is one of the only hobbies where people think they need to make a living out of it. I wouldn't by a fishing boat and think of how I could make a living from fishing...although, I guess some folks do. I guess it's all about balance. it does put a lot more pressure on us when money is involved.

It’s pretty crazy how we will film like 5 hours of video and then end up with a 10-15 minute (max) video. But the hardest part is probably bringing it all together and writing the narrative. I love the snow geese. Leslie and I were at Goose Pond in Indiana a few years back. There were, according to the official count, over 100,000 there that day. There were 2 Bald Eagles in a tree not far from the pond. About every 30 minutes of so one of the Eagles would fly over them. The sky filled with geese and after a bit they settled down only to have an eagle flush them about a half hour later. Amazing memory. Thanks for bringing it back.

      That’s an awesome experience. I think the snow geese were reacting to a harrier we saw swooping around. He was giving them the heebie jeebies. We were sitting right by a tree the harrier was chilling in.

      Every lens has its strengths and weaknesses and I get what Josh says when he says his fsvorite focal length is convenience or what gets the job done. The 200-600 covers a lot of basis. I just ordered the 50 1.2 GM. Mainly because I liked the Nikon z 50 1.2 so much, but i like the size of the Sony more.

You're a great storyteller and take beautiful shots, don't get me wrong. But I think what I like the most is the fact that I can relate so much to your experiences. Enjoying the moments. Not getting the shot. Getting the shot. Struggling. Success. Thinking. Reflecting... I find that (together with your reflections and thoughts along the way) it brings me out there with you... Maybe more than watching someone always getting the most glorious photos and living the perfect adventures. It's what I do and love doing, too. Thank you so much LaKu! Your comment made me think of something. Every year, I choose a word to focus on. Words like Listen, Gratitude, Joy...This year my word is "Presence." I want to focus more on living in the moment. That may sound very easy (or very difficult) depending on current circumstances. It doesn't mean being blissfully happy 24/7. That would be great but not realistic. But when we are outside on an adventure, I try to be focused on what's happening so I can enjoy it as much as possible.

    • @laku4412
      @laku4412 2 года назад +2

      @@buttonlover86 I think "Presence" is a great word to focus on! (by the way, cool idea to choose such a word each year) Wildlife photography brought this very aspect into my life more than I could have ever imagined. I always felt like someone who's enjoying the moments and valuing being "there". But hours of sitting somewhere out in nature and trying to take myself out of the equation (to get the animals behave naturally and not disturb them) let me realize that there's whole new levels of presence to be achieved. And it swept into other aspects of my life as well. Presence makes you patient and calm... because... You don't need to be patient while you're present. The more you accept that nothing's happening and just enjoy the moment, the more you realize that there's happening a whole lot of stuff. That's what presence means to me ^^

Joshua reminds me that I struggled with it because it didn’t focus very good. But of course I don’t really remember that. Initially, the only reason I wanted a camera was so that it could help me identify birds. I wasn’t planning on actually sharing the photos but I could get home and pull it up on a computer and make it bigger and really examine the bird to identify it. Here in Oregon the snow geese usually blast off in response to an eagle flying over. Usually a bald eagle (at Klamath there are 500 bald eagles in February). I've learned to watch for the eagles so I can get ready for the blast off to come. I don't often have to wait for more than a half hour. For years I saw the geese fly up but never saw the eagle. Now I see the eagle almost every time. The eagles target the snow geese. The white-fronted geese will also fly up, but rarely get taken. The Canada geese and swans just flip the eagle off and keep feeding.

    • @buttonlover86
      @buttonlover86 2 года назад

      How funny. I would love to see birds flipping other birds off. There was a Harrier hanging around the area. He kept soaring above the pond. Those geese lifted off like 3-4 times. They didn't go far though. I was joking that they were saying, "Where the heck are we going? This is the best spot. Let's go back." That's what they appeared to be doing. They'd take off in a mad flurry, spin about and come right back. Watching them land was fun too because they seemed to have some kind of pecking order. It was like they were trying to find their favorite buddies in the crowd.

    sorry about the 2nd comment. Katie, I would advise you to not rest the 100-400 lens out past the main barrel on the window of your car. When the lens is extended, the end that telescopes out is the "weak link". It probably will never cause a problem but if the camera gets banged with the lens out like that you may be looking for a Sony Authorized Repair Center. Also, you may consider keeping a bean bag (I fill mine with sunflower seeds) in the car to rest over the window when shooting from the "mobile blind." I like sunflower seeds because if the bag were to rupture, at least the critters get a meal. Love your videos.

    I couldn't do anything with my images from my newly bought R7. I don't do Lightroom (does Katie?). I used Canon's Digital Photo Professional 4 and to look at my images I use Irfanview. No way am I going to learn Lightroom so I can use Canon's Rs. I sent back the R7 and RF 100-500 this a.m.
