I remember playing that song in a cover band when I was a kid. We practiced at the drummer's house in a shed out back. When his mom heard the screaming she immediately ran out and yelled at us to stop playing that noise 🤣
@@jonsierra723 lol that's a hilarious coincidence. This was a white lady, and she was kind of a puta...I think that's the word lol. We still played Deftones live all we wanted ;)
I remember my band went to tryout a singer and he said he could sing it but when he got to the shove it part he was breathing in and he sounded like a tyradactal rahh ssssshrove it ssshrove it
wow Taylor how can your buddy even make any money at a price of $2400 for hand made custom death metal machined like that? that thing is fucking awesome! sounds like the pickups are engineered to have the higher strings brighter than the low strings, i would lower the treble on the amp and see how it sounds, maybe break out an ep pedal? thanks for the upload. Deviant guitars are awesome!
I don't think he makes a ton off of them. As a small builder who doesn't get deep discounts for buying truckloads of materials, it's quite expensive to make these! People don't realize when they only see the price tag.
Remarkable. That price range typically gets you a typical Les Paul or a typical Jackson. Based on my ears I think Deviant has produced the world's perfect metal pickups. The guitar as a whole looks killer (like a murder weapon, as all good metal guitars should) and would do well in anyone's arsenal.
All the love for Royce and let's all wish him well on his recoup from surgery! 🥰 I'll just keep mentioning how excited I am that I have a Grimoire on order!
From a pure audio standpoint, I’m sure your amp is set up for EMG’s, but these pickups sound like they need a treble boost… and not so much a midrange cut… in fact if you went to record that in a mix, you would likely need to dump a lot of the bass range as that is overpowering the sound largely here. Of course that is genre dependent and I get that as well… if the upper range is still lacking after adjusting the amp EQ, then I’d say they need to rework the pickups again… just my unasked for 2 cents opinion 😅 On the flip side, the guitar seems to be a decent chugger for sure …
Taylor, weird! I just had a really great conversation with Mr. Royce yesterday afternoon, so it's strange that you post this today. I was asking him for some advice concerning the business end of being a builder of this wonderful instrument. I've only built a couple at this point and played guitar since I was 8 & I'm 45 now but I am really enjoying building these things so I'm looking at cnc options, sales platforms, and that wonderful man (Royce) not only answered all of my questions but had some fantastic advice concerning custom jobs, production runs and such. Anyway, Mr. Taylor, you are the reason I know anything about Royce and Deviant Guitars, so wanted to drop in and thank you for promoting his awesome work. The Grimoire design you two came up with is probably my #1 absolute favorite guitar design ever. And I've been looking at designs for nearly 5 decades now, so I've seen a lot of crazy designs. It's just the perfect balance of simple quality instrument and lucifers cockeyed wang pointy mayhem-ness? Lol not sure where that came from but hey it works. Anyways, nice review as always, when you first pulled the guitar out I was cussing you saying, " damn it Taylor hold the fucking thing still so I can see it!!!" Lmao great video sir. Take care.
Thanks dude, I really appreciate the comment. I'll try and hold the guitar more still next time... at least I gave you some sexy slow motion shots though..
The sound it seemed a little flat, but sharp, which I like. It does sound like my solar pickups. You can shape your sound, not too voiced. Great guitar!
Really loving all I've seen of these guitars. Does anyone know how to calculate the cost of importing one to the UK?? So total cost, purchase of guitar and import stuff
I believe the UK charges 20% VAT. Shipping is around $150. Puts you just over $3000 to your door at list price. This guitar will be discounted when it finds its way back to me.
I've had my Reaper for nearly 3 years, and even as one of Royce's early models, I still absolutely love it. I would love to check out a Reaper with some of the Heathen pickups. Especially if he has something similar to an X2N pickup.
How would you describe the neck profile? Is it more of a U, thin-U, C, thin-C, ultra-thin flat, etc... If anyone has a Deviant guitar please respond with some info about the neck profile. If possible, please provide a comparison. I'm really digging the Leviathan, but the neck is without question the most important aspect as to whether I love or hate a guitar.
But Glenn Fricker says there is absolutely no difference between pickups and if there is it can't be heard by the human ear. Your comparison between passive and active proved him instantly wrong.
I find almost any builder that makes their own pickups to be lacking compared to using the big names in pickup mfg. I swap out 99% of the pickups in my guitars for this reason - perhaps this guitar needs a more balanced eq frequency pickup and less output.
We do offer 5 different models of pickups to choose from with more in development. And on a custom order guitar you’re always welcome to choose what pickups you want. The Valkyrie is my Swiss Army knife of pickups, good for rock, most metal, pop etc. I do offer several others that are geared more towards extreme death tones.
Taylor, you might be interested in analyzing the DI signal of EMGs vs passives. The clipping going on with 9V EMGs is wild. Straight up square waves coming out of them. Slam a big add9 power chord on EMGs and do the same on passives and take a look at that DI. I was an EMG dude for my whole life until I saw that. I can send you pics of my own tests if you want to save time.
Just add 24Vs and it's fixed. I did that and I only get clipping if I try for it. I heard the X models are like 24Vs increased headroom, but never used one
So… you liked using EMG’s and how they sounded, but after looking at a DI signal you suddenly disliked them? How did that happen? Not being an ass, just curious since I hardy ever record anything myself.
@@jackbootshamangaming4541 the EMG x models are extremely meh, imo. I liked the concept, but they remove the active sound essence from the pickup, and you're just left with a very vanilla sounding pickup. Standard EMGs with higher voltages sound much better than X series pickups, imo.
That is such a sick looking guitar, Royce has definitely got chops
My own summer Deftones huh your approved by me😊

This is true! I own the red one. Much like what you did with your Grimoire neck, I would prefer more personally.

Defintely do not see a Strat style guitar.....not even close.
Dunno what you're looking at then. It's clearly inspired by a strat shape.
My take on a strat style body shape. Kind of general term everyone uses for a double horn guitar I think.
I was wondering why it sounds like Solar?I have Solar. And this is not the best sound ever. But guitar looks good.
