The thing not mentioned here is that German Shepherds used today are brought in from Germany. American German Shepherds have had too many show qualities bred into them to be useful as military or police dogs. The Malinois is bred for the qualities they need. I have met and officer and the Malinois he is training. Simply awesome dog.
If you look at photographs of American GSDs from the 1930's through 1950's they resembled today's Malinois. They had much straighter, longer legs and were far more athletic than the 'show shepherd' of the modern age. They were also a bit lighter as a general rule. In selecting the Malinois as the new war dog our military is really returning to what had worked in the past. The Malinois is an exceptionally athletic animal with a high prey drive that makes them perfect as police and war dogs.
As a follow-up I'd like to point out that European nations generally have much stricter rules and regulations regarding the breeding of purebred dogs. In Germany, for instance, I've heard that all breedings must be approved by a licensed veterinarian. We have no such control over breeding here in the USA. When it comes to working breeds---GSD, Dobermans, Giant Schnauzers, Rottweilers, etc---you can still find high quality working stock animals from European bloodlines. In America the show circuit people have bred the working types into non-existence in favor of "fashionable" pretty dogs that are generally unable to perform their original functions. At present the Belgian Malinois is the least corrupted of the working/shepherding breeds from Europe, as it has only had AKC registration for a relatively short time. I maintain that a good working quality Doberman Pinscher is one of the finest breeds for military and police work. In WWII the US Marine Corps adopted the Doberman as their official war dog for use in the Pacific Theater of the war where the hot tropical climate was too hard on the heavy coated German Shepherds. They performed outstandingly well and were credited with having saved a lot of American lives. Units with at least one Doberman were said to have never suffered an ambush from the enemy, as the dogs could detect the Japanese if they got within half a mile of the Marines.
geriatricsanatore Well what I had heard was that a litter could not be registered in Germany unless a licensed veterinarian had approved the breeding. If that is not the case, that is something I'm sorry to hear because I think it would be a good idea in any country as a means of discouraging indiscriminate breeding.
It breaks my heart when I hear that these war dogs, regardless of which conflict, are left behind. These dogs have just as much bonding to "their humans" (handlers) as the soldier has bonded with the dog. Can you imagine having to say goodbye and watch the poor dog try to come along with them as they had done so many times only to be pushed back. I'm sure that poor dog was bewildered as to why his buddy was leaving without them, to fend for themselves. Many of them starve or end up being eaten by the peasants. Maybe some of the soldiers put the dog down knowing what the dog's fate was feeling this was the most humane thing to do. Vietnam was the proving ground for so many things that the military and the government did wrong, including how they treat these bonifide K9 soldiers. Today these dogs are given one rank higher than their handlers to ensure that the dogs are not mistreated, many of the handlers adopt their dogs when they go home. I love seeing that recognition and respect given to these unsung heroes both in the military and law enforcement.
I have a Czech GSD. She is fiercely loyal, obedient and I have no doubt would give her life to protect mine. I never take her for granted. She is above and beyond all that I sought in a canine companion. I salute her on a daily basis as I do all military dogs... In God We Trust.
These dogs are truly amazing! I once spoke to a person who was in the military in another country before moving to Canada and he worked with dogs trained to go into dangerous areas and the dogs took direction by radios attached to the gear they wore. Dogs are awesome creatures!
yeah that's really cold, enraging and haunting; you'd think their handlers woulda tried to get them back...I hope they managed to find homes over there....
Unlikely, dogs are considered unclean in their culture to they won't ever be living inside a person's home, they will end up being strays roaming the streets, getting food from the rubbish. They are considered soldiers when they are useful but easy to throw away once they don't need them anymore.
More proof that dogs (give and take... depending on breed) are much more smarter/intelligent than most of us may think they are. Nice video (+ great music selection for this video)... Hooyah!
A lot of the information in this video is incorrect and clearly written (other than the obvious spelling) by someone NOT familiar with the U.S. Military. The U.S. Military does NOT treat their MWDs as "full soldiers", they are still declared equipment and are declared as "excess" although they are not left overseas anymore. They also do not pull out dogs teeth to replace them with titanium ones, I have seen one, and that's because he broke his canine and needed a replacement.
That guy jumping out of the plane with his dog at the end... actually not a Navy SEAL but an Austrian soldier, somewhere above Norway during Cold Response 2010.
Malinois, “…often referred to as "German Shepherds on Crack" because they have that go-go-go personality, tons of drive, and tend to spend a good portion of their lives hanging from something by their teeth…” xD
:( So heartbreaking knowing that the military gives little care towards these dogs once they are injured or unable to continue the mission. Just like Airmen, Soldiers and Sailors. They are disregarded like some four year old does to a broken toy.
Sam these brave animals are well taken care of after they are injured or no longer able to function as a combat dog. Many times the original handler is granted custody of the combat dog. There is a skilled Veterinarian on every forward operating base for the animals medical needs. They are fed premium animal food and are warriors in there own way. These combat dogs have saved many human life's. There is also a long waiting list of Servicemen who want to adopt these brave animals.
Sam you do not know how wrong you are, these dogs are treated with care and love, these dogs even while injured or unfit to fight are highly coveted and there is a long waiting list. Lucky to even get one.
Raul Ortega Sorry to break it to you.... But over a year ago a video on You Tube.. Belgian Malinois about to be Abandoned Overseas... might make you want to rethink thought.... I have a guy on there ... I replied to.... you should read his thoughts on the subject... I guess he thinks now people don't appreciate what our Soldiers do in the military...because we care... about mere dogs.
Here is the truth about K-9 tooth implants. It's yes and no. Meaning that the dogs teeth are replaced by titanium implants only if their natural teeth get broken off. No, they don't remove the dogs natural teeth if they're in good shape just to implant the titanium. Also, you would never know if the dog has implants or not as they are have been coated to look like natural teeth...
I have removed and replaced teeth for military and prison dogs!!! There is no law that says the teeth need to be bad.. its simply the choice of the handler to get it done...
As a former military K9 handler maybe I can clear up the titanium teeth thing. Various military K9's have the canine teeth replaced with titanium teeth, but only when the dog breaks a tooth. They are NOT done just for the sake of replacing the teeth.
The malinois and dutch shepherd are definitely the cream of the crop, I own, train and sell mals, dutchs, and gsd's but my personal dogs are mals n dutchs. Great video
is it true they replace their teeth with titanium implants? There's a video of an elite dog trainer that shows the dogs teeth that were titanium implants
I saw a comment made, by someone who claimed familiarity with military K9's, that some dogs are given titanium teeth but it doesn't increase bite strength and is only to replace damaged teeth so the dogs can still eat etc
That doesn't mean it's right, that "elite" dog trainer who put the titanium implants on his dogs incisors is dumb, enamel is harder than titanium. I could see replacing the incisor if it broke in the field but other than that it's just a useless gimmick.
+rgman2858 Why would they? In Cpl Mark Donaldson VC book Crossroad, he describes an attack on a Taliban fighter where the Combat Dog " Devil" broke the fighters arm. Devil was a Belgian Malinois.
Humans can't do better than evolution. Teeth over metal any day. Humans can never beat nature, can we make an exoskeleton that lifts 800 times our weight easily? Nope but beetles can. Can we controls millions of robots to do tasks in perfect synchronisation with absolute precision? Nope, but ants can. Can we produce something as tough as spider silk? Nope. Can we detect a person or anything with an electrical current hundreds of miles away instantly and pinpoint its exact location and sense what it's going to do next? Nope, a shark can. I can go on and on about this
Smart pooches, they have more balls and courage than some humans. Clever dogs, I'm looking to buy one but ain't sure if I would be able to train one as a first time dog/owner. Any recommendations would be appreciated from people who own dogs. Thanks
kɨtsuɴe Thanks for reply, I think GSD are more chilled out from what I seen. The Malinios are more hyper active and need a proper trainer. Never mind I will keep on dreaming GS. Peace
A Mahmood Yeah Malinois are such beautiful dogs and awesome companions when you know how to train them, and real working dogs that need to have a job to do. I'd love to have one too but I just can't afford the time.
They should do this when they are still ALIVE! But that's a mans unfaithful ❤ They never know Faithful And True until they lose one WHO🦉 is🐾🐾 Done watching and listening
Yes..Dogs do have titanium teeth replacements, but only when their original teeth are broken...they do not hurt the dog...Plenty of dog that i know of have these
Just remember if buying a German shepherd get the native version with the primitive lineage. Do not support the sale of the mutants they now call German shepherds that suffer dearly for what some stupid breeders think looks appealing.
I want to be a K-9 when I grow up.

"All I ask for is fricking dogs with laser beams attached to their heads!"

JackKangaroo1 you heard wrong about the breeding in Germany, I'm German we don't have laws against breeding dogs.

German Shepherds from Germany? Are you sure? How do you know this?
My service dogs saved me from a fire, tore my back door off to get me out. I had no clue that I was about to die. They're my heros.
Do these soldiers have to get a 5 kill streak first?
no they got them in a care pack
wallas10 nope mystery box

ABSOLUTELY 💯!!! FJB
I had a German Shepard growing up as a boy. The most faithful companion I've ever known, saved my little sisters life
God Bless Cairo Thank You for Your Service Amen
DOG = Loyalty, purity of heart, fiercely brave!
The thought of Cujo cornering Osama Bin Laden and hearing that high pitched Wilhelm scream brings a smile to my face.
He didn't corner him

4TheRecord Or being eateñ by the people.
So the k-9s were treated the same way the US govt treats human soldiers....
I love these loyal devoted working dogs.
Great respect 🕊️
Hollywood should make more action, adventure comedy movies about the relationship of service dogs and their companion
Take that, cats.
This is extremely intelligent. Thank you for sharing, loved watching this!
Its wrong btw
More proof that dogs (give and take... depending on breed) are much more smarter/intelligent than most of us may think they are.
Nice video (+ great music selection for this video)... Hooyah!
I don't know why, but I find the idea of parachuting dogs to be hilarious
This video has proved that dogs are our best friends. Thanks for this lovely video.

Taliban biden called the k9's baggage. Left them behind in Afghanistan. FJB AND. HIS 10 SUPPORTERS!!
That guy jumping out of the plane with his dog at the end... actually not a Navy SEAL but an Austrian soldier, somewhere above Norway during Cold Response 2010.
I'd be a terrible dog handler. I'd just want to scratch him behind the hears. The dog. Not the handler.
Lol I was like, ummm ok, awkward
They have off time
“I will send them without wings so no one knows they are angels”
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing this!
May God bless ALL of our service personal
Indeed our pets are the member of our family... Dogs mans best friend... Tribute to the K-9 officers :-)

dad da and implants of any kind, titanium or ceramic are weaker than natural teeth. Caps are stronger if you still have a tooth.
dad da Whatever you say, dog tooth dentist.
What I find amazing about Belgian Malinois is the way they can jump great hights like fence or walls! 😮
i think a body armored dog sprinting in my direction would make me shit my pants.
Not only do these Special K9 make my dog look bad, but they also make me look bad. lol
I love your screen name: I am nude.

Thank you for your service!

i didnt see any mountain dew i was promised there would be mountain dew

I was so disgusted when I read after Vietnam they were treated as surplus and left :/ so sad
Yea,
Sh4tterdL0g1c Yeah that was the case in after the Vietnam war...But a lot of MWDs are adopted by their handlers during the post 9/11 conflicts.
That dog aint catchin Usain Bolt
I gotta Greyhound from the pound that will smoke Bolt like a Boss
Like Bolt would do any crimes...
But he might actually be able to if a domestic CAT can sprint out Usain Bolt. (True Fact)
BRAVERY/ RAW COURAGE AND EXTREME LOYALTY BROUGHT TO YOU BY GOD ALMIGHTY

Their are so many things you can train a dog to do. The rapid expansion of the assistance dog programs here in holland show that.
GOD BLESS OUR K9 HEROES 🙏🇺🇸👍🙏🇺🇸👍 LOVE THEM ALL ❤️️🙏❤️️🙏❤️️🙏
Great respect from 🇵🇱🕊️🤝
" I never saw a wild thing that felt sorry for it self."
Whoooo rrawww......finally....great vid to our k9 brothers......God bless.....them.....
where can I purchase this gear for my havanese dog?
I knew police dogs were cool, but I didn't know there was such a thing as Spec Ops Seal Dogs like holy shit they're badass lol
the titanium tooths are not to scare but to enable the dog to bite through thick clothes or light body armor.
Good job Cairo
In War or Peacetime. Man's best friend!
Thank you all. and thank you for telling #MWD Cairo s story
Thanks for the great video! Nice!
Smart pooches, they have more balls and courage than some humans. Clever dogs, I'm looking to buy one but ain't sure if I would be able to train one as a first time dog/owner. Any recommendations would be appreciated from people who own dogs. Thanks
I never had a Malinois or GSD but by what I heard Malinois are a bit more stubborn and GSDs are easier to train
kɨtsuɴe Thanks for reply, I think GSD are more chilled out from what I seen.
Read puppy training by the monks of new Skete and they may have more books about puppy training by now.
A M I’ve heard the same. The bummer is that the German shepherd has many health problems.
PLEASE WHAT IS THIS MUSIC FROM?!
This “video” felt like an ad to me.
Can you tell me the music behind the story,it gives it UMPH
I salute the soldier dog.
God BLESS!
0:30 I bet 80 navy seals might disagree, they are nothing like German shepherds
What song is this? I kinda like it :)
can you identify the music? thanks.
so the whole thing turned out to be an advert? nice...
I from the uk but danm you know how to train good dogs
we have the same dogs in the UK . fantastic dogs who do a very important job
Jack Mears me too but not for war . Strictly love and hearing service.
Salute....
They should do this when they are still ALIVE!
But that's a mans unfaithful ❤
They never know Faithful And True until they lose one WHO🦉 is🐾🐾
Done watching and listening
My doberman cost $250 and he could bring me my shoes. And a host of useful tasks.
Yes..Dogs do have titanium teeth replacements, but only when their original teeth are broken...they do not hurt the dog...Plenty of dog that i know of have these
these are the advanced models, K-10s
Can someone tell me the name of the music being used in the video? It sounds like something from the Modern Warfare 2 soundtrack.
An answer please :(
Ok, after a awkward conversation with Siri I found the song. Eagle Eye by Brian Tyler.
Success!!
seal k9's were replaced with titanium, is nearly painless to them. come in very handy.
All though long ago, no dog is ‘surplus’
How much room would it have taken up to bring the K9’s home. What a sad fate for them.
Wow awesome dogs
I won't say that the Belgian Malinois is similar to the German Shepherd.
Me: Yay cute military dogs!!
*Sees that you have to read*
Me: Clicks off
Oh now a dog cornered ol bin? Wow this story just keeps getting better and better.
I salute these dogs by saying you're a good boy.
Vietnam war. Damn another thing that sucks, they left the dogs ( FAMILY ) there. I'd say dog or cat part of the team.
They do replace some teeth with a titanium tooth
No
@@MrDbro94 Ok
Just remember if buying a German shepherd get the native version with the primitive lineage. Do not support the sale of the mutants they now call German shepherds that suffer dearly for what some stupid breeders think looks appealing.
they should use timberwolves. They are even stronger and faster, but the only problem would be that they're much harder to train^^
And they eat kids…….
Alex Dunbar of CQB K9 LLC has a couple dogs with titanium teeth.
even i dont want to go parachuting!
