The Dark and Tragic Story of Christian Elder

- Christian Elder was in a horrible crash in practice for the 2002 Busch Series race at Chicagoland. The impact completely flattened the side of his car, and this picture showcases one of the most brutal crashes I have ever seen. Christian was cited with a concussion and a broken collarbone. However, five years later, he tragically passed away in his home. The scary and unfortunate thing is that his death directly leads back to this very wreck. It is mysterious to me because he was dealing with the pain of this wreck five years after the fact, which leads me to believe Christian was dealing with more than just a concussion or broken bone.

Hey guys - I just wanted to touch on the methadone topic for one final point. Yes, it is primarily used for addicts to get off of substances. However, smaller doses of methadone can be used to treat pain. It used to be much more common now, hence why it might sound a little weird (I though so, too). Anyways, a quick google search could answer that but I just wanted to share it here.
Also, there was no evidence Christian was on drugs, so I didn’t even want to include that into the video. Thanks!
Whilst it is likely complications might have arisen from the combination of injuries from the two accidents mentioned in the video, it is important to bear in mind pain is a perception. You are right to highlight most drivers (and athletes, and in fact people in general) will not require analgesic medication for years, and will return to pre-injury form. Often though, there are circumstances than lead to addiction of medication, and it is possible this was the case here.
Without speculating, it is entirely possible that just the right - or rather wrong - chain of events led from what should be acute use of analgesics to chronic use. Social situations, mental health and wellbeing, a less prosperous outlook of a career and even poor medical advice can all play a role in the longevity of treatment. I would imagine a combination of these are a more likely scenario than major inaccuracies in the injuries reported at the time. Five years is a long time to be taking analgesics. He may have been taking methadone to manage prescribed opioid addiction. Addiction doesn't always look like an explicit problem. Opioids can be horrible drugs.
My point is this can happen to anyone. There's no shame in it.
It is a good long term pain medication, because it doesn't have to dependency risks associated with many other natural and synthetic opioids, it does however have the same effect if taken in an overdose - that is respiratory depression/failure - as other medical and street narcotics. It has fallen out of favor for this purpose today because of other available options. It would mean that he was in chronic pain, likely he was hurt worse than reported???
@@csykes23 well stated and you made some very good and reasonable points.
It seems that they always say Methadone but then they add mixing medications. I broke my back and 10 years later shattered my heel. I have been on Methadone. It does wonders for chronic pain and is nothing like the other painkillers they want you on. When I first started I was told this “ DO NOT TAKE XANAX OR BARBITURATES. THEY WILL KILL YOU.” So he may have also been depressed not driving in NASCAR anymore. But who knows. So I don’t think it was the Methadone that killed him. Probably all the other stuff they add on. Doctors are not your friends.

Everytime I see that wreck at Chicagoland, it feels like my spine had snapped into two pieces. I'll never forget Christian Elder. Rest in piece.
I have seen that wreck a hundred times in crash compilations and never knew Christian Elder passed away because of this crash, albeit years later. May he rest in peace.
Keep up the good work NFJJ!
Well he technically passed away from an overdose. His death was related to his accident but the accident wasn't a direct cause. It was an indirect cause of his death.
Addiction as a result of pain management for the injuries from the wreck . RIP... Cuz...😢
@@randyelder5802 thats how most people get started. It's how I got hooked. Similar story to Christian's is the story of Eric McClure. 2 people who went through bad health problems after sustaining life altering injuries in bad crashes... crashes that ultimately were directly responsible for their deaths many years later. RIP both...
That is very true. The only difference is Eric actually had some preexisting issues with his health that exacerbated the problem. Both suffered tragically though.
I was a Grand National (now Cup) crew member back in the 70's. Many times I've told people that just because you see a guy walk away from a wreck it doesn't necessarily mean "he's okay". Fans never get to see these guys the day after, when even after what is considered a routine wreck, these guys are stiff and sore and often times visibly affected. Sure, in most cases, they're fine in a week but the hits they take, especially big hits like Elder's, can be felt for years to come.
I feel like this point has just been proven this week
That was a giant hit!
Safer barriers have saved the lives of just about every driver in the Cup Series today!
Seen that kind of wreck over and over and have never seen that kind of damage, always wondered if their was something off structurally with his car in specific
I've thought the same, that side caved I'm too much based off the angle. Only thing I can contribute to it would be speed. When he corrected the car and it shot up the track, he was still on the pedal. Maybe that added drive into the wall made it worse.........my 2 cents
Seems similar to the Grant adcox crash at Michigan but, Grant's car wasn't nearly as damaged. Ur right, Christian's car looks more beat up than it should...
I think thats pre safer barrier i may be wrong, but i think thats all concrete.

Great video dude. Wanted to know more about this topic and you delivered it 👍
Your approach to these dark and difficult subjects is always tasteful and respectful, and for that I thank you.
I injured my neck in late 2019 and I've had painful headaches on the side of my injury since. Feel bad for people who have to deal with neverending pain.
Dude when you break your neck or back you're in Pain for the rest of your life, it's a whole different ballgame from breaking a leg or arm.
I agree. I've had 3 lower back surgeries for ruptured disc's & now facing my 2nd neck surgery. A back or neck injury not only affects those 2 parts, but also causes pain in your hips & legs. Your neck problem can affect your shoulders & arms. It kills me to hear all these internet doctors comment to anyone in constant pain as druggies. Back problems don't go away after a few weeks like a broken arm or leg.
Agreed a herniated disk and you're pretty much in pain from then on.
Got the F'd up C6 - C7 surgery T shirt. 17 years later it's shall we say limiting on activity.
Currently dealing with 3 herniated disc's and I'm so sick of pills and pt. Because of my "young age" no neurosurgeon wants to do anything, but my pain is getting worse day by day. I've been called every drug addiction name in the book, but I refuse to actually take any narcotics
@@johnsonjeremiah74 I had my 1st back surgery when I had just turned 20 years old. I'm 53 now & facing my 2nd neck surgery, 5th surgery over all. I still worked 2 jobs until I finally filed for disability at age 37. Now I'm classified as "lazy" by some. People are gonna talk no matter what you do or don't do. I swear it seems like some are jealous because I no longer work. But I'd give anything to work & make decent money again. Whether you take pain medicine or not people will think that you do. If you do take pain meds then take the least amount to get you by. I've almost stopped taking everything except Celebrex & a muscle relaxer & I feel almost the same. Pain meds don't really make the pain go away, they just make you feel better & help you cope with it. But people will continue to think whatever they want.
Sad to hear. I always got him and F1-Euro driver Christian Albers mixed up. RIP.
Sad to hear that a Nascar driver from my home state had died. That sucks.
To me its crazy that at 7:34 the article states that he'd passed away at the age of 38 quite bone chilling that he passed away at the age of his former busch series car number, may Christian Elder Rest in peace in the heavens above
Raced late models and 4cylinder modified class with him and his brother at raceway park and Elko speedway. Super competitive guy. Great Racer.
A long time ago I worked the medical crew at Elko, MN race track. I had a passing acquaintance with the Elder-Jones racing team. Chris was very competitive in his Force 4 race car, but often ignored the safety personnel (me) because he just wanted to get back on the track and race. I give him his due, posthumously, and offer condolences to his family.
Keep up the awesome videos
I never knew he passed away
R.I.P.
Thank you. Great video. Sad tragedy
Clearly he was still injured after the Fontana wreck and the the Chicagoland wreck reaggravated the injuries causing him even worse pain
I did a video on Christian Elder a while back on a whim. I had a feeling that my video influenced this one.
There are some good points regarding the Methadone mystery. I educatedly guessed he was prescribed it after 2003 after he retired from racing. Taking it 5 years after Chicagoland could mean a number a things. Some speculated a drug addiction because of the most common reason Methadone is prescribed. But the fact it can be prescribed for intense pain is why I don't buy that theory. We have seen instances of drivers dealing with pain from injuries & crashes long after their careers ended. And like with Christian, they can end tragically.
He definitely returned way too soon from the neck injury. He said he was shooting to be back in September of 2002. That would have been 4 months. Seeing the quotes from articles from my own research, I wonder (& fear) if he felt pressure to constantly perform for Akins & Great Clips & not disappoint them despite their assurance & well-wishes. This was 2002, & drivers did feel that type of pressure... Look at Dale Jr. that year.
I remember there was talk about Christian in the same context as Dale's accident. That the injury he sustained at Lowes was as close (but) to a side neck break as you can possibly get.
It's hard to say what happened to Christian but I'll say this. I've seen people get addicted to pain medication such as Vicodin or methadone after minor injuries such as a sprained ankle. A close family member I was visiting told me he had been tired and felt weak , basically sick for the past week. After some discussion I found out that he had taken Vicodin for several days following a broken arm. He transitioned to Tylenol and that's when the sickness began. He had unknowingly became addicted to the narcotics. Dr hadn't warned him and he had no clue, just thought he was sick or something until I realized what happened. Thankfully he never touched another painkiller. Unfortunately, well before that time when a close friend was a young man, he injured his back and was bedridden for 2 weeks & was placed on painkillers. By the time he knew how addictive they were, it was too late. A lifelong addiction started out like that. He had never done any type of drug and suddenly he's seriously addicted. That was 30 years ago, he's a functioning addict now, and I'm glad he's still with us. In any case, Its very likely that Christian was given painkillers as a result of an injury and that led to his eventual death. It's very common and people are prescribed narcotics for much less than the injuries he suffered. Christian was a talented driver and a nice guy. If not for the bad luck, it's very possible that he would have been a cup driver competing with Jeff Gordon and Dale Jr. He was that good. He was almost there when his Nascar career ended.
82G's !?! Considering Romain Grosjean's huge F1 crash was 52G's, it is crazy this dude even survived an 82G impact alone. May he Rest in Peace
I think it has a lot to do with the direction and duration of the force. Kenny Brack survived a 214G crash because the 214G came from his car spinning and only lasted a tiny fraction of a second. If you drive straight into a wall hard enough to cause that same g-force through pure linear motion, you’d probably have to be going above the speed of sound and would be literally vaporized (think Mythbusters rocket sled). Instead the car going from travelling straight forward to spinning is what causes the g-force, and while still extremely dangerous it’s more survivable than other ways of achieving the same g-force
Make you wonder what Elliott Sadlers Pocono hit was in G force. NASCAR never released, to my knowledge, only thing I've heard was from Elliott himself when he said NASCAR told him it was the hight G Gorce number they ever recorded. Triple digits maybe?
I didn’t know a thing about him but it’s sad to hear that he passed away 😢
@NFJJ Methadone can be used to help patients come off of other narcotics mostly to help addicts with the withdrawal symptoms. Also symptoms of concussions can last a day , a month, 1 year, 5 years or even permanent. Combine those symptoms with the herniated disc and thats where chronic pain comes into the equation.
Yes, it can. There was just no evidence that Christian ever used drugs. However, there were multiple sources that said he was prescribed the pills as a result of his wreck. So I decided against bringing that point up in that video- I just didn’t want to make any assumptions. Thanks for the comment.
Honestly sounds like he was prescribed opiates and ended up addicted. Methadone is used for opiate withdrawal management and not as a pain treatment. Hate to speculate, though.
It used to be given for pain management not many years ago. Currently, I'm due for a hip replacement. I was prescribed opiates for many years because I was young enough that they didn't want to replace it yet. I've stayed off of opiates for years now and just manage with ibuprofen, steroid injections, etc. Now that I'm 40 they are considering finally replacing it. In the meantime, my doctor suggested just last week that I consider methadone if it won't be replaced soon because I've told him that I don't want the opiates in the meantime unless I need them for a short time after surgery. I know people with very serious pain issues, most due to cancer, who receive methadone for pain combined with other stuff. Even just a few years ago, people in my area could get a 30 day supply of them every month to get off of heroin or other pills without having to go daily like so many clinics. A lot has changed in recent years after the whole pill mill crisis and whatnot though.
That Akins Great Clips 38 is iconic. Kahne, Leffler, AJ Foyt IV, etc. RIP Christian Elder and Jason Leffler
Wow did not know Christian passed away. GOD BLESS him.
In a way that reminds me of Salt Walther, who was involved in that horrific crash at the start of the horrific 1973 Indy 500. It didn't end his career, but he became addicted to pain medication afterwards, and led to his early death, decades after the crash.
So interesting very good video
Back pain is no joke. I've considered methadone because my back won't stop hurting, and not just sore it's i can't walk pain.
Ditto that. Epidurals are also an option believe it or not!
It's the only pain meds I've found that works & with no adverse reactions. Plus your body doesn't gain a tolerance for it over time like shorter term pain meds. So whatever amount works for you now will work long term. But of coarse it has a bad name because many people don't know it can be used for chronic pain. Find the smallest dosage that works for you & never, and I mean NEVER take more than that. Because it's hell to back off of .
What a really hard hit
RIP Jason Leffler who was also in the 38

As someone who has had that same injury I find it hard to believe just driving the car wouldn't have aggravated it, let alone all the crashes. I only driving a big rig and my neck kills me most days.
Herniated disc can cause major issues with age and further injury. I am a spinal cord patient as well and nearly died from morphine toxicity. Pain and side effects had me forget Injad already taken a dose and doubled it. I may have done this twice. It is easy when you lose you mind. And this pain and lack of sleep can do that. RIP brother.

Wow I have a die-cast of his 14 great clips car. It was given to me by a great clips employee who was a family friend. I was really young back then and didn't care much about anything other than Jeff Gordon. What an eye opener about the driver of the car I've had for years but never knew anything about! Sad ending though. RIP
I watched one of his SCCA races just the other day. Apparently his Great Clips Mazda Protege touring car was for sale a few years ago.
They wouldn't have prescribed him methadone unless he was already prescribed to, addicted to, and had a tolerance to opiate and/or opioid pain killers. On top of that almost all deaths from methadone come from mixing methadone with benzodiazepines like Xanax (pronounced zanex), or klonopin, and also mixing it with alcohol. While methadone is occasionally given just for pain relief, it is normally prescribed to people who have already become addicted to other opiate or opioid pain killers and who need the pain relief, but dont want the euphoria (the high) associated with normal narcotic pain relievers. Sadly, methadone has a really bad reputation, between older folks getting confused by the "meth" part of the name, and people dying after mixing them with stuff like downers or alcohol has really led to it having a bad reputation. The most famous person I know of who was prescribed methadone was President John F. Kennedy, he had alot of health issues including alot of back pain and other pain. I myself have been prescribed methadone for about 12 and a half years, and for me it has worked wonders.
It's helped many people that I've known over the years, but unfortunately a few of them did just what you mentioned and mixed it with Xanax, sometimes prescribed by the same providers, and that was the end of them.
Great video. Methadone is prescribed for opiate dependence as a treatment drug. You have to be in a treatment program. Very rare to OD from without combination with depressants or alcohol. It does make you more active so you could have a heart attack, but it wouldn't be from the methadone.
Times have changed. It wasn't many years ago that plenty of doctors in my area prescribed it for pain, and even the people who were getting it in order to get off of heroin only had to go to the doctor once a month, pee in a cup, and walk out with a 30 day prescription.
Well not all broken bones are created equal. I broke my clavicle,a very short clean break and it healed up like nothing ever happened. I also had a lineal 5th metatarsal break and that thing has caused me discomfort for the past 5 years. It totally changed my lifestyle. In some ways I wish I had lost my entire foot. At least I could get back to hiking and jogging again.
I broke both collar bones in the same spot. One still hurts over 25 years later, the other only hurt when I broke it and when the Dr reset it. 😅

Broken bones and bodies don't heal the same for everyone. I bent my wrist into a pretzel 20+ years ago and it's still swollen to this day. Add to that 3 cracked vertebrae, broken ankle, torn up knees, a brain aneurysm, something called Trigeminal neuralgia, multiple concussions and cracking my first two motorcycle helmets before I was 20 and I'm lucky I even remember who I am. If you or someone you care about gets a concussion a few days off is not the answer. I've had 7 MRI's, I know all about it.

Didn't Eric McClure crash indirectly lead to his passing
Yep ... 9 years after the fact and... I would say that Eric McClure's horror crash was directly to blame for his passing. The fact that McClure survived the crash is a miracle... it was a way worse crash than Christian Elder's crash. Mind you, Elder's crash was a hard lick but, probably not career ending to a healthy driver...
I’m no doctor but have quite a few years in critical care and play like one, so just at a quick glance and looking the impact and injury I would make this general statement. If someone receives a traumatic injury to the spinal cord they are going to be in pain for the rest of their lives. Imagine every time you take a step, hold you child, hug your wife, bend down to get the keys you dropped, lighting and fire down your back and into your legs. Now imagine climbing into a race car with little suspension for vertical movement, guess where he is going to experience the most pain? Doing what he loved, methadone is used for LONG TERM TREATMENT OF PAIN. It is used for addiction treatment but it is also used for patient who physicians know is going to be in pain long term. The alternative is being on OxyContin or fentanyl patches for the rest of your life, it is possible that he took other meds and accidentally overdosed. Hell three beers, his normal meds and taking a sleeping pill (which I would bet he was on) and your body forgets to breath.
Doctors do not prescribe methadone for pain methadone is prescribed for opioid withdrawal such as pain pills same as Suboxone
Methadone can be used for pain
Pharmacy tech here. Methadone actually is used for pain relief, at smaller doses than are used for opioid withdrawal. Methadone isn’t prescribed as much today due to its side effects but in the 2000s it was prescribed fairly frequently for pain along with other opioids like Darvon and Demerol. It has a long duration of action which is why it was attractive for chronic pain like what Christian Elder was experiencing.
such a tragedy but man he had some cool paint schemes
Let’s take the case of Dick trickle And salt walther had to deal with pain after racing career was over
My father passed away from methadone mixed with anti- depressants. 2006
We need to take care of our health.
I have an uncle that died from methadone toxicity!! That’s a really nice way of saying someone overdosed. The problem with methadone is that it’s extremely addictive, much like heroin the drug it was designed to help combat. The problem is that almost every person prescribed methadone for chronic pain will become dependent. Because methadone has no opioid antagonist properties, the more of it you use the higher you get! Unfortunately if I had to explain the likely causes for Christians death it would probably be a story that starts with him having a lot of chronic pain and at some point the intensity of drugs being used to treat that pain graduated to methadone. Methadone is a very strong opioid and is generally used to combat heroin addiction, not chronic pain!! With that said I would say he became highly addicted to methadone and started using larger doses than prescribed which eventually led to him suffering a fatal overdose.
Sad story I had no idea of this happening. I do know methadone is used to help folks with addictions to opioids. Many times they remain on methadone indefinitely because it acts in the same way as the opioid drug but it is legally prescribed by a doctor. This may be the sad case of a physician prescribing an addictive drug instead of using an alternative way to treat the pain. Many people have been prescribed drugs like this and it put great people in bad places. It is terrible he suffered that accident while he was still recovering and also terrible they prescribed methadone for pain management.
Methadone is also what they prescribe if you are a heroin addict so he may have had a problem with other drugs as well.
I broke my collar bone after a fall from a 75' cliff. Coma for 24 days. After I awoke and still in the hospital I broke it again pushing myself in a wheelchair, it didn't hurt and I didn't tell anyone just continued with therapy learning everything all over again. That was 35 years ago. Collar bone bone still misshapen and never had pain from it. While in coma I wasn't allowed to any opioids for pain due to the Drs watched my eyes for changes in brain.
So my thought is he was prescribed opioids in the hospital and just became a junkie unfortunately.
My deal on pain is, it only hurts if you allow it to.
The damage to those cars is crazy. What did they make those cars out of, paper?
Safer barriers were one of the best things for the mile and a half and the much faster cars back then. It wasn't uncommon for a nationwide car to hit 190 mph back then and the cup cars well over 200 at those tracks. That's alot of Weight and energy up against solid concrete and you can see the car yield pretty hard for a hit like that. Difftent times back then. It wasn't uncommon to have super late models even with 800hp and no hitting the revlimter back then. Source. Myself racing my first full size stock car race at the age of 10 back in 2006
Was Christian related to Crew Chief Jake Elder ?
This happened in the hay day of doctors diving out highly addictive pain killers pretty freely. A lot of people become addicted to oxytocin. When it was hard to get methadone was given. A very strong drug that could be deadly especially if mixed with other drugs like benzodiazepines.
Methadone is a medication for addiction to opioid. If you take other drugs or even alcohol it can cause death. It is a long term aid for the addiction while helping with chronic pain without the high
that thing looked like it's front right tyre just disappeared into the void
I was a good friend. You used many of my pics. Christian had lingering injuries. The medical system pumped him full of oxy. When he realized he had a oxy problem he sought help. Methadone was the treatment.
I feel like there are many issues with this wreck
So tragic! That wall was not kind to him or his car.
Chronic pain leads to addiction leads to methadone to ease the opioid/opiate addiction. Methadone is very easy to OD on.
This was also during the time period when doctors were handing out painkillers like candy. Sad, but not unusual or all that mysterious
i Believe its SCCA (sports car club of America).Thats what the photos were showing anyway..I havent heard of the SCAA(Although a race series dedicated to the squirell nut zippers would be cool.Oh wait thats Ska.) :)
Methadone used at addiction clinics too. That shit I'm scared of
*SCCA
Were they ever able to determine what actually caused the accident? It looks to me as if the front passenger/outside tire completely blew out. Just my observation
Opiates are tough...
I would think the chronic pain was from the neck injury, not broken collar bone
Methadone has nothing do to with your heart. If his heart gave out, it’s because he overdosed. That’s not because of his heart, it’s because it suppresses the respiratory system so bad, it slows down breathing to the point where you quit breathing in your sleep
No offence but it boogles my mind that many people still don't understand what chronic pain is or how it can be possible. They think that injuries just magically recover to 100% or near 100% without pain. News flash, for an unlucky many, injuries don't ever fully recover and can cause uninterrupted pain for life. Often doctors can't pin point the exact cause or reason for the pain and discomfort. Many people go untreated because it must just be all in thier head right. I'd rather OD than live in pain constantly, which is unfortunately my life now, and the life of a number of my friends and family.
Wouldn’t surprise me he was taking it for migraines.
I feel for the guy but how the hell was he allowed to keep driving long enough to sustain any of these injuries with the amount of crashes and lack of success, is there a shortage of people who want to drive NASCAR or something? This is a crazy story
Any relation to Jake Elder?
No I knew the family and worked for his uncle for 10 years. The grandfather Jim was pretty well off,(multi millionaire if not billionaire) but was a great guy and never acted like it. He could have anyone work on his vehicles but once he got to know me, I was the only one who he would let touch anything he owned. 🙄 Chris (he hated being called that, so I did it just to piss him off) had substance abuse issues which is probably why he was on methadone(?). His dad financed his racing career to try to help him from using.
82 G's would be enough force to flatten a human like a pancake
You have never been really physically hurt have you?
Dale Earnhardt also died due to a wreck in nascar
That car always looks ok from the left but soon as the right shows it's like he's hurt. Bad. Get over there quad time. Another good man lost too soon and should've been at least observed longer than 1 night after that.
It's called getting addicted to prescription drugs. Happens everyday, and he overdosed. Hate that he's gone, but my God was he terrible in any racecar outside of the Dash series. Which is exactly why Brad Akins yanked him from the seat and put Mark Green in the Busch car. Also, it's blatantly obvious that the roll cage collapsed in that last wreck
I kinda laugh when I hear commentators now a days saying "wow that was a hard hit"
The safer barriers and newer technology make wrecks a picnic compared to hitting solid concrete..
It's very confusing. People take methadone at methadone clinics for over 30 years and many at 6x the amount any doctor would prescribe. When they say toxicity they mean a reaction to other medication with the methadone. But a doctor would know the interactions and not prescribe both medications at the same time. An example would be taking Adderall which is amphetamine and an upper and methadone which could be called a downer. Either a doctor made a mistake, or he was seeing 2 doctors and one didn't know about the methadone, or he was getting something off the street. My bet is on either 2 doctors each not knowing what the other prescribed or he was taking something off the street or alcohol can do it as well.
Oh my he died just 4 days before my 2nd birthday
8:45 - I BET MY FARM IT WAS C.T.E. AND NASCAR DID NOT WANT TO SAY ANYTHING ABOUT IT!!!!!
There was nothing routine about that hit. It literally cracked the cage 4 diff spots.
The person who inspired Eric McClure
Sounds like he became an addict which isn't uncommon.
Unfortunately he was an addict. Methadone is what you use to get off opiates. He probably accidentally od'd or mixed it with alcohol
If you follow the money you would have a better understanding as to what went on with this guy. And to entertain the fact he was taking methadone to treat pain is extremely kind of you. The way you stated it as fact is silly. But what I get from this story is it takes more than money to reach the top and that makes Dale Earnhardt Jr one Bad mofo
