Another possible reference is with the name Dulcinea: Dulcinea del Toboso is a fictional character in the Spanish Novel "Don Quijote". She is described as this perfect woman who is beautiful, sweet and kind. However, although she is constantly mentioned by Don Quijote thorough the story, Dulcinea is never really seen at all and it gives the reader the impression that maybe she does not exist. During Act I of GtN, Dulcinea presents herself as this beautiful and sweet lady. However, it's not until Act III that the reader finds out that the real Dulcinea doesn't exist.

To add to your findings, in latin "dulcis" means "sweet" and the suffix "nea" is usually found at the end of a woman's name. So her name would translate as "the sweet woman"

Owwww I actually was surprised when I commented this to a non spanish speaker that never heard of El Quijote, it was kind of a dead give away for me (as someone that is studying hispanic literature) that she was probably not real or the real Dulcinea

    • @extantcadence2707

Specifically, Gideon uses the phrases "gloom mistress", "penumbral lady", "night boss", almost says "bone empress", and afterward uses "my tenebrous overlord", but it's Harrow herself who says "twilit princess"
I'm not sure if there's any significance to that distinction, but there might be some

@extantcadence2707 yes thank you. Made my comment after only my first read through and had to paraphrase lol but I think it counts, its too close not to be on purpose I think. Plus I just like to imagine twilight princess is a game Muir would enjoy and want to slip in there subtly

Probably shortly after finding out about beguiling corpses or other stuff about Dulcinea.

Why are these memes considered genius? They add little to the plot and are mainly extraneous, anyone can start with some reference and find a way to drop it in randomly to a narrative. The greek mythology reference to the first to die is more of a fit with the story, but even with this, what is "genius" about including it? As a writer you could literally just write down 10 random quotes and references from things you are reading and watching, then, edit them in whereve they might fit. And dropping them into dialogue quirks is probably the laziest way to do it. So genius? No.
