@@thosefroggyfolks2004 Whenever I hear the name Magnus the only thing that my brain can do is the imagine her as Jean Marie calling out to Magnus in their intro scene. 🤣
I love this so much! I only have two notes that may help clarify for anyone reading: First, necromancy may be partially genetic. It's implied to run in families to some extent (otherwise, reigning families of necromancers wouldn't be an established practice) and while that may be more a matter of exposure to the energies than actual genetics, it's not stated anywhere that genetics play no part. Just that they aren't the only or most important part (which is being born in system on a necromantic world). Necromancers can have non-adept children, and vice versa, but there is likely some correlation otherwise you wouldn't have heriditary titles and family lines of necromancers. Second, the way this describes the "Necromantic Scion" thing is misleading. "Scion" just means child/descendant, and in this case the term means that they act as a representative for their house, not that they rule it. They aren't necessarily the official leaders of their planets, in fact from what the letter Harrow reads says they are explicitly NOT intended to be. As far as anyone (probably including the Emperor at that point) is concerned, she is the daughter of the rulers of the ninth house, not its leader. She probably is known to be the strongest necromancer, however, and definitely known to be the Reverend Daughter. So it's addressed to her parents, requesting her. Similarily, most of the other scions have titles but NOT titles which would indicate supreme leadership ("princess" instead of queen, duchess, Captain, etc.), and it would make logical sense that the honor of becoming a Lyctor and thus having to leave the system would be bestowed on the families of the rulers rather than rulers themselves for political and stability reasons, and on the best possible necromancers for practicality reasons. The sole exception to this that I can recall is Palamedes, who is the Master Warden which is implied to be a powerul title- but the sixth is also suggested to be an at least somewhat meritocratic society so this is probably the only situation where "best necromancer" and "ruling necromancer" would be indisputably the same. This would also explain why so many of the scions skew so young (late teens to mid twenties for many of them) because they're the children of/related to the people in power rather than holding complete power in their own right. And again, Lyctors have to leave the system, the Emperor wanted as many Lyctors as possible from the trials, and the trials themselves were dangerous. Intentionally removing the rulers from all eight of the Houses at once would be unwise for a number of reasons.
Silas is the head of the Eighth, Abigail of the Fifth and Isaac is technically the ruler of the Fourth (though given his age he likely has never done any actual ruling). Silas mentions it explicitly when talking to Colum, Abigail took Magnus as her Cavalier only after taking up the position five years before GtN, and Isaac inherited the title of Baron from his deceased father.
... when one kid in three is an adept, the heads of the house just count their necromancers born. and only if it's artificially done will it be exact numbers. maybe harrow's mother accidentally did her own babies in by trying to make them necromancers, but they have to already be necromancers...

Thanks Sex Pal and Cam! But fr, I love that it reads like Palamedes explaining to the audeince what the hell is happening because no one else has or will bother
When the internet horrifyingly knowing all the things you do online results in a perfect recommendation! I love your Palamedes and his six-sided glasses.
I'm one of the nerds who wants to figure stuff out by herself but I also know that I won't catch everything from my first reading of the book so I'm going to save this video for later. For now, the illustrations are so well-done and cute and the narration is interesting, thank you for this video!
I'm now neck deep in Harrow the Ninth, but this is still great because one of the things that made it difficult for me to get into Gideon the Ninth was understanding the lore and how fast they throw you into the deep end
My friend sent this so that I might get into the series, and the way my chemistry final riddled brain IMMEDIATELY woke up after hearing about CORPSE BOMBS
I didn't know you had a yt channel??? This is such a lovely surprise, your tumblr blog has been one of my favourites since you started drawing cr fanart! This is a fantastic introduction to tlt, i can only hope for more tlt content on here 🙏
Thanks! I don't usually advertise it a lot because I'm not very good at video making yet, and I don't plan to monetize it, I just like the process. Maybe I'll make other stuff as well!
The way I literally finished all three books but still haven't internalized most of the info about the houses and their specialties (aside from sixth and ninth and yes that's totally a coincidence!) Thanks so much for this, I appreciate all the work that went into making such a fantastic primer!
Just started the book and was feeling lost. Off to youtube I went, knowing that someone somewhere had done the work and presented it in a digestible way. Tada! This is it. But beyond that, the art is incredible and has made me more excited to dive into this world. Thanks so much Chekhov!
I wish I had seen this before starting the book! It would have made the reading process less confusing, but now that I have finished the book, I can see I was not too far off, pretty rewarding! Great job! I´m trying to explain the book to my boyfriend and I might just send him this video since it is better than anything I could come up with.
Late to the party and I found this video by complete accident from an animated music video that i also discovered by accident. This made made me want to read the books. In fact, i bought the first one as I watched this video. Great work!
Something to note is that scion also means heir. All of the necromantic scions are also heirs to ruling their respective planets, though this isn't always hereditary.
Thank you for this video! I tried to start the series multiple times but always found the amount of characters and info you get straight from the beginning kinda overwhelming. This definitely makes things more clear!
This was very educational :) made me want to get back on Tumblr for the fan art :( but thanks for fuelling my obsession, reading this trilogy is preserving my life force like Dulicinea rn
I love seeing your art on tumblr and this is such a great introduction to the series! I hope you get to illustrate an official full length Locked Tomb graphic novel someday.
Tysm for this, I've had the first book sitting on my "to-read" pile for months and now I feel more confident about diving in! I may love worldbuilding, but something of this depth I appreciate knowing before getting started.
Im almost halfway thru the book and i love it! But i was confused about the types of necromancy, so thanks! Also the clips of you trying to pronounce the words at the end is so funny, there are definitely a few words i pronounce differently than you 😂

I believe it was mentioned that only harrow could raise skeletons from fragments, yeah. But as for the first... I guess technically yes because they're all lyctors? Though none of them specialized in bone magic.

*read in Moira Quirke voice* "Nooooo, Magnussss, don't tell everyone about our loreeee"
Moira Quirke’s voices are so iconic. I will just be doing random tasks around the house and break out into Harrow or Jeannemary’s voice
Moira Quirke's voice work is perfection in every regard except one.

Me, after finished reading HtN: oh.

Legally, he probably still is. I doubt anyone bothered to update the paperwork before Harrow and Gideon left.
