another one for you: on page 393, when nona is talking to the other resurrection beast through judith and tells it to stop hurting the captain, judith says, “for eight thousand unjust bodies i will stop.” to me that read as a reference to the “buy my silence. permanently.” meme that goes “for $8,000 a month, i will stop.” cracked up at that one when i first saw it 😂
Best thing is it came from Alexander Hamilton, who got on everyone's nerves for how often and long he talked for, that he put out flyers saying he would shut up if they paid him.
I listened to the audiobook and I am convinced that Tamsyn took into consideration what Pyrrha sounded like when writing "delicious num nums for baby" in chapter 7 because you can't tell me that isn't a reference to The Final Pam from Monster Factory on youtube.
I just finished Nona and I'm overwhelmed. But just wanted to say my theory about why Sext call themselves Paul. I think we might be heading to a massive Beatles joke, maybe? John and Paul facing off? also, there's beetles involved, sort of, like in the resurrection beast.
To be fair, Kiwis and Aussies have been using "sus" for decades, but I do like that it has become a more mainstream dig, and Gideon is definitely wrong Sarpedon is a miltary wife DO NOT COME FOR HIM
During Cam, Nona, and Pyyrha's first meeting in the BOE hideout with the commander and Pash, they bring up the possibility of using a shuttle. Irrc, the commander has doubts about its usefulness due to its small size, but Pash says something like "you know how many soldiers I can fit in there?" I took that moment as a reference to the *slaps roof of car* "You know how many -blank- I can fit into this?" meme lol
If you do a mini video and the extra story "The Unwanted Guest", there's a refference in Scene 4. Palamedes slams his hands down on a coffin lid, then points dramatically at Ianthe while arguing. It's a reference to the Ace Attorney video games, specifically the "Objection!" Pose of the main character.
Given that Teacher was explicitly called a "melange" by Cytherea in GtN, I suppose "Paul" really could also be a reference to Dune, but I suspect that it's mainly a reference to St. Paul, the primary architect of the main version of Christianity - specifically in the sense that here are Palamedes and Camilla showing this newer, gentler way to go about doing things (AND going on about conquering death) in stark contrast to John/God and his much more Old Testament, unforgiving fire and brimstone mindset.
@@eliburry-schnepp6012 I figure at some point you've got to separate the literary, metaphorical meaning from the literal, biographical person; I do not believe that any anti-Semitism is intended by alluding to St. Paul.
@@joshrhodes5832 Neither do I, I'm not accusing Muir of anything just saying that the idea makes me as a Jewish fan a little uncomfortable. It's a personal thing
A short and silly one in chapter 16: "“Language, Honesty,” said someone else. Nona rubbed her eyes and struggled to sit up; she had been about to say the same thing, but all that came out was “Wharrgarbl.”" Reference to the caption on an image of a dog trying to drink from a sprinkler and failing.
Also some background knowledge is that the author is a fan of homestuck and pull a lot of character dynamics from it and Gideons glasses are even a reference to Dave Strider
I think Noodle is a meme reference himself. On Tumblr, there's a user called pangur-and-grim with a white long-haired oriental cat named Pangur. Pangur just looks. Odd. Kind of noodly. People started photoshopping Pangur pics, like adding in a third set of legs, which look weirdly plausible, and even more than six legs, which are less so.
slight correction for 3:30 - Neil just did some of the voices for the animatic version of the comic, but it was originally drawn by his sister, Emmy Cicierega
No, Neil drew it as well! He originally asked Emmy to draw it, but she said no so he did it himself; when he posted it her response was ‘I will say no all the times forever’ haha
The moment that Pyrra pushes Nona's hand through Iante's ward death field is gom jabbar backwards. In the Dune Paul puts his hand into the pain box and can not take it out lest he will be killed. Nona isn't afraid of the pain, but of putting her hand in;)
The “achewood” comic strip is also a reference to a old video let’s say of a spicy and unusual nature that circulated the early internet which I’ve had the misfortune to remember involving as described
Also, “those are my speed holes, gotta go fast” the last part “gotta go fast” is an infamous sonic the hedgehog meme of a poorly drawn sonic the hedgehog saying that.
I actually think the dark night of the soul line is supposed to be writer meta humour, breaking the fourth wall a bit. Since it is a term so heavily used in story structure.
On pg 406-407, John says "You'd have someone shoot someone. Everyone would yell about it. Then someone else would shoot THAT person." ... "The funny thing is, it was all to try to make the other ones stop firing... like an old comedy sketch." I thiiink this is a reference to Dear Sister from SNL: ruclips.net/video/vmd1qMN5Yo0/видео.html
This is one I'm not 100% sure of, but when Hot Sauce revealed to Nona why she was called Hot Sauce, she said "Because I really like it. Because you can put it on anything." which might be a reference to the Sonic Fandub parody by Snapcube, where Shadow the Hedgehog reveals that he puts hot sauce on everything, from twinkies to milk.
I am super proud my Dune reference comment made it into this; I have butterflies, thank you!! ☺️ Also I definitely never would have picked up on some of these, so thanks!
Some Tumblr folks pointed out that Varun is only a letter off Varuna, the Hindu god of oceans, so Varun might be the ghost of Neptune; but as Varun is also called "Number 7" and the seventh planet is Uranus, his line "I am made a mockery" carries a different implication
I don't think the houses are all explicitly tied to planets. Ninth on Pluto, sure, but it was implied the Sixth House was closest to Dominicus so that would put them on Mercury, and the First House is definitely on Earth, which is the third planet, etc.
Ok after reading the comments on all three of these videos I think you should do a little wrapup of the ones you missed, as well as at least mentioning that there’s tons of biblical references as well. Or maybe you could do that at the beginning of a biblical references video Idk. I love that it took a whole community working together to catch these lol
I may well do another one on the ones I missed. Perhaps on the lead-up to Alecto! I'm not sure I'm going to do one on the biblical references. I'm not religious myself or very knowledgeable in that area so I'd feel a bit lost 🤔
.... did... did you just attribute the most famous line in all of philosophy to tolstroy? 'i know only that i know nothing' is 2000 years old, from socrates.
Have you mentioned in any of these videos the allusions to Annabel Lee yet? And of course there's tons of catholicism stuff going on in the books too, but all of that could easily be it's own separate video haha
Ohhh I didn't, no! And yes, I decided to leave the more religious references out for the most part. But there are so many of them, they could absolutely be their own video!
In Dune, Paul Atreides has had a vision in which the Fremen, desert dewllers of Arrakis, adopt him as their Messiah, calling him, "Muad'Dib." When Paul meets the Fremen in real life, and accepted as one of them, they ask him what name they should use for him. He asks them the name of a desert mouse, which is of course, "Muad'Dib." Upon hearing the confirmation of his vision, Paul decides to try making a change, He asks the Fremen if he can be known as "Paul Muad'Dib." The Fremen agree.
I don't think I've picked up on a single meme from any of the books. I'm not familiar with most of these references. Everyone knows the Simpsons, but who'd latch onto that one episode out of the thousands of Simpsons episodes produced? I'm familiar with The Game, but I simply didn't pick up on it. Something like the image projector having slow rendering doesn't strike me as a "meme." It just shows my age. Maybe it's severe culture clash, if I live underneath a rock, if Tamsyn Muir picks up on the most random and obscure things then borrows them, or if I simply don't pay attention?
I don't think it matters honestly. For some people it's like a treasure hunt, but if you don't see them, then it honestly doesn't matter. It's just a slightly different reading experience. I got more literary references than memes personally.
So did I miss any? Let me know!
The Angel or the Messenger is named AIM (as in AOL Instant Messenger) their predecessor was Em Essen (MSN)
Yessss, I'm so sad I didn't pick up on any of that!
