      The racking sound is enough unless the person in your house smokes bath salt and the sound triggers them, but the 00 buck shot should work, however there's been people on pcp and bath salts that been shot like 60 times before dying

    People zooted out on drugs do not care about the slide sound. Some just have to feel the music.

    My agency had trouble with surface rest on our disused 870 express police shotguns. We found that by putting a very thin coating of frog live on the exposed metal surfaces prevented the rust issues. The frog lube sometimes required another coat about 6 months later.

    I have a hogue youth stock on my 870 tactical with a seven round side saddle. Two slugs/five 000 buck. The stock shortens it up for home defense but still usable all around. Surefire scout mounted on the pump fore end.

    You have to disassemble the light mount when you clean the gun. I have the magpul tactical express and have an m-lok light mount on the forend. Upgrades: Streamlight tlr-1, wilson combat extended spring, steel follower, mesa tactical six shot side saddle, wilson combat safety switch, upgraded dog carrier spring, magpul ms-4 gen 2 sling, magazine cap with qd mount, qd mount in stock. I run #4 buck. Less over penetration but still very effective.

    First off, that beast is a beauty! I have a Mossberg 590 A1 myself and I have it set up for home defense as well. A couple of things though, You are right about the light being the first thing you need, however I think something more streamlined like the Inforce mounted to the slide might prove a bit less cumbersome. Also, I would forget the idea of a red dot. It is just something to go wrong waiting to go wrong; either you have to turn it on, or the battery is dead or something. I just kept the ghost rings on my M-berg. And if that gun is for home defense, it has no business in the safe. No bad guy is going to wait for you to open your safe, and while I'm at it, I don't know how good an idea it is to keep the chamber empty. I always keep my gun READY to go. True the sound of racking one in the chamber is a very intimidating sound, but I am afraid it just might let the bad guy know what direction to shoot in. like I said, that gun is a beauty and is far too sexy to be locked up in a safe somewhere.

    The TR25 will work, I have one I purchased for 25$ at a pawn shop 20 years ago, I have ran on everything from an airsoft gun to a 12 gauge. It is presently on an airsoft gun and it spent about 5 years on a ar pistol that I fired 1000's of rounds through. I have owned about 6 or 7 of these and they work great. If you leave them on you should change the battery every 3 months, if you only turn them on when you need it they will last about 3000 hours. I stopped using them about 2 years ago because I wanted the shake awake mode that comes on when you pick it up, otherwise they're exceptional sights. I will also note that that $25 sight has taken some abuse, dropped sight first on concrete from 4' off bench, gun lying on bed,6 year old jumped on bed, rifle did a triple gainer in the air and landed right on the sight on oak floor. As far as your rust problem, If you are serious about functionality, I shoot in rain, mist snow etc. I coat all my long guns with a coat of flat black rustoleum paint, then color them whatever pattern I choose. I have rifles that are holding up over 10 years with a few scratches in the patterns. I never have to wipe down the exterior of these firearms and get a lot of praise on the camo jobs as well. Tape off sights etc. trigger and ejection port to prevent entry into the system. Wipe the firearm down with a degreaser I have cerakoted firearms and they have scratches in the finish also after 5 or 6 years so the effect is the same and a lot cheaper. If you shy away from paint, as a Police firearms dealer I wiped my weapons down with wd40 on the exterior and never had rust issues when customers handled firearms and they were not wiped down afterward.

    I’m thinking something like this will be my first gun. Primary objective would be home defense but I also want to be able to maximize its slug shooting ability without compromising too much on its close range capabilities. I’d think a 1-6 LPVO would be ideal if it can withstand the thump of the 12 gauge. Magnification to make shooting slugs further out easier while maintaining the 1x setting for quick target acquisition up close

    Shotgun In your safe in case someone breaks into your house. I guess you don’t want anyone to take your shotgun.
    Scenario: You’re sleeping. You wake up to a loud noise and hear someone in your home. You leap from your bed and run as fast as you can to your safe. Adrenaline at a level 10 you try to push in the combination as quick as you can. The key pad misses a number and denies access. Again you type the code fast and again the keypad misses a number. A third time you type the number slower and it works, as you open the safe door you are stuck by a fast moving tiny object in the back and pass on to another realm.
    Thank God you had a gun safely stored in the gun safe.

    • @Shamrockjason
      @Shamrockjason 6 лет назад

      On my side saddle I have birdshot double OO buck shot and one slug all the bird shot faces up meaning the brass is down the double OO buck faces the opposite way and the slug is to the far back and in the opposite fashion I keep it loaded like this that way I know exactly what rounds are which in a low light or dark situation I would be able to feel what it is that I would be reloading into my weapon. I bet that this guy has never really treated with this weapon system nor has he ran any drills in his home or scenarios. if you don't trade and you don't practice you'll never be good at anything especially in a defensive high pressure situation.

    • @erizzle67
      @erizzle67 4 года назад

      If they're upside down, vibration could knock them loose. Not likely but I would get used to top loading like this. There's videos on here how to quickly reload this way, just takes practice! As for some up and some down, I personally think it's best to have them all the same direction so you don't have to think.

    6:18 - Studies conclude that the racking sound makes no difference to intruders. One DOJ study indicated assailants are more afraid of a big dog than the racking of a shotgun. The premise is that the home owner doesn't have the guts to pull the trigger in the heat of a situation. Your best home defense loading posture is to load one in the chamber, then open the bolt enough to make the shell visible, with the safety selector on "fire". If you have to engage, then you only have to push the slide forward (about) a half inch to fire.
    Just a training note, if you take a combat course, they'll tell you to load your side saddle with the shot shells "brass up", and the slugs "brass down". You'll be able to better determine your shells for a selective reload.
    I keep a Mossy 590A1 by the bed. It's a 7 shot mag, but I put an OPSol adapter in the bottom port and load it with 13+1 Aguila Mini Shells. I figure I shouldn't have to reload. *Nice scattergun.* Well put together.

    I have my 870 hanging from the front sling loop right over my bed. I keep the tube full and one in the chamber, but the slide half racked. Should the hook it's hanging from fail, or the shotgun fall for whatever reason the downward inertia would likely eject the round rather than chamber it. When I grab it to go (by the pump) it chambers the round when I remove it from the hook. Also I'd take that gun to hell if I had to go there, would want my AR-15 close too, but the 870 had never let me down once.

  • @Dese50
    @Dese50 7 лет назад +34

    Anyone counting on a hardened criminal or meth freak being scared off by the sound of a shotgun racking is kidding themselves. Quit playing games and be ready for lethal action rather then giving away literally every tactical advantage that you have hoping you can "scare off" someone bent on doing you harm.
    A person coming into you home knowing there are presently occupants if there for you, your wife, and/or your children, not for your stuff. If you feel like making a scary sound is enough, that's your prerogative, but your family deserves better protection than that.

    • @RubensBarrichello.
      @RubensBarrichello. 4 года назад +3

      I can agree that it won't scare off a hardened criminal or tweaker, but the sound can also be used in case there isn;' a home invader and your wife/kids in the other room can be like YO IT'S ME. As you said theyre coming into a home with occupants they are there for you. The problem with having one in the chamber is if you cat knocks your shotgun off its axis the pin can fire a lethal rd into the back of your wifes head.
      Here's my two cents: Don't have you & the gun be the only line of defense. Your family deserves better protection than that. Have you ever watched home alone? Deter, Fortify, Alarm, Trap, Shotgun.

    Counting on the sound of racking a pump shotgun to scare bad guys away isn’t a great idea. If someone’s intent on doing you harm and has entered your house and you are using a pump shotgun to defend you and yours, the only noise should be you disengaging the safety. At the same time, I think people should do whatever they want and feel comfortable with. Have fun with that 12ga. I have a real love for older 870’s. I’d have 20 of them if I could.

    the racking of the round to scare the bad guys can be good . or bad.. if there are 3 or 4 bad guys that let's them know where to shoot AT THAT RACKING NOISE . but i do see a good thing in racking the gun as it allows for the idiot to make a decision to leave or stay and fight... so in the legal sense thats good.. also most shotguns are not drop safe so if it's chambered a shotgun can discharge a round if dropped. so theres alot of different reasons NOT to keep a round chambered. in the Police dept it's called CRUISER READY when ur loaded but not chambered.

      Well then you don't seem to understand the psychology of most home intruders. If they're carrying a weapon, 9 out of 10 times they're a burglar looking to steal and use that weapon to control their victims but as soon as they realize their victim has a gun, they're running out the house pissing themselves because now they've lost that advantage of control. Bottom line is, most criminals aren't looking to kill anyone but someone defending their home will have no qualms gunning down an intruder who has a weapon and the criminal knows this.

  • @countrysamurai
    @countrysamurai 4 года назад +1

    You shouldn’t load the magazine full. The springs are not that strong and could take set, being unable to load the last one or two from the magazine. Load two in the mag and keep what’s on your side saddle. You need more than 8 rds? You are going to need more than a shotgun. Reliability for your primary tool is paramount!

  • @dgd947a15fl
    @dgd947a15fl 6 лет назад +1

    I'm not a fan of the breacher chokes. The theory behind them is to make it easier to hold the barrel against the end of a door before shooting a round through the lock and busting into the room. They have special ammo designed just for blowing through door locks. Regular slugs or buckshot don't properly break the lock. So unless you plan to breach locked doors with a team of people and have the special breaching ammo, it's just a gimmick. Adds weight and length to the end of your gun without actually doing anything useful. Not to mention it just looks stupid.

    Beautiful setup but racking a round after someone has entered your home is just stupid. You lose surprise and concealment. Also using a 00buck for home defense is just pointless. It will over penetrate and can cause other issues. Using a 4 buck is a much better home defense round.

    OO buck shot is not what you would be using for home defense. Birdshot is more than adequate to get the job done.
    In my side saddle I have birdshot double OO buck shot and one slug all the bird shot faces up meaning the brass is down the double OO buck faces the opposite way and the slug is to the far back and in the opposite fashion I keep it loaded like this that way I know exactly what rounds are which in a low light or dark situation I would be able to feel what it is that I would be reloading into my weapon. I bet that this guy has never really treated with this weapon system nor has he ran any drills in his home or scenarios. if you don't train and you don't practice you'll never be good at anything especially in a defensive high pressure situation.

    2. The intruder gave you no notice, don’t give him any by racking the action. If they make it into the inner perimeter, THEY ARE FU%#*&G DEAD!!! PERIOD!!!!
    3. Having said that, 3 maybe 4 rounds should be plenty.

    The last thing you want is a multi function flashlight on a defensive gun. You need to be able to turn on and off and then move. Not turn on flip through 30 bullshit clicks to turn it off. That's how you get killed. And racking a shotgun only scares away your mom. A real criminal would just take that as indication to take their own gun out and now they know where you are. Stupid advise.
