    It is totally "tacticool" but I like it. I have the 870 magpul tactical express. I've had the mesa tactical side saddle but I haven't been happy with the retention, each slot seems to have a different level of tightness. Plus it's a pain when I want to clean out and oil the trigger assembly. Just ordered the esstac 6 round velcro card and adhesive backing. I'm going to cut out spaces for the trigger pins.
    My model is 6+1. Has the magpul sga stock and moe sl foreend, picatinny rail, xs ghost sites, Remington tactical choke. All black, cerakoated. I put in the qd mount on the stock and got a magazine tube cap with qd mount. Wilson combat extended power mag spring, Wilson combat large safety. I have the heavier duty dog carrier spring but my gunsmith told me if I'm not having problems, which I'm not, it could end up causing issues so I haven't installed it. Also have a magpul ms4 gen 2 sling. Also a non-mim extractor. Bought it in 2014. Been seeing alot of videos about quality issues with the express model, especially the last few years. People needing to polish the bore specifically. Don't know if I just got lucky or Remington's quality was still good, but the inside of my bore feels smooth as glass, and I don't see any imperfections. The one thing I've found that very important for the gun to run smoothly, is keeping the forend rails lubed. Makes a huge difference if you've been running it dry. Started using MPro7 gun lube and really like it. Oh, I've also got a Streamlight tlr-1 mounted on the left side of the forend. I've gone back and forth between which I think is the best for home defense, the 870 or ar-15. Settled on the 870 loaded with #4 buck. Less chance of over penetration but still quite devastating.

    • @vincefairleigh6899
      @vincefairleigh6899 Месяц назад

      The 870 is far superior for home defence over the ar-15, I’d go for 000 buck too or even number 2 would work for close range, what do you think about what shot to use for the shotgun? For bear/grizzly defence I use 3” slugs

    • @abc456f
      @abc456f Месяц назад +1

      @vincefairleigh6899 I used to load it with 00 buck. Did more research and felt over penetration was an issue so I switched to #4 buck. Effective and safer.

    I love that you say your not going for tacticool but that exactly what you did. Over all looks really nice. Its all about fitting the gun to you and what you want and need it for. Mine is almost set up exactly the same except for the pistol grip adjustable stock but that was only in mind if my wife needed to ever use it. Nice video helps people see what they might really want or need and shows whats available for these guns. Over all a shotgun is the most practical for home defense or shtf with a bugget in mind.

    You have inspired me. I just finished my ksg project n this is a great idea for another 12, awesome color, awesome stock. I like the idea of throwing a black black aces rail over that tan duracoat tho, n keeping the light switch slightly above the charging handle as opposed to on it. So i wont totally bite your style lol.
    If you think about it, try to respond with some feedback on how it all worked out n if you changed anything around since '13.
    But seriously, you said it was just a cheap thrown together project... n it looks great.
    Thanks for posting!!!!

    I appreciate how you elaborated on all aspects of your build. I see a variation of opinions regarding black vs tan furniture, but the owner gets home field advantage. My opinion, for what it's worth, I like the "all tan" look that you did. I really like those sights too. Bottom line... that's a sharp scatter gun. Good job! Enjoy shooting it.

    Thanks for the tip on the Supercell. Not the first time I've heard positive things about that, so I'll keep it in mind.
    You made some good observations. Yeah, the forward shell carrier gets in the way in the current configuration so it's been removed for now. When I install an AFG I'll re-evaluate; the AFG may lower the support hand far enough that the shell carrier doesn't get in the way.
    Not sure I understand the second question? The sling attach pount is on the right side. No issue.

    Hello fellow 870 maniac! Awesome build!
    Love that 2-shell carrier on the forend! I had the same set up too, due to the magpul video hype!
    (I can't remember the company who made it, but they used to sell on amazon and on their own website).
    The hardest thing to accept, was that the 2-shell carrier (although very well made, made like a tank, & looked badass!) would rather injure you rather than help you out with two additional rounds on the firearm.
    I went through several classes and during the heat of the moment, that thing chewed through my fingers every time I racked the forend. I ended up taking it off both my 870s and selling them on ebay. Saved my finger. Made back my money's, as it was rare item to find nowadays.
    Maybe on an auto 12ga, it would work - but with pumps, forget it.
    Just my experience though and yours might be different.

    two notes you may be interested in. the light: a mini maglight pro plus with a red lens works better. at night white light lights up the smoke and you can't see. The brighter the white light = the worse the proble. Red light cuts through the smoke and you can see just fine. The 2nd point. red dots just own everythig on a shotgun. I use a vortex strike fire 2 and I will never go back. I LOVE shooting with both eyes open. I can "kill" 15 small cheap plastic flowerpots with my shotgun in 16-18 secounds. Just takes a secound to switch magazine tubes and reload the chamber. getting on target with a red dot is like pointing your finger. You just do it. both eyes wide open. 3rd, not a suggestion but shotgunning is just plain fun. 100 rounds of 7 shot for $20 at wall mart and you get magnum performance for your money.

All that crap may get in the way of the function of the gun. Also if you don't plan on using the rail on top of the gun, get rid of it. All-in-all nice gun.

    Hey awesome build. Keep up the good work but I do have a question. I want to put a fiber optic sight on the tip of the barrel like yours. How did you go about doing that? On my 870, the bead sight looks like it screws out but its screwed into a tiny plate that looks welded onto the barrel. Did you have the same situation or was your barrel different. Thanks!

  • @shrederduck
    @shrederduck 10 лет назад

    Love this set up... I have the SGA stock and MOE Forend on my 870 as well. I am having the same question on the Surefire Scout and the Magpul light mount kit... I have seen one actually strung through the handguard between the tube and the barrel, but it was just for pictures, and the practicality of running the pressure switch through the hand guard looks iffy. Friction/clearance of the magtube and barrel heat on that wire? I'm opting to run it under as well, but that's the mounting kit and light I've had on my amazon wish list for a while... How have you liked the set up that way and is there a place to find that fore grip block? I'm not the biggest fan of it, but I also wouldn't want the wire just hanging under loose even if it was a tight fit. Great video and thanks for sharing your set up!

    • @gatorpilot
      @gatorpilot  10 лет назад +2

      I don't love the setup with the pressure switch, to be perfectly honest. The slots that Magpul builds into the SOE forend require you to place the pressure pad a little higher and further back than I would like. Is it pretty good? Yeah... it's a clean install and works fine. The cord from the Mini Scout is really short and is the limiting factor.
      I definitely wouldn't trust trying to run the cable between the mag tube and the barrel. It seems like it would be bound to get hung up in there sooner or later. The cable is flexible enough that it will probably droop a bit. And I would also worry about heat from the barrel, although it would probably take a fair number of shots fired for it to heat up enough to worry about. Hope this helps with your decision on your own setup.

  • @ap7655
    @ap7655 Год назад

    Does the light jump around a lot being mounted on the forgrip? I can't decide between grip or mag tube mounted. I like that the mag tube mounted is more stable and will throw less of a shadow. But it is harder to turn on and off.

I have about 4-5 friends with an 870 and theirs all held maybe 4+1. And another friend with an 870, which also says, tactical, but came with a magazine extension on it. What?! What even are the options available from Remington and what gives?

    • @incog74
      @incog74 10 лет назад

      No -- I'd fear that would interfere with the action. Not worth running the risk of that cable getting bound up over time.

  • @drakeanglin
    @drakeanglin 10 лет назад

    i like the gun, just one thing. the shotgun shells are upside down on the side. its made to go brass up that way they don't fall out, and you can go up and over through the ejection port for quick speed reloads.

    • @gatorpilot
      @gatorpilot  10 лет назад

      Drake, the shells are commonly positioned either way according to user preference. For combat reloads (loads directly into the ejection port) the shells should be brass up. For reloading the mag tube they should be brass down for the most efficient method of loading. Check out Chris Costa's teachings in "The Art of the Dynamic Shotgun" video. This is his recommended configuration. I've always run my side saddles this way -- two up for combat reload, the rest brass down for admin reloads.

    • @drakeanglin
      @drakeanglin 10 лет назад

      i onderstaand that completely, because i to run my shells like that on my shotgun. but what i was getting at was that shell carrier is not designed with that loading method in mind. its is designed for a over the top reload style, thats why the fit is loose, so when you have them brass up they don't fall out and they come out over the top easily.

  • @OvisHerder1
    @OvisHerder1 9 лет назад +3

    Prettiest shotgun I've seen yet. Do you really need all that malarkey? I mean the gun looks pretty but tactically incificiant. My opinion.

    • @gatorpilot
      @gatorpilot  9 лет назад +5

      +Victor Rivera I no longer use the Sidearmor shellshot carrier. It got in the way.
      Everything else adds utility to the gun. A tac light and a shell carrier are the only real mods. The sights are fiber optic. It's a pretty basic, shotgun, really. And I think it's actually quite efficient, tactically speaking. If you don't want the light, you don't have to use it. If you don't need the extra ammo, you don't have to worry about it. It adds a small amount of total weight and bulk to the gun. A very similar configuration is used on most of the shotguns in Magpul's "Art of the Dynamic Shotgun" training video.
      Based on a lot of the comments I think some folks just have an aversion to any extra gear on their guns and that's fine. If you want to run an extremely basic gun with no ammo loaded on the receiver and no tactical light feel free to do so, I just prefer to have a couple of extra tools in case I need them. It really is a simple piece of gear.

    I realize that this is an older video, but I am building an 870 and have a question that you may be able to answer. If you were to mount a red dot sight, like a Burris fastfire or RMR, to the rail on the Mesa side saddle/rail, would it co-witness with the rifle sights? Great looking shotgun, btw!

    • @gatorpilot
      @gatorpilot  7 лет назад

      Glazener, to answer your question, I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think so. The Mesa rail sits pretty tall and the rear sight mount itself is already partially obscured by the rail. So I would guess that an optic would be too tall.

    I have a 870 Express with 18" barrel and I'm currently "building" it as well. I wanted to add a 2 shot extension tube, but the extension protrudes pass the barrel. I want a flush 2 shot extension like yours but all the ones I looked passes the barrel but a half an inch. How long is your extension?

      The factory plus 2 extensions fit flush for the 18.5 inch barrel, while the plus 3s fit flush with the 20 inch barrel. Get a factory one; I have one and it's great!

      mc_4peace sorry for the late response, i'm unsure what you mean by how the factory extension is different, but the standard Remington extension is long enough for the 18.5 inch barrel to fit flush and the plus 3 version is long enough to fit flush for the 20 inch barrel. I wouldn't get anything other than the Wilson combat extension or the standard factory one, as I've had problems with others. Personally, the 6 round tube capacity is plenty for me and anything longer than that really makes the gun front heavy. my advice is: If you want the 7 round tube capacity then get a 20 inch barrel, but personally I wouldn't put too much thought into it. as far as how it's working out, the spring gets caught up in the small gap between the front of the extension and the end of the factory standard 4 round tube. Remington knew this was an issue, so now they make the tactical models with a 1 piece tube of 6 rounds so it is more reliable. what I mean by this is the gun doesn't have feeding issues with the spring bind, but sometimes when you try to load to 5-6 it gets caught up and you have to unload the gun then reload the tube. I believe the Wilson extensions don't have this problem and that's why i'd recommend getting one of those. Anyways, hope that answered your question if you have any more feel free to reply! thanks :)
