Thank you so much for the scoring explanation. As someone who delves into rules, strategies, etc for the activities his kids join (thinking rec league sports), I always felt there was a big mystery box around how things were scored in band. I've tried looking over the adjudication handbooks for more information, but without any music training/background, it was too difficult for me to comprehend.
Hi Daniel, thanks for a great video! Questions about scoring gaps: I appreciate that you explained the differences within subcaptions like MPI and MPE. Are there significant differences between overall captions like Music Performance Average, and are there significant differences between the total scores? How would those discrepancies be broken down and described?
Thank you for the scoring explanations! The scoring seems to try make subjective judgement of band into an objective measure. How often do you think this is done successfully?
It’s definitely tough to do consistently. Obviously the better the judge, the better the numbers. But there are lots of judges, lots of contests, and lots of bands. I’d say more often than not, they get it right. But not as much as we’d like.
I am in the Organ Mountain band and at the Las Cruces BOA we ended 4th in finals. 4th might not seem like a big deal but it was for us because we did not have any of our props on the field and there were parts in the show where we would stand still where there would normally be visuals. I’m told that props and visuals are a big part of general effect and a big part of BOA. So considering that we did not have any props or much visuals, I think that we did pretty well.
We have 2 indoor stadiums but not sure if it would support a football field inside. The UTRGV field is outdoors, so it wouldn't make a difference for the heat factor.
I’d say the differences in the “they’re in different galaxies”part would be better described as high school vs sunbelt vs SEC vs NFL. It’s all still band but completely different leagues of achievement.
For Las Cruces just letting you know for future reference that it is New Mexico State University, not University of New Mexico. Theres a pretty distinct difference, I want to save you the trouble of people hounding you for it since theres quite a strong, long-standing rivalry there
Man… much like KRAC, it seems BOA needs to get their info correct! I’ll have to double check stadiums and cities from now on. No more trusting the BOA website!

I like the way Daniel describes results
