  • Today I present you my new studio. I moved out of what I thought was my dream one and I want to share with you the reasons why.
I realized that I was hiding behind some excuses and having a pro studio was one of them. I hope that this might help some of you that are navigating the same issue.

The algorithms sometimes work i mysterious ways. Today i was trying to decide if i should rent an office to move my home studio in too since our 3 year old needs her own room. You helped me decide what my soul already knew. Scale down, give my girl the room she deserve and make it work. Challenge = creativity. Thank you for making my mistakes for me. Stay true, peace!

I carried out the same task for my 4 year old, scaled down and went minimal. I kept a corner for myself in the apartment until we got a new place where I was able to set up in a room with a view. Went through the WTF stage after expanding and only after 1 year did creativity start again, that day was today! :)

when they start walking around, getting food everywhere, spilling liquid wherever they want... this is the time to put them into some level of quarantine. My kid is approx. 6 years old now and has just started to really learn that: drawing indiscriminately on the walls with crayons, throwing drinks all over the place, etc. isn't okay. Music room has been LOCKED. If I ever have to scale down, I'm keeping the $2000 analog synthesizers in boxes in a closet and any time he goes near them, "NO!!!!" lol But with scaling down, I plan on just having a cheap acoustic guitar out in the open, and a cheap piano. That way you can focus more on theory and fundamentals of music making. So when you're finally able to pull out all that dope shit again, you'll be able to get 1000 more times of expertise out of it. That's my plan if I scale down.

@@lashtal everyone's offspring are unique and their own. I let my little one touch all my gear and twist every knob. I've taught respect for items. I do not want to impose fear of instruments like my parents did, I remember vague snapshots from my childhood. My dad never let me go near his drum kit, always telling me to go away during rehearsals. I grew up resenting him and hating music. Fortunately I found music in my own way and paved my own path. Go and find your inner child, invite your kid and inspire him to be better than you.

I’m happy for you Oora. You can’t underestimate the power of sunlight on brain, chemistry and mood. I had a similar situation where my studio is in the basement. My solution has been to create a studio B in the office with a few synths and able to where I can create during the day. It’s made the world of difference on my happiness.

I continue to really appreciate your openness and honesty. It’s so important to do the things that work for each of us individually as creatives, and to be reflective and self-aware, and not be bound by convention or the perception of how and where we are supposed to create. Much respect.

I change my setup regularly, because every time it boosts my creativity. It can be something small, like changing my main synthesizer and drum machine or main mono/bass synthesizer. Having the studio at home is also convenient, because it is accessible at all times when I have an idea. Studio looks great as always.

Federico, I have just come across your videos today and watched three of them, this being the third one. Your candidness is bold and greatly appreciated because it is tough for all artists to find their way and path. You have outlined in your own words quite a story that we can all somehow relate to in our own unique and different ways. Do not regret your choices of the past which I know you emphasized by your words, as that basement in Berlin has now given you such a profound perspective. Your path has now taken you to this current spot. As you continued speaking it was as if a light has begun to shine stronger and stronger like a sort of epiphany. Simplification, looking within and listening to your instinct while keeping a balance in life is vital. Unfortunately we are all surrounded by distractions and at times even certain people that can throw us off course from being able to recenter and extrapolate our own self creativity. You sir have crossed many stepping stones to where you are now and you will continue to evolve. Most importantly thank you for your truthfulness. Bravo! You have gained a new fan today.

Hello. Let me hank you for finding the time to write me these beautiful words. Since leaving NY life has been a rollercoaster of emotions and , at 45 , I still far from what I wanted to be. It seems the struggle with identity, success and truthfulness is something that will never cease. But messages like yours helps to put things in perspective. I wish you all the best! Federico

Glad to see you’re in a better place in all ways. You raise such a good point, that a dream is just an idea and not necessarily reality. Your point also connects to gear obsession, which I’ve experienced as a sickness, something that has only taken from joy, creativity, and productivity, much to my surprise. My best days are always with very little gear in my home where I feel safe and comfortable and my mind is allowed to wonder freely. All the best.

I get this so much! Not a separate studio, but a space I turned into one in my house. Everything is cool af, so you think "oh you know what would make that better? I'll get _____!" Then, I felt like all my time was just wiring, routing, rearranging, rethinking, "make a new template, that'll help. I just need to really think about the flow of everything", and it spiralled until I didn't even want to look at the stuff! All creativity gone and just darkness where I used to see joy. I'm glad you're feeling better and I hope you the best always man✌️

I love your honesty so much in these talks! Thank you! And yeah, mistaking the map for the territory is pretty much the modern trap we are all in. Working towards a thing is often more satisfying than getting the thing, but marketers will make sure you mistake your thing for their thing as much as possible.

The lesson from this is important. Thank you for sharing. Whether it’s a studio or a new synth or whatever we feel like is the answer - the excuse we all give ourselves for not doing the work. It’s very natural. It’s a struggle for everyone. By thinking about what is really important we can get back to the basics again and create. Being creative is difficult. Uncertain. Hard. Also wonderful. Your story will stick with me and help me avoid chasing a studio. My current setup is our dining room with partitions up. It’s all I can do, but it needs to be enough.

Thank you for your perspective and for sharing it so openly - I have learnt from that.
I will allow myself to share the way I view my musical endeavor for myself - I have established a dialogue with my inner child for some time now and what I do is protect them and build time and a safe space to play for them.
I think creativity stems from the inner child, so the more they are judged or suppressed or deprioritized, the more unhappy and lost you feel.
Best of luck in your journey. You are sufficient and you are great 🤗

Thank you for sharing this, its very brave of you to put yourself out there like this and admit your insecurities. You are not alone, I have had an almost identical experience to yourself in the recent past where I have invested in a studio in an expensive premises for over 2 years and like yourself it was problematic with neighbours noise, lack of creativity, dark room etc etc. I completely identify with what you have been through and am happy you have identified the issue. Hopefully now you can be at peace and begin to make some great music again. We sometimes forget the reasons why we get into music in the 1st place and it can be a long road to find yourself again. Sometimes we have to go through these journeys to learn what its is we dont want or need, it can be painful but it makes us stronger and eventually allows us to follow our true paths. As Rick Rubin so eloquently puts it ' Failures are just the information we need to get where we are going" Peace and Love to you :)

Thank you for sharing. I relate to a lot of what you’ve said here. About 2 years ago I was having a sort of personal crisis and I decided to rent a studio space to make music - I’m not a professional musician, I have a full time job in another industry, but I’ve always played music at home and in bands…. Anyway I’ve been through a lot of the same experiences and have questioned what the hell I’m doing. The cables, organising the space, feeling pressure to produce something because now I’m spending a lot of money on it… etc etc.. I don’t really like driving to studio because I feel the inspiration is gone by the time I get there - would really love to have it at home but, it’s not that time yet. So I’ve come through this experience learning about patience and acceptance, that I don’t have to turn my love of music into anything, music is always there for me in whatever form it takes. One day soon I’ll move my studio into my own home. Happy days 😊

Oh thank you so much for sharing your story so openly with all of us. Many of the things you say really land with me. We are currently renovating our new house, where we will build a home studio. I don't work in the music industry but there is a deep sense of love and curiosity for music that I have been surpressing for many many years.
I recognize what you say about influences of other people, steering you away from your own path. Im still searching for my own voice, while there are so many friends telling me what they want me to make or what they believe I should change to my music to make it popular... All I want is to explore and discover and have fun. And I think you have put yourself into the position again to do exactly that: follow your own voice in the comfort of your house and home without the distraction and noise.
Congratulations on your change, and I wish you a new chapter in your life full of hapiness and joy.

When I watched your studio tour from the old place I thought, oh, he’s not going to stay happy there, because of the light situation. I lived in Berlin for 3 years a decade ago and the low illumination truly made me suffer. Hinterhaus flat so I got mostly reflected light from a sidewall which amounted to nothing in winter. It felt like living at the bottom of a well. And then Berlin is also a city where you can easily disappear because there are so many people there and if you fall off the face of the earth nobody will notice. In many ways I loved Berlin, still wish I could have stayed there - it just got way too expensive -, but I do appreciate Spanish temperatures and summer illumination levels. It’s still dark here during the rainy season since we’re up north near the French border, but I found the perfect solution: I use a ring light as my desk lamp. Whenever I feel low I just do projects at my desk and after a couple of weeks working with the ring light on full power the low spirits usually dissipate. Also, my studio has a spot with two windows, one in the direction of the sunrise and another velux roof window, all with a comfy sofa and a good speaker setup. Often I make music there. Having a spot like that really helps!

Good decision you made. That Riverside area is for the Pros. You are a gear enthusiast/youtuber. Not really a ""music producer"" who continuously makes music for labels/living, etc. So in the strongest sense of the word.
But if you can make a living out of enthusiasm, that is also fine too. Nothings wrong with that.

    • @OoraMusic
      @OoraMusic  6 месяцев назад

While you make complete sense, I continuously make music, probably the non commercial one. Definitely Riverside is commercial oriented and not my perfect place, even tho was super inspiring.

    Hi Oora,
nice video with reflection of some important lessons due to your way in Berlin.
I realize some things in similar ways and mentioned the same in the past to you - light, space and a cozy Environment is very important for some of us.
Another creativity and time killer is for me the internet video content and to much new gear, in form of hard- or software.
There are some more bad behaviors that kills creativity but I am sure you made your experiences and be aware of them.
Take care and enjoy what you have and try to be yourself.
    Marc

I feel you. I have my own studio in my basement. I mostly go there to play drums. When I'm releasing music I go there to do mixing and mastering as I have proper monitoring setup there. My idea has been to also spend time there and incorporate my other gear to my music making process. However I find myself usually upstairs on the couch composing with Digitakt on my lap. I just can't find inspiration to spend time in the basement at the moment. I rather spend time upstairs with kids and wife although that is quite distraction at times. All that matters is that I find inspiration to make music and its a way of relaxing and doing something else than scrolling phone at evenings. Maybe there will be time when I would utilise that basement studio more but I think I should not push it and let things go with their own gravity.

space and light are everything, I have high ceilings in my home studio too, it's a lovely feeling room and two of the 4 walls are almost all windows with a nice view of the harbour and hills out one side. Honestly I could see the change when you moved into the new studio and there was some mental struggle going on while you tried to reconcile getting what you always wanted but it clearly not feeling or working like you hoped. It's hard when you commit to something like that and then have to have the guts to accept it's not working out, it can also take a while to even realise what's wrong. Personally I do like being in my home, hanging out with my cat but I would think it's possible to have a studio space that can feel the same way but potentially be more productive because it's a space for creativity and working. I see that not having the separation between work and home affects me sometimes. Anyway, all the best with the move and I hope it's getting you back on the right path mentally! Take care and much love from New Zealand.

I've been thinking so hard about downsizing my little studio and some other nascent projects to make room for my thoughts, in a way. Not even some take on minimalism so much as it'd be so nice to have room for a plate and drink, a book, a stuffed animal, my elbows etc. It's not even about the issues we have in overspending - gear can be sold - but the hoarding mentality and the allure of "*THIS* will finally fix my problems" only to discover that you have newer, more expensive, more tangential problems. I definitely never said to myself, "I'm so excited about how angry patchbays will make me, and yet here we are! I'm hoping 2024 sees all of us creating more art for ourselves and others, and less problems for ourselves and others (looking at you, rocking spouse on couch!)

Simple is the best for me. Today I completely surprized myself with the KingKorg own flanger on vocoder (also built in). Fantastic wobble on the voice nothing like a flanging effect, at least to me 😅
KingKorg, Roland Jupiter50 and Moog Subsequent are my mains accompanied by Roland TR8s. The Korg and Rolands have their own fx, on the Moog I use seperate chorus and space echo with reverb.
The Moog on S&H is madness, in a good way 😅

Experience is what makes us. Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda rarely works, it’s looking backwards and the past has already happened. Going through things is how we learn. Your dream actually worked perfectly as the Universe intended, because now you know both what you want and need!
Having to wrap your head around studio layout, configuring / wiring will make you (and has!) made you a better musician and engineer.
Funk haus is awesome because of its community, but of course be where your heart is. That’s where the music comes from-
Thanks so much for your honesty and taking us along for your journey. You help others by doing so! 💚🥳

thanks for mention, im just about to get a space to fix up a studio, it is totally closed off as its below ground.. me being a bit of a vampire and have always preferred a closed space(no day light) i imagine i'll be totally into it. To add its a big space, so the real main problem might be me thinking i have to fill this space with more synths.. i know this is silly and not the way to go as i strive to be as minimal as possible taking only what i really need.

@@OoraMusic I also had the experience of having a photo studio for 2 years, about 20 years ago, and I gave it up eventually because in was in a basement with no light. Light is so important to our well being and we only appreciate it when we don’t have it for a while. Also there was pressure to make the studio pay for Itself and that affected my creativity. So I can completely understand where you’re coming from.

Thank you, for your wisdom and honesty. Regarding the success of others and the low self-esteem, I think I get what you say There is sometimes a tension between doing something great (in your own as well in others' eyes) and having fun. Sometimes, when we feel pressured to perform in indirect ways, we lose the fun. I belief to be able to be content is a strong and inherent value in life, notwithstanding the sector one works in. Being content does not per se equate to the admiration of others. Sometimes a disconnect (of which a change in studio/situation can be an example) can be a a good way to find it again. It is my opinion that the greatest people ever lived are not per se the most successful, but the ones who found a balance between being able to be content and being able to provide the necessary means to live their life.
