Wow! I've been following the Deadliest Catch since it came out and when Jake got hired by Sig Hansen he didn't have much experience but I tell you one thing the kid caught on fast. I am very impressed with him when he got caught something he definitely paid attention. That in my book shows hunger. I fished in the North Atlantic for 34 years. When young captains take the bolt for the first time they usually don't last. But Jake is by far one of the best youngsters I've ever seen in my career. In my early thirties I got my 200 ton captain's license and took a long lighter out twice and I didn't want the responsibilities because they are great. I take my hat off to you Jake you are one of very many youngsters that don't last in here you are kicking ass. Congratulations I hope the very best for you and your crew. May all your dreams come true!

The thing of it is in fishing therefore are instances of, when you mess up you might not have the chance to fess up to making the mistake because it may end up fatal to a crewmember or even the whole crew. Chain was on the drum, the hook snagged a boulder, a beam swell lifted the boat and the winch pulled off the deck and blew out the bow of a 108 ft. MARCO, similar boat to what the Northwestern was originally. Until that hook is free of the bottom you have to follow the cable or chain. Only difference here was the anchor style; Danforth vs Navy/mud. I wasn't there but I saw the results, October 1979 Akutan, AK.

And Jake shouldn’t have to tell the guys 10 times not to stand in front of it. The lack of communication would piss me off as a Captain.

Nobody could hear a word Jake was screaming. Worse yet, nobody knew to be the Captain's eyes up there. Before "phones and Internet" we'd sit around and listen to others lessons learned (With Terminator 2 playing on a VHS loop in the background, of course). Nor did we have a production crew aboard in our Captain's face.
Not good! Jake needs to get that anchor back on the drum or he will lose it at the bottom of the ocean and will have to fish it out. Last time this happened he was the deck boss on the Mighty Northwestern and he and Edger had to fish out the anchor. Jake grabbed Edger's legs as they hooked the cable to the anchor and by the end of the day and after some fighting they got their anchor on the drum where it belongs.
No, the crew are just amateurs to stand Infront of the chain, or just drugged up Muppets. Hand signal is enough to lift an anchor on a small ship like this
I have a question to anyone who has ate crab before: What does crab taste like does it taste like chicken or like shrimp? I’m asking cuz I’ve never had crab before and trust me we don’t have stuff like that around Ohio so but I heard it’s good but never had a crab before
Fished the four main species in Alaska for 15 years and ate a ton of the stuff. It tastes like crab. Each species is a bit different.Dungeness are my personal favorite as they are a bit sweeter. As for buying any fresh crab now, good luck and open your wallet wide, real wide.
Crab legs are amazing. Tender, sweet, juicy, kind of chewy, and a little bit stringy. More flavor and more texture than shrimp. You crack the shell at each joint and if you've done it right, the shell slides off in one piece, leaving the meat. Dip it in melted butter or cocktail sauce and enjoy!
