- The 1983 Redskins were an incredible football team, whose one main fault was that they peaked juuuust a little too soon. The Redskins played as close to a perfect game as possible on this cold January day, putting the visiting Rams on ice, 51-7, at frigid and frenzied RFK Stadium in this 1983 NFC Divisional Playoff Game.
Joe Theismann earned a well-deserved fourth quarter ovation, throwing for 300 yards and two touchdowns (both to Art Monk), while "Downtown" Charlie Brown, John Riggins (with The Hogs!) and rookie sensation Darrell Green all had standout days. Led by nice guy John Robinson, the Rams featured class-act Eric Dickerson and our old favorite Henry Ellard on a day they'd probably rather forget.
With Pat Summerall and John Madden on the call, the good times - and the Redskins - rolled in this classic early 80's playoff gem.

What a team that was! I'd give anything to have an o-line that talented on our present team. And this organization, if you can call it that, should still be doing more to honor Darrell Green. How incredible was he in this game? ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Here's a fun fact for you and I know we don't know each other, but my uncle knew Darrell Green personally. When my uncle worked construction down in Virginia during the eighties, he worked on Darrell's house. He also attended Redskins games and sat right next to his wife. Pretty funny considering the fact my uncle is a Giants fan, but he said those were great times and moments he was happy to be a part of.
I've been watching football a long time and to me Darrell Green isn't just one of the best corners to ever play, but one of the best football players period.
Ahhhh yes when Football was Football Hail To The Redskins baby🎉🎉🎉🎉💪💪💪👊👊
This was the first playoff game my dad took me to. I was 15 years old at the time and what a great day it was.
What a lucky kid you were!
@@RetroSkinscan you find the entire game of 11/6/83, STL vs WAS. Week 10 ???
Here’s a short clip of the last score, but I want the entire drive if not the entire game. I’ve been looking for years.

I’ve often said and I will say it again, there are a few more beautiful sites in all of sports history than watching John Riggins lower his shoulder to deliver a hit on a DB rather than go quietly out of bounds.
amen, brother
Pat summeralls voice is tailor made for NFL broadcasting
Absolutely 💥
Just watching Darrell Green in his rookie year, all the way until his retirement year was special.... No Redskins player other than John Riggins was big in the playoffs then those 2 guys
Just an absolute beatdown from start to finish.
Hail to the REDSKINS
Not the safe spaces (“commanders”).
Ah, the good ol' days....
They were so good for so long. A shame what they’ve become. Been waiting more than 30 years for the glory days to return.
From across the country, I have been a Redskins fan for decades. I loved this game. Thanks. They will always be the Redskins no matter how woke the NFL gets.
Downtown Charlie Brown!!!
That Redskin team was a very special team in 1983 and the way they got annihilated in the Super Bowl the way they did is still unbelievable.
They were smelling themselves that day and got humbled by a lesser team the raiders ,believe you me had they played them the NXT day the redskins would have beat the brakes off of them
The Raiders defense matched up with them perfectly; the key was their front 7 could handle the power running game. Their cornerbacks were both the best in the game at the time. Their ability to stop Riggins was key,.
If they had gave Riggins the ball this much in his 20's he might have been the goat running back.
Imagine having the honor of Pat Summerall and John Madden calling playoff games!? I was only around to hear them call Thanksgiving Day games but man true icons of sports broadcasting!
I am somewhere in that sea of fans. lol. What great memories.
Thanks so much for posting these old games. It's really great fun watching them (again).
What a memory! My 13 year old brain was mesmerized by this team..My opinion the 83 redskins are one of best teams never to win a super bowl.
Yup, right up there with the ‘90 Bills.
I was 13 years old too. I do think this was one of the best teams to never win the Super Bowl. Probably top 5 behind 2007 Patriots, 1990 Bills, and the 1998 Vikings.
@@ChrisC709 did u grow up virginia to?
@@jamiedove430 No. I grew up in Prince George's County, Maryland.
@@ChrisC709 oh that's cool
7:42 Don Warren contains the end, Jacoby kicks out and removes the safety from the play but the key to this play is Art Monks block on Leroy Irvin. This is why Art Monk was the best WR in the era I watched football. Sure he was a great pass receiver, not the best at any one task but great at every aspect of the game including blocking.
At that time he certainly was the best at his position the world over. He was eclipsed by Rice but to be fair, so is every receiver who ever played the game. Monk is easily among the 10 best in my book though. Like you said, he excelled in every aspect of split end.
I remember this game like it was yesterday. Growing up in SoCal and I couldn't stand the Rams, this game was awesome to watch. I became a Skins fan in '79 when I was 9 years old, just in time for the glory days. The Hogs, Smurfs, Fun Bunch, Pearl Harbor Crew, Riggo, that '83 team was so dominant all season long until Super Bowl XVIII. I would put this team against any super bowl champion in NFL history. HTTR!!
The 91 Redskins were even better.
Classic 🏈🏟game 💪🤛👊🤜👍
Yeah this was their most dominant performance i ever saw
Hail, to the Redskins!
Hail, Victory!
Braves, on the Warpath!
Fight! For old D.C!
Run or pass and score we want a lot more!
Beat ’em swamp ’em touchdown let the points soar!
Fight on, fight on, till you have won
Sons of Wash-ing-ton, RAH! RAH! RAH!
Hail, to the Redskins!
Hail, Victory!
Braves, on the Warpath!
Fight! For old D.C!
Hail!!!!!
(Sad to think that anyone who roots for the safe spaces a.k.a. “commanders” thinks of them as the continuity of the glorious Redskins even though they don’t have the fight song intact. That song is as fundamental to that team as wetness is to water. But such is delusion).
@@MaximusWolfeblah blah blah.
Many thanks, boss. Hail!!!
I really miss these days.
All true Redskins fans do. All fake Redskins fans show out, spend money/time and feign enthusiasm for that rotting carcass called the “commanders.” Hail to the REDSKINS!!!!! Gone but never forgotten.
Those were the days! 😢
I remember watching this game as a 4th grader and the more I remember the more pissed I am that they got blown by the Raiders. Still one of the more stunning beatings as a fan of all my Dmv teams (maybe with the exception of Gtown losing to Nova in the the NCAA finals)
I was in 4th grade for this game too. Although I missed the first quarter because my mother and grandmother prioritized something else in my life on this day, Had to have been a Saturday game because Sunday would have had Church preventing mom and grandma making my weekend plans for me.. Women have wacky priorities.
Yes I'm a fan since Larry brown who is still my favorite running back besides gale sayers.
I thought no one would stop them
Mannnnnn my redskins were the shit 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉PERIOD!
THAT ( '83 Redskins)was the best team to not win the SB. The 2007 Patriots were almost too good to be true until about December(they peaked until then when starting to not cover spreads even tho they still finished 16-0). These Redskins would've made Brady a spectator for 2/3 of the game had they been able to square off.
I am sure most Commanders fans enjoyed watching this game and miss those days even more now.
When Daniel Snyder finally sells the team it will be like winning the SB for the Commanders fans.
There are no Commanders fans here.
I love these games that come down to the final play. This was such a nail biter. I thought it would go into overtime. Somehow Washington pulled out the victory in the final moments....
The Fun Bunch
One helluva awesome ass display of dominance this game could have been 70 - 0 REDSKINSNATION FIR LIFE!!!!!!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Darryl Green starts trotting at the 40 yrd line. He knows nobody in the NFL can catch him.
And this was the juggernaut Rams team the Cowboys couldn't beat on their home field, a 9-7 juggernaut
This old footage proves how much more people were alive back then. I mean look at this shit. These people are off the hook! There's so much energy between everyone there. Nowadays people are boring by comparison.
When the skins blew the 21, point lead against the 49ers in the NFC championship game they lost a little confidence they beat the raiders in the regular season by , only 1 point I was worried going into the super bowl I did not think they would get blown out but I thought the raiders could beat them by the way the skins lost only 2games this year each game by only 1 point great season anyway
This is how much I discount the new England Patriots Dynasty.
This Washington Redskins team would destroy any iteration of the best New England team you can find. This includes the undefeated team that ultimately lost to the Giants.
Football was just different then.
But Lawrence Taylor and Bill Belichick schemes with Taylor has likely kept Joe Jacoby out of being a first ballot Hall of Famer. That goes to show us how infinitely great LT was because in my opinion, Joe Jacoby, drafted, is one of the greatest lineman to ever played the game.
Brian Mitchell in my opinion is a Hall of Famer as well. Grossly underrated.
7:43
The LA Rams of the 80s were cursed by better teams in the NFC. Redskins, 49ers, Giants and Bears.
Cursed by inept QBs too.
Everything the Rams did right the previous week at Dallas, they did wrong at RFK.
They were playing a far superior team. I think that aided in their demise.
i will always call them the redskins
The 83 super bowl was the most disappointing super bowl. everyone was expected a heavyweight fight between the Raiders and the Redskins and it was a blow out.
“C-words”. Good one.
