Playing Thunder force 3 right now on the genesis mini. It takes awhile but I eventually got to the 4the level with continues. It is brutal though at least for me and I haven’t been able to finish the game as a straight play through without saving. You do get better the more you play and it seems like it gets a little easier the more you play and it’s fun so I guess there’s that at least lol. That final boss gonna take me awhile. Those moving blocks are crazy.
It does seem like an arcade game made for eating quarters 😂

It's a good gateway into scrolling shooters. Maybe not the best one, but one of the better

The funny thing is, TF3 came out for the Genesis first and got an graphically improved arcade port a year or so later. Like you said, they thought it would be a well suited game for munching quarters, so they ramped up the difficulty again...

My first Thunder force game was part 3 in 1990. I just purchased the genesis and borrowed TF3 from a friend… mind blown. To this day TF3 is a GOAT.

TF3 is the best imo, better than its successor imo. The often quite heavy slowdown in TF4 is distracting and not helpfull at all. They should've focused on performance and smoothness, instead of way too much effects on screen, more than the console can handle.

watched this video to find out i've actually unlocked the "good ending" without even knowing there was a bad one, lol
r-type WAS my first experience (not actually - river raid), it was though but i always had a soft spot for the series. it also has one of my greatest pet peeves in shooting games (shared by gradius) which is as soon as you die, you get a fade-out and a restart from somewhere back on the stage. oh my god does this ruin the flow of the game. thunder force doesn't do that, and this already makes it waaay better in my opinion. it just adds to its perfect pacing, specially in thunder force 5. the rhythm and pacing of that game are incredible, and it also has the best soundtrack. i kinda like the lore in this entry, but never really bore to read this damn bible (even forgot this was a thing) but i appreciate just "kinda knowing" the story, i don't know, the mystery makes it charming (something illusion of gaia shares, of all games). i'm not sure if i'm being clear, though, lol anyway i'll take the humanity vs. ai instead of this overdone evil space empire thing any day.
thunder force 6 was...weird and sad, to sum it up.
i remember visiting tecnosoft's website around 2000-something and there was this notice about they closing up and all. it's ok if we just get this re-releases though, i'd buy thunder force 5 (again) from day one.

I would choose a version with more features and smoother gameplay either.

Bro, that scream in thunder force 1 is not a person bro, its a battle droid. Get it right. Roger deserves respect

I never liked the option to change the ships speed, it's just distracting and could easily be avioded through better game design in the first place. Most shooters are already quite hard, so you're busy enough with dodging bullets and choosing the right weapon.

I don't love the implementation of it (mostly because you have to keep pressing the button to cycle) but found it pretty helpful in a couple of the levels. Didn't particularly miss it since though.

Thunderforce 3 on the megadrive is the best by far. Perfect level design, visuals and music make it such an amazing game. Some say 4 is better but I strongly disagree, level design nowhere near as good, too much going on resulting in slowdown and it's too difficult. I don't like Thunderforce 5 at all, those polygon graphics look terrible and gameplay not original at all, stages not memorable. Without a doubt Thunderforce 3 is the greatest side scrolling shmup ever made in my opinion, it's a perfect 10/10

Indeed, TF3 is better. I'm not a big fan of TF4 - it looks amazing for a Genesis game, but like you said, its gameplay is by far not as good as in TF3. And, also agreed, I generally prefer sprite based 2D graphics to polygons, regardless the genre (probably bc I'm "old"😅).

You unlock the Thunder Force 3 ship (along with its weapons) in the Sega Ages release.
I already forgot most of what I say in the video but I think I mention the unlockables both for Thunder Force AC and TF4.
