One thing I used to do to help me sync up audio tracks with video, is when the camera and audio are rolling...look directly into the camera and hold my hands up and do a single, very deliberate clap...that really gives a great audio and visual reference point.
That definitely can help!
Some mixers let you record your mix out onto an SD card that is in the mixer, which negates the need for the audio interface. Some mixers even let you record the main mix AND each individual channel for additional mixing in your DAW later. Fun stuff!!

I can remember reading about how to make good live recordings way back in the 1980s. Back when there were just electronic mixing desks and no computerised recording. The article I read said to use a multitrack recorder with one track for each instrument, one track for the vocals and one track for the crowd noise to make it sound like a proper live concert with the sound of the audiencd crowd.
I remember those days! There was a different art to the process back then! I also need to make an update - most board act as an interface (I found out later this one does) so you do not need an external interface. One less piece of gear!
Also, many boards do not sync to your DAW tracks so you're just going to get the mix you have on stage, which is usually fine for these types of shows. Some of the more expensive boards will allow you to create a track in your DAW for each track (I've been looking at one of the PreSonus Live boards).

Glad this helped! And you can actually eliminate one step - most modern soundboards can be connected directly to your laptop so no interface is required (I learned this shortly after making this video)

I'm glad this helps! It's a little more setup involved. At some point I'd like to get one of the Presonus Live soundboard which you can record onboard
Another way to get clean audio from live recordings is to use a video camera that has XLR inputs. The Zoom Q8 and Q8n are just a few hundred dollars and have 2 XLR inputs. I have an old (from 2010) Canon XF100 that I use for the live videos you see on my channel. This simplifies things for me because I don't need to set up a computer or audio interface at the gig and has the added benefit of already having the audio and video synced. You can still shoot other angles with your phone(s) to add to the video when you edit because - I agree - newer phones shoot perfectly acceptable video. I also agree that it helps tremendously to have videos of yourself playing with clean audio - whatever way you capture it.

I play at similar kind of venues in India and record my gigs using Zoom Q2n-4k and it brings somewhat better audio as compared to mobiles but I wanted to record from the mixer directly and found this video quite helpful. I will get my audio interface and hopefully try this out soon. Thanks !!
Awesome! And actually, you don't need to bring an audio interface if you have a soundboard that has USB connectivity. I learned this after making this video! The Mackie ProFXv10 (and most newer, modern soundboard) have that connection. So you can just connect your laptop to your board, bring up your DAW and make sure that your input/output source is your soundboard in your DAW.
@Jason Stallworth thanks for the tip.. Might save lot of money.. I don't have my own soundboard.. Will check the setup at the venue if it has USB connectivity. It's a digital mixer so It might have one. I don't remember exact model nd brand
Great video.
One thing I like to do is record a beep sound to sync the audio file with the video file after cutting the HD cam audio.
That makes it easy to line everything up.
I started with Sony Vegas for my video years ago as a cheaper solution to more expensive software.
A company called Magix bought out that video software from Sony.
Magix Movie Studio is the beginner to pro software.
I do recommend getting into pro tools or another professional software that recording studios actually use if you're serious about producing audio and video content.

That can definitely help! For audio, I'll more than likely always stick with Presonus and I'd like to ultimately get the Presonus Live board to record onboard with no additional setup. I'm sort of undecided on movie editing but Final Cut Pro would be the most simple move as it's similar to iMovie. I've tried Davinci Resolve but got lost!
One little tip is (for logic) make sure your frame rate on your daw is set to the right value to sync up with video. I used to record video on iPhone which is 60fps, but record audio on logic, and I think the frame rate was not right. As a result the video and audio wouldn’t sync up and would “drift” over long periods like 10mins or longer. It’s kind of counterintuitive to think that audio has a concept of frames per second but that’s what it does!
Oh man, I notice that too sometimes! So what I'll do is make a little cut in the video after about a minute and move that up. And it makes it a little easier as I will have different camera angles and also usually just show shorter parts of songs. But I'm glad you brought that up!
Another great option is to use a Zoom Q4N … it captures great audio if placed well

Nope, I haven't. You would need a soundboard that allows for that. I believe the Presonus Live makes those (as well as other brands)

is there any free apps when im at a concert i wont get buzzing or distortion as the last concert i was at to record a littl video on my phone it was buzzy and distorted , tia.
What do you think just using 2 condenser mics at the right positions where the sound combines?
You could do that but you'd need to really do some testing first to make sure your sound is good if you plan to use it for promotions or anything. That being the case, it might be easier to just have someone record with their cell phone...my wife takes a lot of my videos and I'm always surprised how good it sounds with no special mics
Great video but I got lost hooking up the interface to the sound board. Is it out of the board into the interface? Then out of the interface to where. Sorry I am confused.

Im going to a concert next month to watch a band.. will my lavalier mic work perfectly to record their music? Will my distance from them affects the sound quality?
A lavalier mic will pick everything is super close proximity and not ideal for concerts. Probably best just to use your smart phone for that

If you're recording direct, that's going to cut out most of the crowd noise
@@jasonstallworth it's not direct. The thing is I've got a clip from a concert which is recorded by a phone. But I want those clear vocals to use them for my purpose 🥺.
Would you need a sound board if you’re just recording live performance at him in studio ?
I always use my own soundboard for gigs, even if they have their own system (in this case) and will run my board through one of their channels. I'm just used to my board and settings so it makes it easier

Probably the delay I was using..had a bit much and didn't realize until later
