@@Ethan.s.. It's definitely NOT safe, but that part of your head isn't where most concussions come from. That's the thickest and hardest bone in your skull, and one of the thickest in your body. (Paritiel, Frontal; the bones that comprise the top and front portion of your skull) Concussions typically come when you are hit in the face (eyes, mouth, jaw, chin) or the back of the head.

It blows my mind how these athletes perform way better than most of us. Their disabilities are not holding them back in acheiving wonders. Much respect and admiration.

What makes the Paralympics so interesting is the creativity. A man with one leg and no arms somehow makes swimming backstroke work, and work well. They each have different techniques to work around their disabilities and it’s amazing.

It’s very Interesting how each person has a unique disability, and they all have a different technique that works around their disability to make them as fast as possible in the water. Amazing athletes both mentally and physically

It makes it very hard to even compare them because in a stroke like backstroke I would think arms are more important than legs ( the arm stroke gives you more momentum). So the ones with no arms or only one arm have more to overcome than having no legs, I would think?

Paralympics are cooler than non-Paralympics because each person has their own method of mobility. Much more diverse so to speak a lot of creative thinking in how the events are modified or implemented. And of course extraordinary athletes.

Well the Paralympics first need to get their business in order. I know it makes you feel good to admire them and compare them to olympic athletes and sometimes people even think they are beter athletes. But the hard truth is that the Paralympics is for rich countries and rich people.
I quote;
"To put that into perspective, in Beijing 51% of the athletes came from just nine of the countries, and we had 146 countries competing. Clearly we need the smaller countries to start producing athletes who are good enough to compete."
Also since equipment is so expensive only rich people can afford them. That why (I believe botswana) only had one wheelchair in their team, the rest were blind/bad sighted. So no equipment needed. Meanwhile poorer countries have bad healthcare so more handicapped people so beter athletes, but no money to compete.
So you dont get the best athletes, you get the ones with the best equipment, best handicap (like blind and a good athlete).
So like I said, no hate to their achievements and willpower but the paralympics first need to get a bit more grown up before they are ready to be a global phenomenon.

As a competitive swimmer I find this so inspiring and talented that they never give up even when it may seem like the world is against them and just how amazing they become and how talented they are

@Gunnar Nelson the first place finished in 43 seconds. So I'd say the 4th place finished in about 46. That's a 50m pool. So he swam just over a meter per second. As far as I know thats faster than the average swimmer. But if you could beat him I wouldn't surprized, but stop comparing yourself to a man with one leg.

@@Borrelaas no she respects him because he is a very fast swimmer even though he is missing 3 limbs, which is very impressive
I swam competitively for 8 years, and one of the hardest drills we had to do was tread water for 15 minutes straight without using our arms while consistently using flutter kick and another 15 minutes using dolphin kick (kick used in the butterfly stroke). It was ridiculously intensive. These guys are doing it because it's the only way that they can swim; the amount of stamina that it takes for these guys to do what you just saw is hard to put into words, but next time you're in a pool, try and keep your head above consistently while doing the drill I mentioned above: you'll quickly realized that unlike people like Michael Phelps who is blessed with the perfect body for swimming (along with his talent and practice), every single person in that pool works literally a minimum of twice as hard to compensate for the lack of bodily functions.
True, it is arguably more physically difficult, and has an added mental difficulty. People with their limbs and great health already suffer mentally in life… imagine the stress of being without your limbs, yet still fighting through it and training… moments like these give me such strength. If they can do it, I can too. There is no excuse to be sorry for myself, I can always push myself to do better, regardless of what my circumstances are 💕

Makes you realize how blessed we are, how much we take for granted and how hard disabled ppl work to just live...let alone athletically compete. I realize it with my nephew that has cp without speeech and he doesnt walk or use his hands for much...he inspires me all the time

This is my first time seeing this and this is absolutely amazing much respect to these men who strive to be the best in their league and not only that but have overcome the odds in their personal life and persevered to have the strength and courage to put their most diligent efforts into something they're passionate about and trying to achieve greatness but either way showing all the rest of us that we can do most of the things that we put our mind to

Huge respect to all the participants in this Men's 50m Swimming task (Paralympic) , all have given just amazing performances....hard to believe even. But J.Reyes deserves to be 2nd runner up, he was just close to LIU Yuntao.
A. Petracek no doubt 1st, L.Yuntao 2nd and J.Reyes 3rd. Hats off to their courage and abilities to prove them up for life and inspire others.

Actually, less body mass means that the oxygen in your body is more concentrated. These guys probably have even better stamina than some of the best Olympians.
It's actually not as bad as you might think (relative to swimming in general). For the people with full motion in their arms, it's roughly the same intensity as normal swimming. For the guys with just one or two legs, that is just dolphin kicking. Underwater it's actually one of the most efficient methods of racing swimming (hence why you're not allowed to do it very long), but once you get above water it is an absolutely killer ab workout.

I love watching the Paralympic Games. It is just amazing how people with so different body types can compete and reach good results even compared to people without disability by training hard and developing their own technique.

This really is amazing. I always thought the Paralympics were by nature unfair, as the health issues these athletes have can have a huge range, and it's entirely possible that some athletes have straightup better chances of winning because their condition isn't as debilitating in their given sport. The biggest component of the regular Olympics is that all the athletes are a full human, and just by looking at them, you would think they're all equal. But this is something else! Unmatched respect to all these incredible athletes!

Unfair? It doesn’t matter. Competing is why you do it.
They're all classed. A race usually has athletes in all different classes in it but the winner is not necessarily who finished first in their race but whomever finishes in a time closest or fastest to the world record in their own class. This is to ensure complete fairness

i’ve never watched the paralympic games… i really ought to now. this was absolutely fascinating. much respect. as a mexican american, i’m stunned to see the representation here!! i root for usa when i can but i love seeing mexican athletes in any discipline. every single one of these athletes is amazing, and i love seeing each of their unique techniques working with their disabilities.

This is why the Paralympics are underrated and why I like them more than the Olympics. It's a shame these athletes get so little attention from the media
Sure it's nice to watch the best of the best compete in the Olympics, but they don't face tough physical disadvantages that are like a hurdle on a track. These athletes do. Yet even with those disabilities, they still prove they can achieve so much. They turn that negative into a positive and embrace who they are. And I say this as someone with autism and a hip disability. I spent pre-school in a wheelchair in a children's hospital because of that hip disability, and nobody thought I would one day be able to run...yet through physical therapy, I eventually proved them wrong. Effort pays off...set goals for yourself, and push to make those goals a reality. Because if THEY can be successful, so can you

my little brother is a quadriplegic and the pool is one of the places they started his rehab
Actually it can be easier for some of them to float since they have less weight compared to lung capacity, but I amazing how effectively they swim despite being disabled
@Ev Is Exactly. Just because it's more difficult for them doesn't mean it's impossible for them. I'm sure most of these athletes were also told by people (a lot of times doctors) that they wouldn't even be able to perform the simplest tasks like walking, going to the bathroom, bathing themselves, maybe even breathing on their own. The best advice my family received was a couple days after my brothers accident, I reached out to a friend of mine that also suffered from a spinal chord injury and he told me to "make sure we don't listen when a doctor or anyone tells my brother something is impossible for him." At that point if a doctor had something negative to say, we asked them to tell us in the hall instead of in front of my brother. Even though the doctors told us that he would never be able to even move his triceps again let alone walk, we knew nothing was impossible for him with the right training, mindset, and support. Obviously if a swimmer doesn't have his arms, legs or both, they can't swim the same way as someone with them. Instead they find new way of doing it and train to be the best that way.
@Ev Is Another great example is Patrick Rummerfield. My brother has gotten to know him pretty well and he's truly an amazing human. It really doesn't matter if your an athlete competing at the Paralympics, the first spinal cord injury quadriplegic in history to recover full physical mobility (Rummerfield), or someone that hasn't regained much mobility after their injury, the amount of hard work these people put in physically and mentally in order to live their best life (even if it's not how they imagined it) is truly amazing
a lot of us, without having dissabilities at all, still complain for every little thing, even material, while these guys have the mental strength to overcome those dissabilities and win something for themselves. truly inspiring.
That's what annoys me about this generation, alot of us act so depressed about things that can be resolved with some effort meanwhile these guys who are missing limbs are able to go further than us

These athletes deserve so much more acknowledgment. The fact that they have overcome different physical difficulties to compete at this level..... Inspiring on a whole different level.
They didn’t get here because they beat out people without disabilities….they all have to overcome physical difficulties.

@Sketchylazers Actually my point was that with disabilities/different abilities, they had to learn new ways of doing things. Regardless of how the competition was designed, just learning how to swim when you're differently abled is entirely different and a more complex skill to learn than if you're born with all abilities and arms and legs, etc.

Me too! Watching the families/ countries cheering in the stand, so proud, and seeing the determination and strength in these athletes despite their physical limitations is just so inspiring! Very emotional!

I dont want to make fun of these people because i guarantee theyre a lot tougher than me but theyre not even built??? It just seems like anyone with sufficient disability can qualify where as regular athletes have dedicated their whole lives or at least a good chunk of it to their sport

I never ever seen this or watched it, I have heard about it, but never watched. I saw the thumbnail and it seemed interesting I wanted to see how. They are better in the water then me. I couldn’t do that. Wow I will support this more amazing.

My grandpa told me once when I was 6 years old, that there is only one kind of handicap, the one in the mind. I never forgot that word, and it really changed forever how I judge people and look at them. My grandpa taught me always how to think different and appreciate what I have. I remembered all of this while watching this video. These brave men achieved what people with 4 limbs couldn't do in their youth ages.

The thought of being in water that I can't touch the bottom of without any arms to tread water with terrifies me. Amazing that they can swim like that.
Brings tears to my eyes. How incredible each of them are! This is proof it’s so much mental prep for anything. You can be blessed with a whole body, but if you do not have the mental stamina, and heart you can’t succeed. God bless them all!
